Sword Lunge Glitch

  • Hey all,

Myself and a couple friends installed the other day and were having a ton of fun until we encountered other real players, it was super weird because they were essentially jumping stupid large distances to get onto our boat (distances that don't make any sense) , they'd leap on drop our anchor, respawn on their boat (which obviously got closer while we were raising anchor) and then leaped on again.

Anyways, it was extremely frustrating to all of us since this exploit completely removed the purpose of being on a ship and having a ship battle. So i'm just trying to figure out when exactly this exploit is going to be addressed/removed from the game? We'd like to reinstall, but seeing people leap stupid distances from boat to boat or through the water is just a bit too silly for any of us to have any desire to play the game.

    Thanks,

  • It's not going to be removed. It's officially promoted to feature status.

  • Sword lunge / jump has always been a thing.

It's not really a exploit, and really easy to pull off.

  • @d3adst1ck yikes.. That's unfortunate. I think each of us were ready to sink a lot of time into the game. Welp thanks for the heads up I guess, i'll avoid the game going forward and warn those interested.

  • @everyboat seems like a small thing to get upset about enough to quit a game over.

  • @troubled-cells I guess i'm looking at it with the perspective of "This person leaped a massive distance and caught up to my boat moving directly with the wind, dropped our anchor, died and re-spawned then did it again within a minute.

  • Remember you can use that feature in your own benefit...

If someone tries to board you, cover the ladders :D

  • @d3adst1ck eh, we just had the wrong idea of the game I think. We thought it'd be very boat intensive and reliant on naval battles, not leaping across water like a skipping stone lol.

  • @guilleont unfortunately we're done with the game (seeing that others have already mentioned the jump isn't being removed for whatever reason), that was a little much and not something any of us are interested in doing, we were looking for naval battles rather than jumping battles :/

We were expecting something different, but if the game is successful with this type of gameplay then I won't hang around and keep complaining, it's just not something for me or my friends unfortunately.

  • @everyboat it's not a naval simulator. The art style should make this clear, but you also have the ability to fire yourself out of a cannon.

The sword lunge has limited range, you can see them doing it, and there are only 2 access points onto any ship. It's pretty easy to defend against.

If you're looking for naval battles, might want to try Blackwake.

  • @everyboat ... I guess ok...

  • @d3adst1ck we actually assumed it would be pretty similar to a naval simulator/pirate adventure type of game, obviously we were wrong and that's fine, it's just not the game for us.

  • @everyboat you want a boat intensive game with clunky combat got get atlas

  • @d3adst1ck i'll checkout Blakewake, thanks for the suggestion!

Fair comment, although realistic player movement and combat isn't where realistic properties are focused in this game. Even though ship and water properties are.

Theres a game on steam, Blackwater I think , that sounds like it would be more your thing.

Edit - the game is called blackwake

  • @fast-bike94 i'll check it out, thanks!

  • @everyboat

Yeah, SoT is very much on the fantasy side of the pirate genre and is much more arcadey than a sim. Perfect for me, but if yer looking for more tactical realism... yeah, this ain't the game.

Still, I'd recommend giving it a chance. Do you and your friends make up a full crew? Maybe try teaming up with some veterans and seeing what it has to offer. Nothing is going to be for everyone, but since ya got it installed already, couldn't hurt to give it a fair shake.

    Cheers! =)

  • @everyboat also another thing if you gave sea of thieves a longer chance I can see you already coming back to the forums because of being spawn killed. Or outpost camped

  • @fast-bike94 funny enough that also happened in the encounter I mentioned above. The same group that lunge jumped over to us just sat on our boat for about 5 minutes constantly killing us as we spawned in (granted I wasn't 100% sure how to scuttle my ship at the time), but they were bming and spawn killing when we only had 2 skulls on our ship lol

  • @troubled-cells blackwake looks like a fun weekend game, I don't think it's as expansive as SoT, but can definitely scratch the itch we're looking for (Similar to Guns of Icarus if you ever played that when it was alive). It'll be a solid pickup next time it goes on sale I think.

  • @everyboat so because one feature is currently posing problems for you, something that is easily done yourself AND easily countered you are going to warn people and not play anymore ?

Just so you know, hold block, hold sward attack to charge and when it starts lunging push jump.

Its been in since release because in pre release testing it entered as a bug but became a feature since everyone liked it and wanted it to stay.

The spawn killing can be done for more then just loot:

1 making sure your ship actually sinks
2 transporting supplies (food, cannonballs and planks) to their own ship

  • "I just started playing a cool game and have no idea what I'm doing, but I'm upset because someone beat me so I'm going to rant on the forums about how stupid it is and threaten to tell people not to play."

  • @everyboat You should hold on for Ubisoft’s Skull and Bones (trailers look pretty much exactly what you’re after).

SoT is, and likely always will be, a fantastical pirate adventure game, rather than one with any true realism. That may not be for you, and that’s fine, but still, I would advise revisiting it every once in a while. It may just surprise you :)

Also I'm done with the game, but I will create a post in the forums... sword lunge?? Oh my godness, this game is broken.

  • Exploit implies an unintended function. Sword lung is a little physics gimmick, it's not a glitch or a bug.

  • Love how inviting some of the community is :?

They are a group of new players, noticed something that feels out of place and came to express their frustration about it. No need to be sarcastic, or so defensive over it. The OP is miles better than most of the new player complaint posts we see.

As for the OP, it sounds like you had a specific type of game in mind, but I encourage you all to try it again. Aside from a few quirks, it is a great game that I and my wife enjoy playing daily. Met loads of new friends as well.

Should warn you about a couple of those quirks though, lol. There are people to like to use animation canceling to quickly fire dual firearms for quick kills, as well as cancelling out the sword lunge delay for rapid continuous lunges. Good news is that Rare is aware of these and have tried a couple of different approaches to removing the exploit with the double guns.

    Don't be ridiculous

  • Can you really argue sword lung hopping is a glitch? It looks completely natural to me and is basically just accelerating your character while lifting off granting you a boost jump. Great for sliding through water or used in defensive encounters in tight- quarters. It's a bit silly looking I'll admit but to the theme of the game and the style of the combat I think it serves a purpose rather than being just another advantageous "unintended feature", glitch, or a more extreme exploit.

  • Lol. Non-retractable ladders are an even greater detriment for epic drawn out Ship-to-Ship battles.

Fights are won by sword-lunging over, grabbing a ladder and boarding to stop repairs. At least, 90% of them. So don't bother practicing combat sailing skills, naval tactics, and ship manoeuvres. Practice sword lunge if you want to win battles.

  • Hey die hards, he doesn't like the game, get over it lol

  • This is part of the game matey you use your lunge at the apex of pre jump and can jump farther and farther into the water.

  • @everyboat we spawn kill to make sure ships sink and to take all your supplies it's not being toxic it's just good buisiness
