I am a massive fan of the pvp of this game. Sometimes I just start the game up, just to destroy some other crews and steal there loot. The problem is that lately (this week) it takes me hours to find 1 ship that is empty at a outpost.. so maybe it's a idea to show how many ships there are on your server, so I at least now the server isn't empty and searching for a needle in a haystack? It would also work for the pve players, they would know if it is more save or not.
Show how many ships there are on your server.
@soddencoder671 Aye it's hard being a pirate when there is nothing to pirate. Don't think I agree with showing how many ships there are on the server (6 is max)
I don't know how things are since the last patch where they changed the way server merged but in the past we would drop anchor to see if there was still a ship on the server. If we didn't merge we would search the seas. Sucks when there was only one other, made the game feel dead.
I don't agree with the idea.
Part of what makes each session unique is the fact that you have no information about the world you've loaded into when you start.
I think knowing who is on the server with you or even how many players are on the server with you would go against the game design. This information is something we are supposed to gather through observation and organic awareness.
@soddencoder671
This is completely speculation based on my experiences, but I think the number of ships on a server determines reaper chest spawns. I feel if the server only has one or two ships, no reaper chests will spawn. If I see a single beacon, I think there are 3 ships. At that rate, three reaper chests spawning would mean five ships. I've never seen four reaper chests so three may be max, or maybe I've never been on a server with six ships all at once while simultaneously having reaper chests spawn. I mainly just keep an eye out for how many chests I see at once and roughly estimate how many ships must be on the server. This is only useful when you're on the server for extended periods though, watching how often and how many chests appear when they do.@testakleze said in Show how many ships there are on your server.:

No , i don't want to know how many ships there are in the world , because that is part of my experience...Maybe i am alone but that doesn't take long as four famous lines on the screen tells me i'm being put in another world …
Therefore there are mostly always ships to find , and if PvP is the only thing you care for ,then i can say that you have missed a whole lot of what this game truely offers...
And if your question would be granted then i can see another question coming soon after yours . " Dear Rare , could you be so kind to put every ship of the server on my map , please ? This way i need ten minutes to sink a ship ".... So, please don't.

Proof?
Yes, have a look at where I advised this to someone on Reddit, then a Rare dev confirms what I said.
@chronodusk haha i got you.
i just think that if your server is empty, there really isnt much a experience..
You probably love PVE, because my experience when searching for people for 4 hours long and finding 1 empty ship at a outpost, i hate that stuff.
I just want to know how many ships there are, so when i come into a game i know that i can atleast find someone XD.I Also think the argument that this is part of the game design, is completely false. They try to make this game 50/50 pvp and pve wise. When the server is empty, it is 100% PVE, this is not why this game is made. So let me know if there are people on this server, so i can enjoy the PVP and have the choice to do 50/50. If there are no people on the server, there is no choice...
@soddencoder671 would be cool if they made it so the amount of ships in your server was displayed with a cloud, like you look up straight into the sky and see the number 5 written in cloud. i mean i see no negatives to this, all it would do is allow pvp players to have more fun, it would allow the game to help people help the game fill servers
@clumsy-george i have done a lot op PVE, it just starts getting boring fast.
I just want to know numbers, nothing else. if you want to see all ships, go play arena.
I just like to steal loot 'Sea of THIEVES'.
Sorry to say this, but when i read your stuff, you can see PVE written all over your massage.
I give reasons why they should add it, your only argument is 'part of the experience'.
I already talked about this, but i will make it short.
the experience in this game is PVP and PVE. it is a game made to fight and search loot.
If you cant find people because there is no one on your server, you miss out on 50%.
when you know the numbers, you can choose the full experience!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!@soddencoder671 said in Show how many ships there are on your server.:

Thing is, servers hardly stay empty for long if at all, that's what server merges are for.
So, what, a new player can't sit at an outpost and learn the player controls and mechanics before setting sail? An older player can't go on a huge shopping spree at an outpost, for fear of being kicked? Several crews can't go hang out in a tavern, talking about what really happened in a battle one of them just won? A ship with a particularly large haul of treasure can't take 30 minutes to ferry it all onto the beach for videos and pictures, then take the time to sell it? A crew can't drain an outpost of its supplies, then drain it again after a barrel reset? Kicking people solely for being at an outpost won't work.
@ultmateragnarok are you stalking my account and replying to every comment I have lol. Every time I type something your always the first to reply. And only about two of those things seemed plausible. But it definitely is an issue. A lot of the times I’ll pull up to the ship at the outpost and nobody will even be there. A lot of the times I see it at the outpost for at least half an hour before I go to it. They aren’t even doing anything they’re just taking up server space. And then if someone is there, it’s a complete noob. There’s NO reason to be at an outpost that long. You sound ridiculous
I've seen all of those situations I listed happen, and done some myself. I've sometimes been the ship sitting at the outpost, simply because I was waiting for some other people to finish up their own things and join while I let the island restock itself repeatedly. Not allowing people to sit at an outpost for any reason (and I didn't list all of the reasons) isn't a good idea. I'm not entirely sure why there are sometimes empty ships at outposts, though. I've seen it happen, and heard stories about people using similar ships to assist on their voyages with no repercussions, and even finding them in open sea. They might be the result of some glitch where ships don't despawn after the player leaves? They don't often seem to respawn after sinking, either.
As for 'stalking', I'm just quite active on the forums. It seems we both like to comment on similar things.
This has been asked for and it is really a horrible idea.
This doesn't only effect you, this effects a lot of different types of players which will negatively effect the game overall.
First issue - Players would know exactly how safe they are and immediately know when the server is filling up.
Lets say the server has 2 ships. You know for a fact that 1 of the ships is at Devils Roar doing an Athena's. You are on the opposite side of the world doing whatever it is you are doing. You know you are perfectly safe and sound. Even if you see a ship on the horizon you know as long as you run away in ANY other direction, you'll be safe.
Second issue - Players - PvP and PvE alike will use this to their advantage. Only problem is that we want opposite things. PvP players will try to find a populated server while PvE players will try to find an empty server. This will just cause an issue in the overall algorithm for the game as people are continuously leaving and joining. There are server hoppers already for FoTD, this would just make it even worse.
Third issue - That is too much information to have period. You shouldn't know how many ships are on the server because again it makes it very easy to take control of everything. Its too much information.
A lot of players don't realize that even if the server looks dead, more often then not, its got players. A lot of players especially PvE, go to the devils Roar. No one ever goes there. Why? Its annoying as hell! However almost everytime I've gone into the devils roar that has been a ship or 2 in that area.
Sea of Thieves is an actual big enough world. Its hard to find anyone anywhere especially since everyone things of DR as the safe zone so to speak. Again, no reason to be there at all anymore really. You get a ton of loot everywhere in the game so DR's is just an annoying part of the map that no one goes too.....unless its a crew trying to avoid other players.

If they really aren't doing anything, the game will kick them in ~15 min for inactivity. Other than that, they are free to 'take up server space' for as long as they like, wherever they like. That's part of what it means to play an open world game.
@bloodybil well i play this game a ton... And I almost never get a server merch even while sailing around for 4 hours and not seeing anyone..
If one other person is still on that server, it doesn't merch.
so u stuck thinking you will find some people, while there is 1 other person in the entire server running around at a outpost.@xultanis-dragon you really have some good points!
But I can push all those point away with 1 more add to this game.
Make the minimum number of ships higher, to like 3.
you never feel safe.. because there will be a bit more server merch and numbers jump up faster. And at least people in your server?!?!?!?!?!!?!?!?!!
And you're not jumping servers every time.
I don't think it is bad to give the people a little bit more information so that they can actually play the game the way they want to..
If they give numbers, it will be more 50/50.
That's how it's intended so give us a tool to play it that way.
EZ fix tbh@sherpa725 said in Show how many ships there are on your server.:
@bactatankbill yeah and it’s stupid it should be changed
An opinion presented as a fact. YOU think it's stupid. that doesn't mean it is. YOU think it should be changed, that doesn't mean it should.
@sherpa725 Because it is their right to play the game however they wish. That's part of the foundation this game is built on.
Not to mention that if you're in it for PvP, a ship parked at an outpost is an opportunity for exactly that. If you're in it for PvE, then a ship parked at an outpost won't hinder you at all.@soddencoder671 just activate the fort of the damn and wait for the pvp to come to you.
No need to know how many ships. The best part is the server hoppers will come to you too.
@sherpa725 said in Show how many ships there are on your server.:
@bactatankbill why are you defending people taking up server space and doing absolutely nothing at an outpost for 30 minutes
Legendary hideout has a little parkour course. Players waste time there.
Sometimes we meet up with other ships and sail away.
Sometimes we like to practice our techniques and try different weapons. (Some pistols have great sights while others do not.)
What to you may be nothing may be useful for others.Haven't been there in a while, but at Sea Dogs Tavern there was a parkour course. Should sailors not park there and try to complete it over and over again?
Heck, some were at islands for a lengthy period of time shooting themselves out of cannons into a silly chair.TL/DR We do dumb things for our own fun.
@d-jaguar I’m 100% certain the sea dogs tavern is not an outpost and I had no mention of the sea dogs tavern at all
Thought: Have an option at the Tavern to see the general status of the server. Something simple like an option to ask "How has business been recently?"
This could have a series of replies that give a general idea of server population.
1-2 Ships = "Been quite around these parts lately."
2-3 Ships = "We've had pretty steady business recently."
4+ Ships = "Been pretty busy around here these days."
This provides a way to get an idea of server population without getting to know exactly how many crews are out there. If also gives the Tavern an extra purpose that is practical. And for crews who rarely anchor it can be an indicator to do it so they can get merged.
There's a special mode called Arena where there is lots of fighting going on all the time.
But in answer to your question. 6 ships is the maximum on any single server. But seeing as how often players drop "in and out" and how spread out over the map they could be it is unlikely that you will ever see all 5 other ships at any stage of the game.

You probably love PVE, because my experience when searching for people for 4 hours long and finding 1 empty ship at a outpost, i hate that stuff. You got that all wrong my guy, I love PvP, love it tons and I steal from other ships all the time. But it was a game design choice by the developers to keep ship sightings to a certain frequency, and that's what I'm supporting rather than just making this game feel like and MMO.
Awareness and discovery of the world without a UI telling you who is around or how many people there are is a lot better for Sea of Thieves because that's what gives the world the unpredictable feeling.
I just want to know how many ships there are, so when i come into a game i know that i can atleast find someone XD.

If you pay attention to old dev videos, tavern talks, etc, you would know that one of their design choices of the game is to force the player to explore, experiment, and discover without the player being told or guided too much. They prefer for there to be more natural ways to learn about the world instead of just telling you up front.
