Health bar for bosses

  • would be cool if boss fights like briggsy, graymarrow and the gold hoarder had health bars. its a classic boss fight trope. bosses always have health bars. but for some reason they dont in sea of thieves, so throughout the fights we are left wondering how far through we are, and if our shots are registering, if its healed or if it just has that much health lol

  • I have to disagree. One of the most fun things for me about Sea of Thieves is the "realism" we face.

  • The minimal UI is a big attraction for many players.

Stupid health bars are not appreciated.

  • @d4m0r3d does anyone, except yourself, have a health bar ingame? No...so why add it to the skeleton lords?

  • @d4m0r3d i remember this came up once when the tall tales dropped originally. im halfway there with you. gears of war added health bars and it didnt take away from the game at all in my opinion and especially in terms of bosses it gives you that peace of mind that youre actually hurting it haha.

i bet the devs would say no cause it kills immersion and that may be debatable BUT i think there is a solution which i gave in the past. the skelly lord can either take on a new physical look like his arm falls off or he gets some kinda battle damage on his body OR and much easier i bet to program, they can just add specific voice lines like at half health the skelly lord says BAAHH TO THINK THIS HUMAN COULD HURT ME. at 25% left health he can say YOUVE PROVEN A DANGEROUS FOE BUT YOU HAVENT WON YET. stuff like that.

  • lol

    That's ridiculous.

    Barrels 2.0 is bad enough.
So-N-So Joined/Left the crew is bad enough.

    |No more stuff to break immersion.

  • @revanjstone Came here to suggest the same. No healthbar, but subtle changes to physical appearance and vocalization as you suggested.

Other options would be movement changes or different movesets. This could be as simple as them slowing down, or becming more aggressive with certain abilities.

Currently all we have is that they will cronch on some bananas which only helps a little bit.

  • I agree it would be nice yet I see the immersion factor. All the suggestions of changes in how the act, look or sound is a nice idea.

  • @targasbr the realism? i dont know what you mean, you mean that we dont know what their health is makes it realistic? idk normally you can tell when someone is messed up, by body language, speach. with a skelly i would assume we would see broken limbs, messed up rib cages. if not a health bar, i want them to atleast give us something to indicate how messed up they are.

  • @schwammlgott no but for everyone else in the game, you can count shots. for example i know a human has 100 health, so i shoot them twice knowing the second shot will kill them. with a skelly lord, i aint got a clue how much health they got, and counting the shots would be impossible, especially because they will probs heal at least once without you seeing.

  • @dislex-fx @Schwammlgott honestly dont understand this whole immersion argument, some of you have even mentioned our own ui while talking about how seeing another piece of ui would break emmersion. i just dont see that to be the case. like others have said. realisticly when someone is dying there is normally body language/ speach that gives it away. they arent just going as strong as they have always been to suddely arrrrghh you got mee. idk, what breaks immersion for me during the boss fights is, wth when is he gonna die, i wonder how far through it we are, are all our shots registering, is he bugged? are we actually dealing damage?

  • I'm not for it or against it, but like the ship banner, island banner, healthbar, etc. Couldnt they just be a toggle item?

  • @captain-coel you can turn off the hud in settings, and yes i believe you can toggle it on a bind

  • @d4m0r3d you say this like I don't know such stuff...I didn't say anything about immersion, just, why should they add a health bar, when nothing else in the game has one? I don't care if they'll do, but also I don't see any need for it

  • @schwammlgott

i described the needs for it, re read the post. i think you mean a different word, otherwise it would be that you just dont want it in the game. like i said everything else in the game does have a health bar, we just cant see it, but we can estimate it. cant estimate a bosses health bar very well. but i know 2 shots to kill a player, 2 shots to kill a skelly, 2 shots to kill a pig, 2 shots to kill a chicken. i dont know how many shots to kill a boss though. i know how many tenticles to kill on the kraken, and i know just about how many shots it will take to kill a meg. but i have no idea how many shots it takes to kill a boss. the difference between bosses and everything else is we dont have any idea when a boss is gonna die, but we do when everything else is. bosses are new to the game. why would they add health bars to chickens, or to skellies. that argument is irrelevant, the argument that nothing else has a health bar doesnt matter. cause why would we need a health bar for anything else.

but like others have said, i would be ok with just physical indicators that they are coming close to death, or speach indications

  • @d4m0r3d I mean almost nothing on the screen.

  • I’m for showing damage on the character model and more aggressive combat or fleeing mechanics.

As far as what breaks immersion?

•Little kids squeaking and singing in a pirate game.

•21 and under kids getting everything in the world handed to them from mom and dad who keep opening their mouth. Saying the dumbest trash talk thinking the silver spoon that they sit on makes them the best. That right there breaks immersion for me. This isn’t CoD stop acting like it is. I’m all for people talking to each other and making deals or trades or forming alliances. We don’t need to talk or sound like pirates but that stuff detracts from the visuals or the world that Rare made.

•Giant billboard sized Name Plates above pirates heads has annoyed me from day 1.

•Firing ourselves out of cannons. That’s always been annoying. What’s the point of getting the ship close for battle when everyone just flies through the air. 🙄

I’m sure there’s more that breaks immersion but I can’t think of anymore right now.

  • I agree that these bullet sponge enemies can be a little frustrating when you've no idea how far you've progressed in the fight but I'd prefer more cosmetic tells on the character than an actual HUD element. Audio cues (like with Megs) could help too but I'd worry about accessibility if they were the only tell. Maybe an aura like the Ashen Guardians/Key Masters have that changes as their health goes down?

At the core of it though, I'd just prefer more variety in the fights. Maybe phases in fights could also help when judging progress - and not just them eating bananas.

  • Theres nothing wrong with a health bar if its implemented properly. The lower health they have the more "damaged" they can look, if by color rendering or animation.

  • @d4m0r3d i personally dont feel for a health bar, however i can see the reasoning behind having a way to tell its damage level.

Someone before me already said the same but what would be smart is that for stuf that has alot of health (meggie, skellie lords and some skellie captains even) that their physical appearnce would change. This would be in style with the games minimalistic UI and still convey the requested information:

    Fi:

    • meg gets more and more slashes on its body

    • skellie lords/captains get their clothes more and more thorns or get cracks in their bones

  • @realstyli yea well like others have said, the skellies could show more cracks in their boanes, or even walk limped or something like that in order to show they have low health

  • @callmebackdraft yea i would be happy with a system like this if they didnt add health bars, either one is just as good to me, although looking damaged is definately cooler

  • @joe-krakatoa Don't you think it would be a great idea if there was a setting so you could just turn it off if you wanted?
