Annoying Sword Fighting

  • Its slow, its clunky, it doesn't allow for any variance/skill (other than hopping around like a cricket). All of these things lead to the STUPID die 20 times and try again mechanic.

  • I have a useful guide in the guides section of the forums called "How To: Basic & Advanced Combat Techniques" - give it a read and I think you'll find that the combat in SoT is deceptively deeper, more nuanced, and faster than you realize. You can find it here.

  • Been playing for little over a year now...

Still love it. Cutlass is awesome.

  • I know Im not the only one who feels like theyre giving birth every time they sword fight. It lacks lubrication in the same way the interaction with ship controls does. Thats why jumping around like a cricket and dying 20 times are effective strategies.
Give us some lube! It very much feels like a first go at it not a finished thing.

  • cutlass is fine. it takes skill to use it effectively. The only thing I'd like to see updated on it however is the cool down period when you miss. In my opinion, it's to long of a cool down, this needs to be buffed a bit.

  • @mith-bosevem
You probably aren't making use of it's bugs. If you hold the block before doing any action(attacking, charging, lunging, etc.) the sword does not implement the slow. Also, hitting anything with the sword counts as a "hit" for the purpose of the [E10+ rated word] combo mechanic and lunge reset. The lunge reset however will still lock you in place if you hit an object(rather than an enemy), but since it doesn't lock anything other than player movement you can use the sword hop to move around like normal. It's a spaghetti coded mess of a weapon, but Rare doesn't have a lot of integrity when it comes to stuff like this.

  • @siriondb Gotta say. That was some impressive... stab-hop-stab.

More than anything, I wish they'd implement friendly duel mechanics, so we could practice this stuff with our crew.

  • @mith-bosevem You obviously haven't read, or tried, the advice in my guide yet. That's okay though - I'll wait... 😉

    Thank you!

If you wish to practice these things with your crew, I suggest you take on a sloop and you find another crew to give you their ship. That way you can control two ships and practice swordplay.

I also like to Shadowfence a lot. It might sound crazy but I fight my masts and I practice my sidesteps all the time when I'm travelling between islands.

Also, I like to jump from one end of the ship to another. It lets you practice your air control and reaction time. Whenever the ships rocks, you can use that to your advantage to jump longer distances.

Otherwise, you can always practice your lunges with a teammate. You don't need them to take damage to know that you've landed your lunge.

  • I'm sorry but you're just a no idea of how to use a sword properly if saying so, the coutelas fighting, even against guns, is just nervous, fluid, mechanicaly heavy demanding and need you to combine hard inputs to succes and quick decision making at the same time.
The most reason i see you complain is because you have no idea on how to move and slash or slahs and parry at the same time, and reduce delay between animations by little tricks. I personnaly love the fact that swordplay is dubm as hell when you just clik block and when you start to understand and manage the mechanics is becoming beastly, but that's a personnal point.

Just don't be general and incitate others to complain instead of searching the game for mechanics and advanced gameplay. The game is design to let us exploit whatever we feel via the tools they give us, and the only thing that you realy earn that separate a new player for another more experienced one is the Skill and the game sense, as mechanics mastering, espcialy on combat both naval and on foot.

Feel free to contact me if you wanna learn the real fencing of SoT

  • oh by the way i forget a thing, the streamer on the link is far far from mastering SoT fencing, in case you ask

  • @mith-bosevem then equip yourself with a blundy and pistol combo and dont let em get close enough to do that to you.

If they come close, dont even waste time ads-ing, just hip fire the blundy into their bodies then pull out pistol and finish em off if you can be fast enough to do so.

There are ways around each weapon in the game, it just depends on the circumstances of your current situation.

  • Hi @tempestbob-shop.

As this thread is over 11 months old, I will be locking it. If you would like to have a conversation about a similar subject please open a new thread.

    Thanks!
