Shrouded Ghost Megalodon is WAY too rare

  • Killed three so far by just playing the game lol. Pretty epic that it showed up right after I killed Karen and a ghost ship xD.

  • I partitially agree with @txcrnr
I had the luck to find the box 3 times so far, but not yet a ghost meg.. I like rare stuff, it gives you the "hunting"-spirit :)

On the other hand, i love to get all the time-limited cosmetics. And in a unattended moment, i spend my left over doubloons on merchant rep (hate merchant voyages). So now im trying as hard as i can to get the doubloons for the cosmetics. But the rarity of the krakens / megs isn't helping ;)

  • Please add more content. Specially for long time players.
Dont forget to make them easy peasy so i can finish them in 30 minutes. Cus if i got it done so quickly i can return to the forum to ask for more content and commendations!

Dont make them to hard or else i will write about it in forum!

    Can we ever be happy?

  • @dekeita They are both 5 for level 2. It stands to reason that the rest are the same.

  • @weakdexx Oh I am very happy with the update! I just think that this commendation needs rebalancing. I like how rare the meg is, but either the commendation needs changed or its rarity does.

  • @txcrnr

    good u like it :)
We shall sea what rare does about it.

  • Remember this is a GAME, not a job.

  • @mr-dragon-raaar Surprise, surprise :)

  • If it's definitely the case that the commendation is 50, no one will ever get it unless there's means of tracking it down that we haven't figured out.

  • We encountered the shrouded ghost yesterday in devils roar in between devil's thrist and magma's tide. He showed up right after we defeated a skeleton galleon and there was no fog around at all.

All in all we had about 50 megadolons encounters (all colours) since the update so far. That would make a 1/50 chance to spawn...
And if the spawning is related to sinking a skeleton ship the chances are about 1/60.

/edit: To answer some related questions: It had the same loot, dmg and hp as the other megadolons.

  • Is it true that i can only be found in fog banks?

  • @tedakin Nope, as i mentioned earlyer there was no fog around at all. The chances are just very small.

  • And the funny thing is that i haven't seen so many completing it either.
And i've been in fogs for hours and hours and haven't found any other than Ancient Terror, Regulars and even Kraken....but yeye they will probably make it more available in week 2-3 or when ARENA is being released. :P

  • @octopus-lime more like 72% haha

  • @ant-heuser-kush been playing 20-30 hr stints and sleeping only 4-5 ... I have legendary theif . and almost maxxed all the other meg variants . still no white meg .. done over a million sailed since sp update it's pretty rare

  • I think what the OP is saying is correct to some degree. Some of us are just luckier than others. I worry about how rare the spawn is whether or not I'll ever actually get to see it.

Example - Diablo 3 Thunder Fury and Shard of Hate. I had been playing the game for over a year since its initial release. Got it pre-order and playing it A LOT, trying out new builds and grinding new gear. I wanted the Thunder Fury and Shard of Hate so badly because I had a build that would have gone so good with it. The thing is, the friend I played with got it like 5 times in that year. After a year or so of playing another friend of mine started playing and after getting his gear sorted out what does he get? BOTH DROPS at the same time. He had only been playing for like 3 weeks. To this day I have STILL not got either weapons.

This is the problem with having something being rare RNG. Its only that its rare there are other algorithms at play. Just like the Box of Wondrous secrets. You all do realize that there are still people who play this game like crazy and still have no ran into that box? Thats the problem.

I'm just afraid I won't ever actually run into this thing because my luck with RNG has never and I mean NEVER been good.

So I agree with the mob. The fact that we need to kill like 10 or even maybe 30 of those to complete the athena commendation means that there are some people who will never completely that commendation.

All the other commendation are controllable to a degree and can be accomplished one step at a time. This one however is completely RNG and its super rare RNG.

  • We found and started a fight with a ghost megalodon last night. Not sure if it was bugged or not but it suddenly disappeared and turned into a shadow one (black with magma cracks, I believe) half way through the fight.

Even worse, when we killed that, the commendation for killing the blue meg popped for me (friends already had that one).

  • @realstyli i have had the same thing happen to me fighting the queen meg. half way through it changed to the regular blue megladon

  • My crew and I have managed to kill 3 of the 5 Megs (Ancient One, Hungering One and the Queen). With these new commendations, we aren't even bothering with finding treasure or other quests, we just go out on a Meg hunting mission (it's almost like playing my own version of Jaws and I'm Quint).

I'm glad the spawns are rare (I have no intention of trying to max out the commendations for each Meg), it just makes the search and kill all that much more sweet. This game has some creepy ambiance but nothing is as creepy as sailing through fog at quarter sail anticipating the emergence of the Shrouded Ghost.

Anyone overly eager to not knock these commendations out really just needs to sit back and relax some. After all, what do you get if you managed to max out the commendations? Just doubloons and titles. Big Whoop!

  • It's not too rare. It's not supposed to be the equivalent of the other Megs. That's why killing it once gets you 10x the amount of doubloons as Stock Meg.

Pirate Legend commendations are supposed to be hard to achieve, rare, and take a long time. That's precisely why they're...wait for it...Legendary.

Commendations, titles and doubloons won't go away for these achievements. The only time sensitive rewards are the ship graphics. There's no time limit nor is there a time standard you're supposed to achieve them in.

Since Ghost Meg will always be in the game, there's always a chance to achieve even 50 kills.

You could literally get a ghost Meg spawn on each of your very next 50 journeys.

Just be more Pirate and enjoy the ride. It's more exciting than the destination.

  • I don't know, I haven't seen it one time.

Does it only spawn when fog is around or when you are in the fog/around the fog; or is that just misinformation?

  • It's good the way it is.

Some things require a lot of patience is guess :D

  • You have better luck finding him in the Devil's Roar so sail around there in the fog and you will find it

  • I am honestly under the impression that the ghost meg is not even out because I havent run across it and neither have the other 40+ Pirate legends I have played with.

We hunted for hours in the fog and on the fringe of the fog and nothing.

Don"t waste your time searching for something that's not going to pop yet.

  • @codokilla Found and defeated (not mine/me) https://www.twitch.tv/videos/342656178?t=5796s

  • lul i got it while reading this 👍

  • @serenity-falcon Yes, you COULD literally get one on your next 50 voyages. You could also win the lottery 50 times in a row. However, this thing has still been yet to be spotted by the majority of players in 3 weeks- If it takes 3 weeks to find one, then you can expect to complete this one in 3 years while the others can all be farmed in a month or so if you try hard enough. But I guess everyone is ignoring the abysmally low odds just for the same reason they do for the lottery and play that anyways!

  • @theunionjames The issue is not the rarity itself but the commendation tied with it. So many people are ignoring that point of the main post. Sure, it may be so rare that it will be extra special when you find one, but... you probably won't for a long time, purely based on statistics. And imagine a commendation asking you to find 50 boxes of secrets. Sounds a bit unreasonable, no?

  • @theunionjames Sure, but this one commendation sticks out like a sore thumb among all of the completable commendations. I have friends who have completed all the new legend commendations (all tier 5s) yet have not seen a single Ghost Megalodon. It is a massive middle finger to commendation hunters.

  • @theunionjames I still disagree. Forcing people to wait for RNG can be annoying or rewarding based on how lucky you get, but some people will just never see that luck. Additionally, I don't know where you got the idea that I want the game to be less fun, please don't put words in my mouth. I just want the commendations to be balanced; as it stands, there are a bunch that are reasonable and completable with enough time, but this one for killing the ghost megs is going to force players to sail around in the open for immense amounts of time and will likely not ever be completed in the course of gameplay for many years to come. Now, before you say "But its a legendary commendation so it should take that long!" this just does not match up with the rarity of these things. The game and its servers will likely be dead before this commendation is completed by any single pirate. If it were something like 1,2,3,4,5 for the commendation to be completed, it would still be difficult, but at least completable in a few years. But people are confirming that the second tier asks for 5 to be killed, the third for 15 I believe? It matches the requirements for the other megalodon commendations.

  • @theunionjames I just think you are underestimating the sheer amount of time it would take to complete the achievement; At the current rate, it is likely that not a single person will ever complete it.

  • @theunionjames Yes, but what about the commendation with it? If it turns out to be so rare that the commendation is statistically impossible to complete in 10 years, would you be OK with that? Just saying it as a hypothetical. You gotta remember that its asking for 50 of these things (maybe 100? Havent seen tier 5 of megalodon comms)

  • @theunionjames Even if it is so hard that nobody ever got it? You are fine with it being that difficult? You don't think that would be a middle finger to completionists?

  • Personally, I don't get any feeling of proud and satisfaction in winning at lottery. Of course everyone is happy when winning lottery. But you have a serious gambling issue if you feel proud about it. I feel proud and rewarded when I work for an objective that I finally reach. And the issue here is that all the commendations so far were working that way. If you work hard and go the extra mile you can reach them, except for that one. Shrouded Ghost is the only one that is entirely about being lucky. Honestly, if it was just an achievement or something I wouldn't care. But the thing that you can't ignore is that commendations in this game is one of the main source of progression for players (at least after Pirate Legends). I would not care if I need to kill 100 generic Meg to get a Shrouded Ghost to spawn... It's not about how long it takes that we are mad, it's about it possibly NEVER spawning for most of us when it's part of one of the main progression system and also making us waste our times trying to find one when there is no mechanic related to its spawn rate. I can swim around Island and I'll eventually find a red mermaid... What should I do to find a Shrouded Ghost? To me it's like a big [mod edit] you to everyone who keep playing this game for the commendations, and there are many of us...

  • Haven't seen it once, though I have a hunch that all the megs spawn rates change depending on the time of day after playing the game at the same time for three days in a row.

Around 1pm (GMT) to 3pm (my sister and) I was attacked by the Ancient Terror sailing between Isle of last words and Ancient Spire Outpost (on our way from north to south). This happened multiple times on all three days.

during the evening around 4pm to 6pm Shadowmaw spawned in the same place as the Anceint Terror above but also as I drew near to Lone Cove. This happened on the second and third days I was playing with the Hungering One and Crested Queen popping up from time to time.

It's a good thing the doubloons are staying around because I doubt many are going to see it by January at this point.
