Server Maintenance Thursday 3rd January (TODAY) Until 3pm GMT

    Just a quick heads up...

    The Sea of Thieves servers will go offline for scheduled maintenance in 30 minutes. We expect this to last till 3pm GMT. Time to wrap up your adventures to avoid losing your hard-earned treasure!

  • Is anything being added to the game? Like next update? That is a long time for "server maintenance".

    I guess if we get an update today, it could also means a Dev Update Video is on the horizon 🎉

    No news yet but keep yer eyes on that horizon, I'd imagine Christmas is being packed away on the Outposts ;)

  • I really wish they'd get better at communicating these things. There was no indication an update was coming on the website. Will this update end Shrouded Spoils? Will the Gilded Voyages go away? Will the time-limited cosmetics be removed? These are questions I'm sure many players would've liked to have known prior to the update. If the answers to the above questions are "no" then no harm, no foul. But just to be safe, I logged into my wife's account to grab her Gilded Voyage, since she hadn't picked it up yet. I'm glad I caught it in time, with five minutes to spare. Yikes.

  • Before Athena journeys, 30 minute warning was fine... we had literally JUST put a fresh Athena journey down and the warning pops up. Please in future, give us at least a hour warning. We managed to complete 3 of the 8 at least but it's still frustrating.

    Looking for patch notes atm but haven't seen anything yet - I'm guessing maybe they'll be up roughly around the time of the dev stream, if that's happening today ofc.

  • @genuine-heather It could have been better communicated, but they did mention gilded voyages will be going away at the start of January and that once bought, players can keep hold of them until they choose to use them. https://www.seaofthieves.com/news/gilded-gifts

    Not sure why they don't make a post here on the forums the day before to say they have maintenance planned. Keeps folk better informed and can always been edited if it gets cancelled.

  • @xot3rm1n4t0rox There's usually word of any kind of update before hand. I would guess this is just maintenance to get any tinsel or spilled gravy out of the servers - I doubt there will be patch notes.

    3 GMT is 4pm CET. As for what the maintenance is... nobody knows as to my knowledge it wasn't announced at all before the 30 minute warning we received.

  • I check the status section under support regularly to see when the next maintenance window is coming up, is it just me or has anyone else noticed it doesn't get updated with scheduled maintenance anymore?

In fact, it says no updates are scheduled. This lack of communication—or even worse, miscommunication—is a sure fire way to inflame your customer base.

    Since I was able to grab my wife’s Gilded Voyage for her, it won’t affect us adversely. I’m looking forward to seeing what the update has in store for us. But it’s not hard to imagine some upset customers this morning...

    I concur! They have improved, but Rare's communication has always been lacking. They have a webpage with a wonderful forum which could be put to good use for these things. Or even a splash page in game with the latest news/patch notes would be great!

    And yes, folks are going to miss out and complain because of this. Which is a shame.

  • Anyone remember when Rare said they learned their lesson about communication? Well only a few days into a new year. Maybe not late to put it at the top of their resolutions list.

    Unless there is a rogue employee or someone is rolling dice, these type of things should be known ahead of time, even planned. Besides emergency maintenance there should never be a reason to not communicate an update and server downtime more ahead of time. It is good basic level IT business.

  • I honestly don't understand the hostility I'm seeing here.
    Sure Rare didn't specify the date for this maintenance, but honestly we all know that they do weekly maintenance, usually Wednesday or Thursday.

    A lot of us also know that the Guiled voyages would stop after the holidays so at the start of 2019 there should be a maintenance to remove all the christmas decoractions.

    This is an Online game, I understand compeltely that a lot of you folks haven't played games like this before. People who've played MMORPG's for example are a lot more relaxed on this because they know weekly Maintenance is a thing.

  • @hynieth Yeah, you're right. Tuesday-Thursday I always expect that there might be a maintenance.

    On the other hand though, they should really update the status page more in advance. I also still think they need to put that news page of theirs to good use and make it the single source of truth for all things SoT. Updates, events, giveaways, streams, everything.

    Oh, and if possible get the patch notes out earlier.
