Dragon's Call (New World Event Idea)...

  • So, right now we only have two world events (three if you want to count the Kraken since he can only spawn when there isn't a world event active, but that's a very big if). Anyways, the two world events we do have are both just skeleton base. One is fighting a fleet of skeleton ships, the other is attacking a skeleton fort. Both which are fun, but both are heavily very skeleton focus and don't offer any unique challenges... Fighting skeletons is generally normal thing to do in this game even if you don't attend these events.

So, the idea of this event is to add something a bit new that can only be truly accessed and played through this event... Which is a dragon fight, pirate style. I know, some people are probably gonna point out that dragons aren't a pirate mythos or something like that but you would be forgetting something... Dragons are a general mythos. Pretty much every ancient culture has their own dragon myth and even in pirate legends, dragons are still mentioned or use in names and what not. So, it's very possible for a dragon to exist in a pirate base world, and in Sea of Thieves... We have a great area of the map for where the dragon's island will be (and where this event will occur)...

Obviously, the volcanic area on the East side. Which honestly, I don't see any reason to really go there right now unless it is for a Tale, due to it technically being more dangerous there (due to volcanos) while the overall loot is the same. So, this idea will also give us a reason to visit there sometime...

Anyways, onto the idea itself. So there will be a new island or an old one repurpose for this. The island itself will have a pretty big volcano in the back side of it, which should be facing the Red Sea. The front end of the island will be built more like an ancient ruin structure of some sort and the general idea that is happening here is that a mythical call has went out throughout the Sea of Thieves, calling all pirates to this location (basically just like the red clouds we have for the other two events).

The event will have two stages and a "calm" moment in between. The first stage is obviously the island itself which will be overrun by skeletons and some ships around it (it did call all pirates, doesn't have to be living). Players will be fighting each other and the skeletons to get into the vault inside of the volcano. This vault will only open is the team's crew is the only crew on the island (this counts alliances as one whole crew).

Once the vault is open, you can grab the random loot but there will always be an unique chest that is only gained here, which you can turn in for a lot of gold or open it with a special key... (Key is dropped by the dragon). The moment you leave the island with this chest, the dragon will burst out of the volcano and begin targeting the crew who owns the chest (and only that crew). Which means other crew can attack that crew without worries of the dragon attacking them, but once they pick it up onto their ship... The dragon switches target, and the dragon will still active until the chest is out of reach of the island or it is dead.

Essentially from here, the crew with the chest can run away and get a huge amount of gold for turning the chest in or attempt to slay the dragon for the key drop and get unique cosmetic loot from the chest. The dragon, however, will be an interesting fight. Obviously, there will be fire attacks and the dragon could at times try to swoop down to pick up a player or attack the ship with claws directly, and if you're using a Galleon... It could land on the ship somewhere, putting a huge amount of weight onto it until it takes enough damage... Ya know, some crazy new stuff that's gonna be a bit more difficult to deal with, but that's the idea here... To make a truly insane event that is unique from anything else in the game.

I don't want to go into much details about damage numbers themselves though, since that is heavy balance talk and I don't want to touch on that. So, veteran players can fill that in as they wish. I also know that using your cannons against the dragon is gonna be difficult unless it is program to fly low enough, but combat with it is gonna be more like fighting a Megalodon, except it's an air target... Not in the water. Meaning, be best to shoot at it with your cannons if it is flying around the ship or charging onto the sides and something like that.

And that's about it. Open a vault, get away or fight a dragon, and win. Obviously, Dragonslayer title should be a reward for killing the dragon X number of times, and so on... So, ye'h...

Um... What you guys think? This is just me sharing a silly little idea that's not "Can we name our ships!?!?" or other general stuff that I think most of us agree would be nice to have... But rather an idea to add something completely new! Wew! Would like to hear thoughts?

  • I personally don't care for dragons in SoT, and I think that you're also overestimating Rare's short-term capabilities, as well as the game engine's memory limitations.

Besides, I would rather have a giant molten crab.

  • maybe stick with the themes of the sea i'd rather have them add the midgard serpent as it is norse mythology like the kraken is

  • @galactic-geek

Yeah, the ashen crab is a good idea.

  • I dont have a problems with dragons the more the better but i would to see other creatures first like the highly anticipated giant crabs or whales and even a spider in dungeons like the one in Sailot Bounty but with a spider boss in the end.
Flying creatures like hostile birds and dragons could be awesome.
And for word events you have forgot the megs :(

  • @faceyourdemon

I had a spider suggestion once, it had taken over a skeleton ship and trapped the skeletons within it, though the ship still sailed as skeleton ships do. It's a close-quarters boss battle with it having an opening between the bottom and top decks near the bow that it can go through to cut you off. That's only if you disturb the webs (or whatever is in them) or get to close to it, though.

  • @ultmateragnarok Hold on correct me if ive got it properly you have suggested a spider with skeletons in it or a skeleon ship with spiders in it? XD

  • @faceyourdemon

A skeleton ship taken over by a giant spider, specifically. I suppose you could try to make a skeletal spider, though given how spiders are I don't think it'd look how most would assume it would look. Or it'd be a mess of bones like that skull with four hands on some island in the Devil's Roar, but bigger.

  • Really loving all of the ideas btw. I was just offering my own idea that could work, instead of something a bit more obvious like sea serpents, whales, and giant crabs... Still, all ideas are good. Am very happy with this discussion.
