I’ve seen it quite well documented that a. XBox One with an external SSD loads the game in considerably faster but will it improve re-spawn times? Will you travel back from the Ferry of The Damned or from a mermaid any quicker?
XBox One SSD Respawn Times
@xraylexx My wife has noticed a significant improvement in spawn-in times since moving Sea of Thieves to an external SSD on her Xbox One S.
So I've tested this out with friends and this is what I've noticed.
SSD is definitely better on load times when loading into the game from initial start up.
When you die and go to the ferry, the timer starts when you die not when you load into the ferry. I've tested it out where a group of players will die together using a keg and though some of us load faster than others, we all exit the ferry at the exact same time. So it does not help with respawning.
Now what about load times between ferry to ship. The load times are about 2 to 3 seconds difference, but that is the difference with a original xbox one vs the xbox one s. So its there but not a HUGE difference. If you have an xbox one S than your load time is about the same as a PC player.
Going from mermaid to ship is the same across the board.
So the biggest difference you will notice with faster rigs and updated consoles is the speed at which you load into the game from initial start-up. Devs did a good job trying to equalize everything.
Only system that is at a clear disadvantage are the Original Xbox One console owners. They will sometimes load in from the ferry and their characters are loaded on the ship but their game is not, so there will be a 1 to 2 second lag as your character is just standing there on the ship while youre still trying finish loading from black screen. I've heard that it can happen with Xbox One S but I haven't seen it personally from testing.
SSD's are still a good investment overall if you are planning on playing other games.
@xultanis-dragon thanks. I have an Xbox One X and I’m running SoT from a standard external HDD. So the only difference I’m really going to see if the initial load time? Not much in the way of respawn time improvement?
@xraylexx That is correct.
Respawn timer starts when you die so going from dead to going through the ferry's door is the same for everyone regardless of how long it took you to load into the ferry.
The only other difference you'll see is going from ferry to ship but since you have a One X you are fine.
If you are planning on getting a SSD and can do it safely without screwing over any warranties or whatever Id say do it. SSD is a good investment if you are planning on keeping your One X for other games.
Just be warned though SSD die faster than HDD. They've gotten better over the years but still die so much more faster than HDD.

Was thinking of getting an ssd myself, I'm not tech savvy so if anyone can point to what specs I'm supposed to look for when getting one. Much appreciated
The SSD needs to be at least 250Gb to be used for game storage. I'm not sure what the maximum is, but I think you could safely go up to a couple Terabytes. The drive needs to be USB 3.0.
We got a Samsung 860 EVO 250GB 2.5 inch SATA III Internal SSD. They are going for about $52 on Amazon. We installed that in a 2.5inch SATA to USB 3.0 external drive enclosure, which cost about $10. This is a much cheaper option than buying a ready-made external USB SSD, and works exactly the same. You just have to stick the drive in the enclosure.

watching some streamers online when they jump through the ferry of The Damned door they are straight back into the game, I usually get several seconds of black screen. Will a SSD fix this? I’m getting conflicting reports.
I have an Xbox One original. Before using an SSD, the time from entering the door on the ferry to standing on deck was 15-30 seconds. Putting the game on an SSD dropped it to 3-6 seconds. Same goes with using a mermaid, entering/leaving the legend hideout, and loading the game.
@ExtremeMonkey10
Pretty much any USB SSD will work wonders, even the cheapest one used here:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=80QN6OfaMPMThe way death works is interesting, it isn't the time from when you spawn into the ferry, it's from when you die in game, you notice all doors open about same time, even though loading into ferry took much longer.
I will sometime record my NVME drive load time and reupload but may be a while, I'm trying to get max rep again.
