This is now the second time I have played that this happened to me. I will be sailing the sea, no ships around, and all of a sudden, the boat explodes and sinks. Most recently, I was with a crew of 2 others, we were on our way to a island, and in the middle of the ocean, the ship randomly explodes and both my crew mates die, and I got blown off the ship. And we sink in less than 10 seconds. Has this been happening to anyone else? It is incredibly frustrating.
Boat Randomly Explodes?
@drummerzone there are gunpowder barrels mixed in with the supply barrels floating in the sea, ya could have hit them not knowing.
@drummerzone Yeah, this just happened to me so I came here to see if anyone else had the same experience.
I was going solo sloop in open water, no one nearby, no encounters with anyone beforehand, when all of the sudden my ship SUPER explodes. Like, not your average gunpowder barrel explosion either, but a massive detonation that killed me instantly while I was all the way back at the helm, sending me to the ship of the damned post-haste.
I have a reasonably fast PC with an SSD, so after waiting for the door to open on the ship of the damned I am usually able to load back in fast enough to at least have a chance to save my ship. Not this time. I got back in just in time to see the bottom of my sloop drop beneath the surface of the sea, and suddenly there were 3 sharks all over me in the water. I killed one, but fell to the others. So I decided to call it a day after that, because it was apparent to me that this server wanted me dead for some reason, and I don't need that kind of negativity in my life.
Note: I acknowledge the possibility that I hit some floating barrels, but I had my eyes on the water directly in front of me and saw zero birds when it happened. Also, there was literally nothing in the water when I spawned back, except for my busted ship and a handful of sharks.
@wolfmanbush That's my best explanation for it as well, but I was looking dead ahead at the water in front of me and didn't see anything leading up to it. I've run into barrels before, but this one took me completely off-guard.
Alas, the sea be a cruel mistress.

We all miss things from time to time so you may have just missed it but also there are those times where the loot starts sinking and the birds start disappearing which would create less visible birds and slowly sinking kegs that were still high enough for you to hit with the bottom of the ship. Barrels sink fast but kegs sink slow like loot so it's a possibility.

that sounds scary but I know what it is it's a black powder barrel in the water that makes your ship explode
I literally just had the same thing happen right now. Except that I wasn't out at sea. Myself and another crew member had just gotten back onto our ship that was anchored at at outpost and all of a sudden, a super explosion. The gunpower barrels at the top of our crows next were still in tact after the ship sunk. There is no explanation.
There were no enemy ships nearby either... we had a third crew member res the other and I had to go get the ship back to the outpost. We had a storage crate with about half our supplies but that was hundreds of cannon balls lost.

Someone probably snuck over in a rowboat with kegs in it and dropped one on your ship and blew it up. Or maybe they swam over and dropped one of the kegs from your crows nest on to the deck.
