SoT on Xbox is horrible

  • To start this off: This is not another Xbox vs. PC thread. There have been enough threads and posts discussing this subject. This thread is for giving feedback on the Xbox version of SoT and making suggestions on how to improve it.

It is no secret that the game has atrocious performance on Xbox. Of all the games I've come across on the platform SoT is the worst performing by far. Initial startup load time can last minutes sometimes and load times ingame are not much better. I wonder what all that loading is for since textures still pop in after finally spawning in the game world.

After finally being ready to play the player is greeted with delightful 30 FPS that just love to dip into the low 20s. Might I add this is on the Xbox One X. Not only does the game have a hard time loading textures but also loading the contents of barrels which is actually hindering gameplay. Talking about hindering gameplay: The game has lags and bugs all around. Want to fall through your ship into the water? No problem! Want to fight other players and have an extra challange by not being able to see them? The game has you covered! Want to die and get stuck in a neverending loadscreen? It truely is an adventure. Of course the described problems are the worst case. It's not always that bad but it should never get that bad in the first place. The games design makes players go on hour long adventures sometimes. Having that adventure ruined by a bug shouldn't be as common as it is.

Compared to other Xbox One titles (even those with much higher graphical fidelity) this game has awful performance. Having a game (with competetive elements!) locked at 30 FPS and not ensuring that it atleast stays at that count is a bit embarrassing. I primarily play SoT on PC, have put quite some hours into it, and I really do have to wonder if the Xbox version is just a build without the bugfixes and performance improvements since the PC version is running very smoothly. What is holding the Xbox version back? Bad optimization? I refuse to believe that it's the fault of the hardware when there are other games that not only look but run better.

What makes these problems so incredibly frustrating is the fact that SoT has strong PvP and competetive elements. Loosing a fight due to the inability to play the game properly is infuriating and sadly a daily reality on Xbox for many players. Especially load times for respawning are a major issue that has to be adressed and that has been brought up time and time again on this forum.

So let's start with suggestions on how to fix this:

Stop forcing 4K and implement graphics settings
Implement a similar system to Monster Hunter World. Have an FPS priority mode which lets you play at a smaller resolution with less detail. I do believe that there is a big section of players that would gladly accept reduced graphical fidelity for better performance.

    Actually fix major problems
Bugs (such as cosmetics changing randomly for players after logging in) have had fixes announced but have not been fixed. It really is a slap in the face of everybody who values this game (especially a game that only has cosmetics as a reward). Please address the load times. They ruin the experience and make the game quite exhausting.

    Crossplay opt-out
It has been announced a long time ago and seems to be the easiest solution. Instead of having to fix the game you can just fix the most unfair part of its PvP gameplay. This has already been discussed in other threads (many of them locked) and is very much wanted by Xbox players. I will mention preemptively that it's very unlikely that this would lead to empty server on the PC side. Even if 100% of Xbox players chose to opt out there are still enough PC players to fill servers.

Honestly, it's sad seeing SoT in the state it is in. Rare, fix your game.

  • Great post, however Im sure Rare will find a reason to close this thread really soon.

  • @belyaevfox great post but as lemon said I'm sure they will lock this post too they don't like feedback unless it praises them.

  • Startup time is slow even on PC. Having a SSD helps but the game is slow to initally load on both PC and Xbox. The bugs you describe occur on PC as well.

As for Crossplay, not to beat the dead horse but we don't know the numbers. I don't play on Xbox but trying to get into Arena is near impossible because there are never people playing it. Meanwhile my friend who plays on Xbox is able to solo queue into Arena without issue.

  • @belyaevfox

All totally honest and genuine feedback.
As a Xbox one X player myself I agree 100% with all you wrote.

  • @nucl3ar13
Arena issues have already been confirmed to have nothing to do with opt-out. There was a post from the Arena dev somewhere talking about Arena issues, Im sure someone could link it here.

    Ahoy maties!

Sorry to disappoint but I see no reason to moderate the thread thus far... Keep the discussions on topic and it should thrive.

  • Three words, err... letters... SSD.

Performance is great for me on the X.

Game initially loads in about 30 seconds or less for me with X and SSD.

I have not come across many problems on PC. Also, I never had problems loading player models, loading barrel contents or any of that sort. To be quite honest I don't really want to compare Xbox to PC in this thread.

I highly doubt that an SSD can fix bugs or even improve FPS.

  • @belyaevfox Not necessarily, but the improvement to load times is a massive difference. Spawning or being mermaided back into the ship takes 3-5 seconds instead of 10-30 or forever. It also helps with pop-in textures too.

  • The solution for the consumer shouldnt be to buy XY, the devs clearly could optimize the game even further and make it a better experience. With the added microtransactions Im sure they will have enough resources to revisit the perfomance and improve it, if they choose to.

However from my own experience, Im sure Rare will continue to ignore it.

  • I do have to agree investing in an SSD was the best thing I ever did for my One X, it has improve spawn times to where I now spawn in faster than most people I play with (and a few are on PC).

You are likely using a better quality and faster RPM drive on that PC. This is the drive used in the XBox Ones:

Its a 5400rpm drive. Notice how the benchmarks are all over the place? It's a wildly inconsistent, cheap drive which does account for some of the performance problems on console.

  • you want an honest opinion???

Until the game is attempting to become an e-sport kind,... none of this matter. (and i used to cry about it too, until i realize the truth)

If SSD improves the game thats great but I as a consumer should not have to invest in hardware in order to make the game a better experience. The HDD experience should be good enough right from the start. Why do most other games not have these issues even though they run on the same HDD as SoT does? It is the fault of the developers if their game can't run properly on hardware that other games can run on just fine.

  • @bumbumbac
It does matter because its not fun if you lose 3h worth of progress/loot because your game started acting up.

Games are supposed to be fun not frustrating.

I don't disagree that this game should run better than it currently does, but I also don't know how it's constructed. As for why other games run better on the same hardware, it's likely because they use the drive less. Can that be done with Sea of Thieves? Only the developers could tell you.

I disagree, it's your fault for not understanding the game you are playing (and my apologies if you are new to the world of computer games, I've spent more than 20years in it)....

SOT is designed to present a perfect picture to the end user (even if the server does not compute the picture as perfect in the reality) which results in you seeing a 'hit' on your target while in the reality it's a 'miss'... this may sometimes confuse the user but I understand how and why RARE & Microsoft are pushing this 'user friendly display of things' instead of 'true display of things'...

... I used to play Quake 3 arena back in 2000 and Unreal Tournament 2k4 in 2004... and those games would display TRUE STATE of the game to you... meaning, if you had 200ms ping you knew that your rocket launcher missile would be delayed by 2seconds, so you would consciously pre-aim with 2 seconds delay in mind when targeting others...

... but SOT tricks you in this regard, it pretends that everything is going well, while in fact you are lagging like hell but that is not shown to you, so you end up baffled and bewildered about what is going on.

This game was created to target casual players who wouldn't know the difference, alas it attracted elitist players like myself who can spot BS from miles away. And that is the current state of the game, don't expect it to change 'cause it would require a whole different kind of coding.

I'm just saying, if you are an elitist who want to push his skills to the limit you're better of finding a different game in that regard, and so am I... my hopes are lost that SOT would ever get to be that kind of top notch, hardcore, pro-gamer kind of game... it won't. And there seems to be no interest to make it so by devs either anyway.

I have experienced all of those on PC too, those issues are not exclusive to Xbox users.
There are a lot of bugs they still need to fix for users of both platforms.

  • This thread is slowly but surely turning into a PC vs Xbox thing again because PC players decided to flood the thread.

@Deckhands please remove the off-topic posts so this thread doesnt get closed. Its important for us console players to have a thread where we can discuss the perfomance of the game without being bombarded by PC players who will derail the thread into PC vs Xbox terretority.

    Thanks.

  • It’s a good 15 minutes between turning my XBOX and entering a game. Like
No joke, I’ll start the XBOX when I get home. Load for like 5-10 minutes.

    Select ship and sever type.

Throw dinner in the microwave and sit down on couch. Game is just entering “Playable” mode when I start to eat.

I’ll Time it tonight just for sheets and giggles. Might be less. Hope it’s not more!

So if I have a 30 year old computer which cannot even handle Simcity4 then it is up to rare to make the game able to be supported by that computer? That is literally what you are asking. if you want to be competitive buy the best you can, if not then don't go complaining to us about it. I cannot take you seriously anymore and I do not know what exactly your logic (or lack thereof) is but Good Luck! Oh and if the load times after dying are a problem then I have a solution for you, git gud and don't die.

I know your not coming at me but I actually considered buying a new XBOX One X or an XBOX One S or even one of these SSD drives. My fear is I’m gonna drop the money and see no difference!

And it’s not my intent I’m getting 150 MBPS 0 Packet loss and all that on WiFi and the PC’s are getting 240 + on the speed checks (plugged in via Ethernet).

Plus I got like the most expensive best reviews Nitehawk router thingy.
