Jim is even more sketchy than Duke, it seems. He doesn't want to tell you that you could get more from him by selling the items separately! Never trust a pirate.
In all seriousness, this seems like an oversight on Rare's part. It really should warn you before selling an opened chest with items inside, or else count each item.

Well he is running a black market to sell those chests on to others with keys so he can then buy the tomes back!
@luciansanchez82 Yes just like the warning when you are about to sell a crate from a mission to the wrong outpost or not to be able to sell it with items inside if it got opened at all.
@realstyli Never liked that weasel in the first place, he kicked his crew mate from a bridge and poisoned the others, what a coward!
I want to snap his neck i dont understand why anyone trusts him and let him be part of the bilge rat, its a red flag for me about the bilge rats they are nasty.It was stated in The insider that this was happening and no one batted an eye so I took it as a given function and I informed my crew accordingly when we started playing. . Like @Sshteeve said we opened the chest and removed all items before selling and as others has stated that you can turn in a chest without even unlocking it. Maybe there should be more of a prompt to the selling of a chest I don't know. I guess since I knew what was happening I was ready for it.
@inboundbomb Just came back yesterday from a month vacation in Japan so i couldnt be part of the insiders and some players arent part of it and it cant be obvious.

If ive opened it and i can sell it then it makes sense to count them all or not let you sell the chest if you have something in it, it was a poor design thats it.I agree with you. It should just sell them all at once. But I probably would have sold them separately because that's what I'm used to.
You can put things inside the box that you can't sell to Jim, what did people expect to happen to these ? Ended up on the floor ? It makes sense that you only get the money for the chest, that's what he's buying.
A pop-up on your screen while another pirate is close by to steal it from you or kill you while you read or try to discard the pop-up ? Nah, I'd rather not.
You make this mistake only once ;).

Don’t send a bug report! Right now, you can sell empty Ashen chest and get 10 doubloons. If you report this then Rare will remove the ability to sell empty chests. Just live and learn and don’t make the same mistake twice
@lem0n-curry i was talking only about things he would buy like the tomes not other things.
It was not an idea i dont care not to see it im not a big fan of it too but its either it will count the tomes and doubloons items if the ashen chest got unlocked or not to let you sell the chest of you have items inside when its unlocked.
Atleast a warning message like when you are selling a crate to the wrong outpost.@coffeelight5545 hahaha thanks but im pretty sure i want make that mistake again but others for the first time will and they did it in purpose that you can sell them just never thought about this outcome i think.
@d3adst1ck I was talking about the chest when it got unlocked if its still locked it makes sense that you wont get the full amount because jim still need to get a key.
@faceyourdemon when you did this that was update day there is some bugs that get done after but if it wasn't then it was a bug
@closinghare208 i see,i just hope it wont happned to others like the bugs in the past that some of the tall tales didnt counted and other missions.
