Reapers Chests - The Biggest Mistake!

    I can't help but feel that the introduction of these reapers chests and their doubloon rewards has been the worst mistake so far on this game, and here is why.

    Almost everyone I know on Sea of Thieves is now level 50 in the Sea Dogs company, and very few of them have ever played many games in the Arena, and now have no intention of ever doing so.
    They achieved this by gathering the countless spawning reapers chests and purchased their way to level 50.
    Now it would seem no one is playing the arena, (today's Dev update would suggest otherwise), but that is not the sense we get from posters on the forum having to wait and wait for a match..
    Perhaps Rare saw this happening and quickly limited the amount of letters of commendation you could buy in a certain amount of time, but I think they left it too late.

    And secondly:
    There was a time when any new update dropped and most players would work/play hard to complete as many commendations as possible to earn doubloons to be able to purchase the time/event limited cosmetics, but now there is no incentive to complete any of the new content as doubloons are so in abundance everywhere to the point where they have almost become as pointless as gold has for players who have played for some time.
    And now reapers chests are worth even more doubloons!
    I can't help but feel this was a bad choice.

    Im confused.
    I thought they made it so you had to wait a month to buy a recommendation letter, using doubloons. One letter per month.

    So how is Reaper chests bad? You gaither doubloons and horde them now for buying 1 letter and items from the shops. That all.

    You can only buy one letter a month. I don't think this was specifically in response to the Arena/Sea Dogs but a general response from the Legend players. I would have to go back and look to see specifically, but I don't think it was very long from doubloons increased to letters being cut to one a month. I don't think this is the issue with Arena. My Sea dogs is low due to lack of interest from the rest of my crew and previous wait times in the lobby. I'd rather be sailing than sitting around the Arena lobby so I choose adventure. Want to give the duo sloops a try and see if that's any better but if it's more of the same I will pass.

    @needsmokes The reapers chests were not the problem but the letters were due to not putting limits on them in the beginning. You need those doubloons to pay for these high priced cosmetics which is fine for me.

    Many maxed out their levels before Rare changed it to 1 level per month. This would never have happened if doubloons were still a valuable commodity and a challenge to earn.
    Now lots of players just won't or don't need to play the arena anymore.
    People are always posting on here that the arena is dead. Well, this could well have been a cause for that. Unless your desperate for a few weapon skins, once you hit level 50. There is no need to play it.

    Oh no people not grinding as hard in an empty game. Seriously though it is fine, fact of the matter is most people dont want to the same thing 5-10 times and with most of the updates being time limited that only adds to the sucks because instead of having to do the same thing a bunch over a long time you do it a bunch all at once then burn out and /log till the next update if reapers cheat hadnt been added I dont think anyone on my friends list would even bother checking out the updates because grinding an empty game just isnt that fun

    I've been dropping the Reaper's Chests in the ocean when I've been digging them up lol. Don't need that target on my back when I've got more than enough Ritual Skulls for ol' Dukey to make up for them.

    If it was up to me the Reapers would be worth 500,000 Gold and 500 Doiblons! (Whatever the heck they are called).

    Then We would all want to kill each other and have fun fighting over them.

    90% of us are millionaire with nothing to spend our money on. I just want them for the PVP Fun!

    Personally, I'm just waiting to see what else, if anything, we'll be able to buy with doubloons. I'm closing in on 4,000..

    @needsmokes even before the introduction of reapers chests doubloons where stupidly easy to get, yes they have become even more abundant but at the time of reapers chests release i was at 1072 doubloons even that would be more then enough to buy my way trough 34 levels, i never did mind you but i could have, and that is with buying every single cosmetic that ever became available trough doubloons.

    Now with the reapers chests i am at 3500 doubloons (after just buying al the doubloon cosmetics from dukes black market again)

    Doubloons before reapers chests where as useless as they are now, at least now its easier now for them to introduce high cost cosmetics for them without everyone whining about “but i didnt know and bankrupted myself on levels”.

    Purchased all the new cosmetics again last week and im still sitting on 4.3 million and as stated 3.5k doubloons and nothing to spend them on, i refuse to buy levels never have and never will.

    Any of us who have been playing since Day 1 were swimming in doubloons long before the Reaper's Chests were introduced. (And long before Arena came out.) The Reaper's Chests weren't the problem. The problem was that there was very little to spend all those doubloons on.

    The people that I know who bought up to level 50 in Sea Dogs only did so after they announced that they were going to limit it to 1 per month. Even so, they weren't playing much Arena anyway.

    The problems with Arena are much simpler than people already at level 50 not wanting to play. The main problems are that it just isn't that interesting and matchmaking doesn't work well. If Arena was actually fun and worked smoothly and offered a variety of game types, people would play whether they were level 50 or not.

    @callmebackdraft Dang dude you and I are sitting close. I'm in the same boat. I've never purchased a level and am at 3400 doubloons and 4.4mil gold. I'm only lvl 34 in Sea Dog, still grinding out wins.

    The OP is just mad they didnt buy their levels when they could.

    @captain-coel we indeed are very close, i am just somewhat higher in seadogs, level 47 in there (had to get my 240 wins) however i cant put myself trough that anymore somehow i started to despise arena, even though i am so close to completing it (3 levels and 65 more cannon kills to have 50 and all the comms done)

    I am now just doing adventure and its comms and hunters call (level 48 in that)

    arena is dead cause its not fun...i think arena was the biggest mistake;)

    @callmebackdraft ahh I'm at 75 wins so I've got a bit of road ahead of me. My hunter call is 50 and I've got 4 fish all done.

    I wish they would put expensive Doubloon items in. Maybe awesome ship cosmetics that were 500 to 1000 a piece.

    @NeedSmokes I also miss the days of time-limited events and the value of the Doubloons to buy the time-limited cosmetics. Rare gave you just enough doubloons to either buy all the time-limited cosmetics or, for those that did want to purchase levels, they had to make a tough decision to instead save those hard earned doubloons for leveling.

    The Black Market is a fun-idea as well, but I do miss the time-limited, event cosmetics.
