I started playing Sea of Thieves about 4 months ago. I put off playing it for a long time because I had other games that I play with friends, and I play on PC. However, I have a friend who got me into the game because he wanted to play something with me; he plays on Xbox One. So, I purchased Xbox Live Game Pass for PC and gave it a try.
I instantly fell in love.
In it's current form, Sea of Thieves is an incredibly well-developed video game, even if it lacked content and got mixed reviews upon release. When I first played I could not put it down for hours and every little thing that I found I could do was another amazing discovery. I began to tear the game and apart and get a huge head-start on my grind to becoming a Pirate Legend. I was having a blast shooting cannons at enemy players, lighting kegs, doing forts, playing Shanty's with friends, and developed a bad habit of hoarding treasure.
The more and more I cashed in loot, the more and more I wanted to buy everything in sight and see everything the game has to offer.
My disdain for the game started when I discovered Ancient Coins as a purchasable in-game currency. This trope, or trend, or whatever you would call it, automatically makes me lose interest and generally put down games that contain it, immediately. It is not something that should be present in video games. In Sea of Thieves' case, it was handled quite maliciously; pets, which are one of the coolest features of the game, are unattainable unless you spend real life money to get a percentage of coins that may be enough to buy what you want, but will always leave you with a leftover sum of useless funds that you can do nothing with.
Eventually, I got over the Pirate Emporium and accepted it for what it is; it started to make me dislike the game a tad, but it still wasn't enough for me to put it down altogether.
Then I discovered all the Time-Limited and Exclusive content, and my disdain grew... exponentially.
No matter where I looked online, all the cool stuff that any devoted player would want seemed to be trapped behind timed events that had already passed, or trapped behind codes to redeem that are now either non-existent or only purchasable on scalping websites for alarming prices.
Certain things I can understand, or rather, tolerate. The Golden Banana sails being one of them. I won't complain because that content came with a monetary reward and was held a week after release. One of two small events I can put up with.
Most other content, which is some of the coolest looking content in the game, is just unfair. Here are some Time-Limited examples of content that is no longer attainable.
I won't mention any more hulls, because there are a lot and it would take to much time and I am typing this in haste before I have real-life things to attend to. But there are much more notable pieces of content that fall into this same category.
Above is link to a page on eBay where someone is scalping the Founder's Pack Content for almost $1000. This is a prime example of the consequences behind exclusive content, and developers need to take action against this kind of thing, as it does nothing but serve as a jealous reminder of something that player can never get. Now, if I want it, I have to buy it from some random on eBay who knows they can flip it for a profit? That is hands-down horrible content design. Anyone with half a brain does not feed that system of pre-order incentives and bonuses. It is destroyed the video gaming industry as a whole and it is a trope that needs to stop immediately. I post comments on the Facebook page about this, and I will not stop. Example: Day One Eye-patch. Pre-order a half finished game? No thanks. Okay then, well, you're going to miss out on some cool cosmetic stuff that has no effect on the actual game-play that has yet to be developed anyway! (It makes my head spin. Rare is so much better than this.)There are even sails you can only get if you purchase Sea of Thieves Roleplaying game, which is another $60 - $100 depending on where you get it. Insane. Depressing and disappointing.
Let's not forget the Sea Dog Set. Another pre-order incentive. Only, it gets worse. Want to find the Blunderbuss? Go spend around $200 on a hard drive for one piece of content.
And as a final example, there is even content stuck inside a custom controller, which is incredibly hard to find now, that is an upwards of another couple hundred dollars. It is the only way to get the Ferryman Clothing Set.
I do not even want to calculate the amount of money I would have to spend to complete my content collection on Sea of Thieves. I did not ask to be a video game completionist, but it is who am I am. If any developers are reading this, I want you to know that I will not ever stop complaining about this, not because I want to troll, but because I love this game. It's content deserved far, far better and I consider uninstalling every time I have to see these things.
Consider bringing back these items in some form (of course, the Banana Sails are the exception) or I will continue my campaign against the content myself. I do this, again, not to be a troll, or to spam, or what have you, but rather, out of love. I cannot be the only person who thinks this way, as I have seen other threads and posts about it.
Thank you for you time here, and I encourage responses if this gets posted.
- Sincerely,
a pirate who fell in love with the Sea of Thieves.
