I am by no means a new or inexperienced player but the fishing has me super confused.
I have tried following every guide to the letter on how to catch certain fish types.
From using certain bait in certain locations but I only ever catch splash tails. if anyone can give me any tips or details on how things work that would be great.

@a1strider it says in the description for each type, what bait you need...but that doesn't mean you always catch the right type, there's only a chance to get them...splash tails can always be there...just look closer if it's the right fish before it bites...if not, put the rod away so you don't lose the bait
@a1strider It's much easier to see what's about to bite if you don't 'charge up' your cast too much. Aim to land the lure around 1/3 of the distance of a full charge.
I've also noticed that moving the lure around after they show up (but before they bite) increases the chances that the fish will jump up out of the water. This gives you a perfect view of the fish, and gives you a bit more time to cancel if the fish is another ruby splashtail, etc.Edit also check barrels in every shipwreck you see. There are usually a few fish in them, and a chance for a rare fish as well
@a1strider Just pull the fishing rod back when a small fish circles around it. The big ones are still coming.
