Rare should not cater to streamers. If they do, the rest of us deserve a mode to turn off streamers. We all deserve to play in peace. As well as have privacy as we commit our piracy.
Streaming on Twitch is helping Sea of Thieves. I bought the game because I watch Summit1G play it, otherwise I would've not bought it. And several of my friends whom I told to get the game also, were hesitant as well until they also saw either Summit1G, Lirik I believe, or some other of those streamers play the game. From a business standpoint, every new game has a streamer mode in it, and every popular game out there currently has a streamer mode. It's a great strategy by the SoT team to imply it into the game.

... and yet somehow, players can still sneak and hide and be successful.
I'm not trying to be snarky, but is this really a problem?
The visual scope of players is fairly limited in this game, and with the use of emotes, sneaking past, and hiding from them, are pretty easy things to do. Otherwise, we'd rarely hear of people being jacked on their own vessel, or being kegged.
Just as a side note, there are lots of people clamoring for more ways to report cheaters. How would they do so, if they can't see the player name?
I do not know about cheaters, and I haven't encountered any cheaters in the game (and by cheaters I assume you mean hackers).
I consider it really a problem in some instances. Yes, you can hide around the boat and use emotes to hide your name, but when you're attempting to board a crew, a lot of players are not trying to spot you necessarily, they are just looking for your nameplate. Even several of my friends say "oh I don't see any nameplates (therefore, there's no one around, they think)". The nameplates are extremely easy to spot, specially for players with a long name. Heck had I known this, I would've made a name with one letter so it's much harder to see.
It affects the part of game play where it's you against a crew of four, and you try to take them all out by yourself. If the nameplates were gone, they'd have to focus a bit more in trying to find you running around. So yes, my argument is that it could increase the skill cap for players who like to be "ninjas".
And just thought of what you said about cheaters for a bit, they could add something as simple as a kill feed. If you feel those players were cheating, then you could see their name after they've killed you, and report them, that simple.

@rodlimitless sea of ninjas again
That's the best kind of game play. Wait for guys to do those skull islands, the Athenas etc., then come and steal all of their loot. Last night we followed these guys for about 30 min till they finished a skull island, as soon as they finished loading, we trenched them between the rocks, sunk them, and took everything worth 21K gold, it was epic. That's real entertainment and fun right there. Now, I'd like to try just stealing everything without them noticing nor fighting. For that, the nameplate being gone would help :)
