Emporium Price Revision

  • So ive bought an outfit for my parakeet and the new ship livery set.

It cost a couple thousand ancient coins and i just realised, it cost me like £30 for basically 1 livery set and an outfit.

I’m not complaining in the slightest however as i was happy to pay it but its a little steep I feel.

I feel as though people would spend more if the prices were a bit lower. I know this is true because I fell for this myself from the game Elite Dangerous.

Talking about elite, I must have spend well over £500 on cosmetics but its because they’re cheap. Like £4-6 cheap. Because its cheap ive bought a lot and then checked my bank and was like “wow, thats a lot of stuff i just bought”.

I love the idea of supporting this game and i dont want that to stop but i think the prices or the amount of coins you get for £30 is not ideal and i think you would actually get more people buying if it was a little lower which would mean overall, more support for the game.

I’m in no way a business person and im certainly not a parent but i could imagine a few parents who especially dont play SOT but have kids who do turning their nose up at £30 for a new ship skin. I mean thats a family meal out at wetherspoons!
Lot of kids therefore could be potentially missing out on these cool cosmetics.

Give it some thought is all im asking.

  • I feel srry for all complesionists who have no option but to buy everything xD

  • Aye, it's been a hot topic of discussion since the Emporium launched last month.

Of all the cosmetics though, I'd say the ship cosmetics are the worst in terms of pricing, especially with the "Premium" add ons on top of an already "Premium" cosmetic set.

  • @daringclarky that's your choice, quit moaning

  • I feel good about not spending any money in the Emporium.

I killed an Ancient Skellie and bought the Coin Flip emote.

Nice. I have just been redeeming my Microsoft Reward Points for gift cards and bought two of the 4000 ancient coin bundles :D So far I've only bought the emote packs.

The pricing of the ship sets has always been pointed out as being too high. The only way to change it will be to not buy them and hope they eventually drop the price or put them on sale to try to entice people to spend money. I don't know how well this will work however, since you need to buy Ancient Coins first and then they already have your money.

The number of KI ships I've seen in the game in the last few days tells me that a price drop isn't likely.

a little while back you said you weren't going to buy a pet now you do? and I do like your idea though

  • @closinghare208 Well im not gonna miss out. Ive wasted my money on worse things.

  • Very true. Pretty sure they would sell more ship sets if they were reasonnably priced. I bought ancient coins with the only intent to support the development of this game and hoping it would allow it a long life if they get additional incomes.
But most of the coins I bought are left unspent because of those steep prices. It doesn't feel worth it at all.
They'd definitely sell more ship sets if their prices were revised.
40chf for 1 set is a strong deterrent. Let this game keep on evolving thanks to reasonnable sales please.

    ok

  • I try to judge each game's usage of micro transactions on a case by case basis. Games like Elite Dangerous and Rocket League I do not mind spending real money on because the prices are so cheap. Individual cars in Rocket League range from $1 to $3 mostly, so that isn't bad. Elite changed their money conversion a few months ago but the items are still relatively inexpensive AND only affect the aesthetics of the game, not the mechanics.

Rockstar's use of their shark cards on the other hand, I cannot support. Mainly due to the way that they have altered the game's mechanics to fit their revenue stream. Since shark cards became the focus early on with GTA Online, the cost of vehicles in the game increased and the payouts of the missions and heists dropped. Certain vehicles cannot be owned unless the player buys a string of properties before hand, all requiring either days of intense mission grinding OR buying a shark card. The highest paying shark card which is $100 gives out $8 million in-game. Some vehicles cost $5 million to $10 million in-game. So a player is shelling out around $50 to $100 on average for an in-game vehicle, after spending another $50 for the properties to allow you to own said vehicle. To add insult to injury, certain in-game missions and features can only be unlocked if you own the vehicle. When the game's mechanics are altered to fit the premise of micro transactions, that's when I have an issue.

As for Sea of Thieves, I think the prices in the Emporium are too high, especially for a regularly priced game, as opposed to free-to-play games (not including the Game Pass option to play). Pets are not necessary to play the game, they are just a welcomed addition to the pirate life; although I think all players should have gotten a voyage or mission from Duke to earn at least 1 free pet. As long as Rare doesn't start changing the game to fit the sales from the Emporium I'll just continue playing without spending any money in there. For those who do choose to buy, that's their choice and will receive no judgement or ill words from me.

^^ This is sooooo much my plan if I ever stumble across an Ancient Skeleton or two...

  • I want more and can't get it - I just tried to purchase some ancient coins, and it won't let me because I keep getting an error message saying that I already own that item... 🚩

I've heard of this happening to others, and have already raised a suport ticket (which is pending). To date, I have yet to be able to make a single smooth, hassle-fee purchase from the emporium. This marks #4 and counting... 😒

For those of you who've encountered this issue, how did you resolve it? 🤔

  • @z0rk unfortunately they are a lot rarer than i thought

  • I think my main issue with the Emporium pricing is definitely the cost of the Ship Liveries. I did buy both ship sets admittedly, but that was more because I wanted to support everything Rare has given us with this game.

Now, I do still think the ship sets are far too steep. I feel that $15 or so would be a much fairer price.

Additionally, my other main complaint is that everything in the Emporium has that obnoxious little tacked on amount of 99. So instead of just making things be a nice, rounded number, we have prices like 199 Coins or 999 coins. I believe this should also be changed. It's annoying to have those unusable coins in your inventory because of this, and I'd fully support a change to this, so we aren't stuck with spare coins that can't be used unless you buy more coins.

Otherwise, I feel the prices are fairly reasonable. I've had no other issues with the cost of the pets, or emotes, I just hope they consider changing the tacked on 99, and ship liveries cost.

  • Wanted to buy both ship sets, but I can't justify the price of them to myself, so I passed them up.
Not delivering enough quality content to convince me this game is worth supporting financially.
