Sea Of Thieves cross platform related

  • @cotu42 My preference has always been to try and keep cross play. Even on the few times I lost at PvP and can say without a doubt that the PC-Xbox disparage was the difference. It may have been the difference more often than I realize, but, percentage wise, for all the PvP I have encountered, the percentage of times I feel the outcome was not going to change no matter skill levels, because of the PC-Xbox differences were not very high.

However, thanks to rarely getting a decent conversation about what is realistic and that can be done to try and balance the game I have lately fallen into make cross play optional. Whether it is input or platform based.

But I do feel that although it might be a handicap to some players, the only true way to have balance in cross play, is to have the max speed, and it must be something that is fixed on Rare's side. And if Rare were to implement this, and it works, then there would be no need for separate servers.

Most often you hear replies that KB/M support is coming, or get gud, or other similar comments that take away from actual conversations trying to come up with compromises that might actually improve the game.

Sadly, even if KB/M support came to console today, the fact is the refresh rates for console make it so that you can turn faster, aim faster, but your screen might not refresh fast enough for you to see what you are aiming at or looking at. That is why I think the answer is not KB/M support, but rather a speed limitation for turning and aiming that is binding across all platforms.

  • @nofears-fun One of the main reasons I personally always ask for optional input based.

Is because as this debate has gone on for a very long time now i always tried to think of ways we may be able to address the concerns without having to “Split” the playerbase.

Pc controls, sensitivity etc was a suggestion I used to see a fair bit. In short basically it was suggested we essentially handicap the PC player by restricting there movements and ability to perform certain things to keep them
    more in line with controllers.

I personally was against this because, contrary to popular belief aha I want everyone to have the best possible experience granted to them when playing the game. Or at least the option.

And I just personally didn’t think it would be very fair to essentially ruin the PC players who sensitivity and control scheme just to benefit us Xbox players.
I want everyone to feel like they have a fair chance at the game, I wouldn’t feel comfortable or happy personally if I got the experience I craved at the behest of another player.

    :)

  • @knifelife I can agree with you that it might not be fair. After all, PC players invest way more in their set ups than console players. But, if we truly want open cross platform play, then you need to make that play fair for all. And while I agree input device as an option for servers would be good, I think that takes away from the truly open platform concept. I think limiters for all is good and would balance the game.

Fact is, even with a controller, on my PC, I can have the settings set much higher for sensitivity than I can on my console. Mostly because image refresh rates are higher and I can see what I am turning into when I swing around or aim. The only way to make both fair would be a speed limit.

  • Anyone play beta when xbox had auto aim. It sure helped when fighting PC guys

  • @barnacle-blake Sadly I was not around for the Beta or Alpha or even launch. I started playing a month after launch. Would be great to have aim assist for guns, but not cannons. Cannons I am fine on. It is the hand guns that I seem to always fall short on, lol.

  • @nofears-fun Hmmm you make an interesting thought.. I’m going to have to think about that one and get back to you aha

@Barnacle-Blake I was wondering if we had aim assist or not, I thought we used to but put it down to me imagining it aha

  • @knifelife We had it .....It wasnt a dream ; ) and it was pretty great for sword fighting also. It had a issue with targeting the closest player not always the one ya wanted to shoot at.

I learned to make the one I wanted to shoot be the close one.

but with fighting skellie mobs it would be a pain now, trying to select the one with Gun pow skelli with old auto aim could be ruff. Be great if auto aim only worked vs a real players only.

Cannons didnt auto aim though just the guns/sword play

  • @barnacle-blake
Don't think that was auto aim m8, was just the camera snapping to the nearest enemy. Was taken out as it was a pain in 'crowded' situations.
Pretty certain aim assist has never been a thing & i have been here since near the beginning.

  • @coffeemango9866 said in Sea Of Thieves cross platform related:

@m1sterpunch Nope, not bragging rights just logging on during with a few friends who were semi-new to the game. No, xbox players do not have bad aim, but you can tell the difference between playing with a pc player and playing with an xbox player. Not to say they couldn't have been xbox players, but if you were there you might have understood a tad bit better from where I am coming from.

I don't get it, you was saving up 50+ chest because you were rolling with friends who are newish at the game? Then you believe they were PC players because they had good aim?

Oh it was aim assist. I lived it in beta. You can search aim assist and still see people talking about it 12 months ago in beta see below guy complaining about it:

    Sword knockback and aim assist
After several dozen ship battles and countless sword fights, the only two things that triggered me were the aim assist and ridiculous slingshot effect from getting hit by a sword. The aim assist prevented me from turning effectively to guard an attack. Some of my deaths were caused directly because of the slowdown and even with a maxed out sensitivity the guy trying to dodge and weave like M******d ali won every time cause the assist would slow my attack. Along with that, getting thrown off the ship made me quit more then once. Guy jumps on the ship, battle ensues, you sword him 4 times, then he nicks you once and you go flying off. Way to kill the vibe. I know its a beta, but I sincerely hope that effect gets removed.

    and another:

Try the Xbox accessories app and change the sensitivity/ algorithm? of your thumb sticks. I hate aim assist as it messes your aim up whilst lining someone up over long distances with snipers in most games. When an enemy player runs past the dude you're trying to snipe aim will end up following the dude running. After playing a game like doom or Pubg, this game is a breeze to aim in! I find aim assist makes you lazy. Wolfenstein with aim assist off = amazing controller training Imo.

@sort-out-xplay Did you play beta or Alpha?

  • @cotu42 So you think its perfectly fine for a 70 euro game to be as repeative as it gets after 10-20 hours?

  • @barnacle-blake
Was in alpha & beta, obviously not with this GT. Whether it was aim assist or camera, it was on both pc & xbox & both sides complained as it stuffed up melee combat when mobbed by skellies.

  • @sort-out-xplay The game would snap sight or sword onto target.

Felt like a aim assist to me.

  • @barnacle-blake
yes would snap to nearest target, but not while ADS & hip fire wasn't 100% accurate, so was probably a bit of both i suppose

  • @sort-out-xplay But sword play it was great at times. You wouldnt miss many swings. I did find a old Vid of the Auto aim in action on my you tube when they let us record some vids You can really notice it on second guy I kill

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SjdJQJwyhy4

  • @barnacle-blake The auto aim sword was terrible and made the sword combat worse. It was also way easier to just jump around and jerk the other players screen all over the place (because they were usually also using a sword) and they'd have no idea what was going on. The closer you go to your opponent, the worse you could make it for them.

It also tended to interfere with PvE because you'd constantly get turned in the wrong direction if you were trying to break away from a group of skeletons.

  • @d3adst1ck Ya it needed some tweeks for sure. It had its moments though.
PVE is where it was the worst

  • @barnacle-blake
Yep, was only on melee combat & was an auto lock feature, not auto aim.
This was taken from Launch Release notes 1.0
Removed Auto-Lock on Melee Attacks – We received feedback from our Betas and Scale Tests that this was a clunky experience, so it has now been removed. No more accidental cutlass-killing the pirate crews you’ve made un-easy alliances with!

  • @growlingkittie I pre-ordered the game and paid full price. For me it was worth it, but I can understand if people don't feel the same way.

  • @sort-out-xplay Whats difference from auto lock and auto aim? Isnt locking onto someone with sight just aiming?

  • @barnacle-blake
To a point, yes i suppose it is, but was only in CQC melee

  • @nofears-fun

If you guys really think playing on a pc gives you an advantage you are a negative wit.

The reason you are dying is bc you do not fully understand how to play the game. Not bc pc players have an advantage.

I personally play on both and still suck wether I’m on Xbox or pc. The sniper pistol exploit does need to go, but other than that from my personal experience I do not see any advantage to play on pc from a competitive standpoint.

Now the ability to play at 144fps does give the pc a motion resolution advantage, but that goes for every game bc Microsoft is too dumb to put a good processor in the Xbox.

TLDR/ buy a pc and find out for yourself, chances are if you suck on Xbox you will suck on pc too.

  • @yagerweisster I will ignore the personal insult in my response as I truly want this to remain a topic of discussion. Not allow it to denegrade into the usual toxic stuff that comes along.

Fact is there is a difference. I play on both myself. I am not great at PvP, but I am not bad either. I hold my own. You can clearly see the difference between PC players and Xbox players, based on their movements alone. PC players can see their surroundings better while moving around than Xbox players can, at high speeds.

So yes, I play both platforms. I prefer my Xbox as I can lounge while playing. But I do play both. Usually I play on the PC whenever my kids are over for a visit as they dominate the TV/Console whenever they are there. So yes, I have plenty of experience with both. So please, lets stay on topic and not derail the conversation with negative attacks.

  • @yagerweisster
You've been playing the game for 2yrs on both formats & can't see any advantages?
Yet we are a 'negative wit'?
Type Mouse & Keyboard vs Controller into google - 99% of the sites you visit will tell you KB+M has many advantages over controller & PC has many more over Xbox.
I am better on pc than xbox, i die less & kill more. So how does that work, as i am not a skilled pc player?

  • @nofears-fun

    [Mod edit]

You guys should be directing this whole conversation to Microsoft bc their processor in Xbox is the problem and always will.

We need more cross platform games.

TLDR buy a pc and try on there, I’ll guarantee you will see no difference in your games as far as pvp goes.

You will however be getting a much more enjoyable and immersive experience on pc, but if u suck on Xbox you are not going to magically become god tier bc u are on pc.

  • @yagerweisster It is also not my fault that I bought an xbox to play an xbox game. Simple as that. I also pay a monthly subscription to play, you don't have to on a PC.

Fact is, Sea of Thieves is not a competitive game. Meaning there is no reason you need the high end set up. There are plenty of other games out there for that.

And you should read my post. I have a pc and play the game on pc often enough to see the difference. It is there and very noticeable. You have proven my point, most PC players do is resort to get gud arguments. Very few can admit there is an advantage because they don't want to lose that advantage.

  • @yagerweisster Ahoy matey!

As strongly as you feel against players on the alternative platform please do not post derogatory remarks like that as they do not comply with the forum rules, please remember to stick to these when posting in the future.

    Derogatory Language
Name calling, personal attacks and using derogatory language against Community Members, Rare Employees, Global Moderators or Deckhands is not acceptable. Using such language will result in a warning, then temporary ban from the Forums and a final warning. If the action is persistent or increasingly aggressive, a permanent ban from the Forums will be issued.

  • As usual baiting & trolling, the name calling & derogatory language comes in trying to derail any real discussion!
Swiftly in there to censor it guys ;)

  • @yagerweisster I would also say, I am not against Cross Platform. Not one bit. I state that everywhere. Because PC players in general push back on making limitations on speed so that the game is fair all around, I have simply changed my view point that we should be allowed for OPTIONAL cross platform play or OPTIONAL input based limitations.

I understand, you don't want to be handicapped of any advantages you might have and maybe it would take away from some immersion for you. But would you be happier if they removed cross platform all together because you won't accept limitations? Honestly, I fail to see a reasonable argument against simply setting a max speed for everyone across all platforms and across all set ups. I truly feel it is the only option to make sure that cross platform will work successfully.

I'm not sure you can really complain about baiting and trolling from a new user account created specifically to "discuss" a certain issue.

  • @nofears-fun

I guess I’m the minority then... I’ve been waiting for cross platform to unite friends lists for ages now. Optional would be cool.

But from my experience on both I do not see any competitive advantages other than fps... so, say two pc are playing against each other in SoT pvp.... one players pc struggles to hold 30fps while the other pc player is rocking 144 + fps are you saying the 30fps pc player is at a disadvantage? Bc I would not, I also play with controller on both, so maybe that’s why I’m not seeing this advantage you guys are speaking of. But I guess I do seem to notice turning o n pc might be better but I allocate that to the higher fps and fact that controller sensitivity is max on pc and half on Xbox.

I do not play on pc for any reason other than games are just visually more immersive with 4k 60 native or 1080p 120hz on my 65”.

I usually only have a problem with the sniper/pistol and just assume any other time I die is bc it’s my own fault.

  • @yagerweisster I have an Xbox One X and use and external SSD drive to improve loading times. Even with the faster fps of the one X, I can't use it at full speed sensitivity because nothing renders fast enough. I too prefer the controller and use an elite controller for both Xbox and PC.

I have no problem spending the money, as you can see based on the fact I have the highest end console - upgraded with the highest end equipment, while also having a modestly high end PC. My preference is simply playing on the console for comfort level while playing. There are a few other minor reasons, but it is all comfort based for me.

And while I know a lot of people make the claims that the only reason PC is better is because of KB/M, I notice a dramatic difference mostly because of those refresh rates are so much better on PC. Which is why I think overall, the best and only solution is to limit speed for everyone.

As you said, your sensitivity is higher on PC than console. same with me. And that is because of rendering and fps issues between the two. So honestly, you are agreeing with me while not really seeing it.

  • @nofears-fun

Like I said pc players have all types of different rigs and setups for playing. Some are playing at 30fps some are 60 some are 144 and so on.

So literally only difference I stated was bc of frames, meaning the game has higher motion resolution on pc bc of higher frames than Xbox.

So just look at this high end Xbox you speak of as the low end 30fps pc for a sec....

    Get it???

They can’t limit the game to Xbox specs, if that was the case your one x would would be running just like the Xbox one.

I just don’t understand your logic in slowing it down. There is other factors going on in the game that are meant to compensate for that kind of stuff, if it’s truly broken I’m sure it will be addressed and fixed eventually, but I just think everyone’s over thinking the whole thing.

  • @musicmee

My bad, I thought I was keeping it moderately civil lol.

I’m just pro cross platform and really want to see it become the standard with every game.

I also play on pc and Xbox and do not see this advantage in movement speed you guys speak of.

I see higher frame rates which seem like you spin around faster, but I do not notice movement being better.

Anyway you scurvy bilge rats have a nice day, hope this problem for you is resolved soon.

  • @nofears-fun

    PS.

Sorry if you felt my original post was a personal attack... was trying to be funny lol

    Meant no offense
