The Event After Forsaken Shores.

  • Before i do anything, can I just ask about the Forsaken Shores thing. Will we still be able to go to Devil's Roar after the event, or will it become inaccessible after.

Ahoy, I was just thinking. We knew about Hungering Deep on game release, I think we also knew about Cursed sails and Forsaken Shores, although we didn't know much about either of them. Now that Cursed Sails is close to over, can we get some more info on the Dlc after Forsaken Shore, not much, just a title to give us a small inkling of an idea of what's gonna come from the fabled "fourth team" at Rare.
Here are some ideas of what the next event could add to the game.

    The Frozen North
Similar to the Forsaken Shores, the Frozen North will introduce a new area, an icy tundra. New island features include:

    • Deep snow, that slows pirates
    • Extreme cold, which will damage pirates over time.
    • Frozen rivers and lakes, which pirates can walk on and slide around (ice skates?)
    • A new skeleton type found only in the biome. These skeletons are protected by icy armor, allowing them to withstand a tonne of damage. Holding up a lantern slowly melts the ice. When the ice is destroyed or melted, they act like regular skeletons.
    • Ships will require an icebreaker for their hull in order to sail through the icy seas.
    • Limited time ice cosmetics and ship decorations for completing the main story during the event.
      Other Major Features
New Mini Faction: The Company of Cartographers, Scientists and Explorers. The CCSE gives you gold, commendations and titles for basically exploring. Commendations include:
    • Visiting all islands
    • Visiting all skeleton forts
    • Visiting all outposts
    • Visiting every landmass, including unmapped ones (includes title, Explorer of the Realm)
    • Kill 10 skeletons
    • Kill 10 gold skeletons
    • Kill 10 ice skeletons
    • Kill 10 shadow skeletons
    • Kill 10 plant skeletons
    • Kill 50 of all skeleton types (includes title, Skeleton Biologist)
    • Capture one of each kind of animal
    • Capture five of each kind of animal (includes title, Animal Lover)
    • Encounter a kraken (0/3)
    • Encounter a megalodon (0/3)
    • Encounter a giant crab (see later in the post) (0/3)
    • Complete all three commendations - title, Dangerous Adventurer
    • Kill a kraken (0/1)
    • Kill a megalodon (0/1)
    • Kill a giant crab (0/1)
    • Kill each giant monster 3 times (title, Legendary Monster Hunter)
Giant monsters now drop body parts, which can be sold to Merrick (yes, Merrick will come back), for cosmetics (megalodon-teethed swords, crab claw for hook hand, etc)
      Fishing
    • A new npc can now be found in the tavern or on the docks. The first time you meet him, he gives you a permanent fishing rod.
    • Can be used to fish in any biome and area, provided there is water and you are not on a moving ship.
    • Different fish can be caught in different areas.
    • Fish can be eaten to restore health, or sold to the Fisherman
    • The Fisherman can give you quests to catch certain kinds of fish, that are only found in certain areas, eg, Devil's Roar, or underground, or only in frozen rivers. These fish are worth much more gold when sold to complete a quest.
New Random Monster, The Giant Crab
    • Spawns randomly, like the kraken and megalodon
    • Only spawns when pirates are on land. Cannot enter the water
    • Attacks include swinging claws wildly
    • Hard shell protects most of the body against gunfire, but sometimes exposes its soft underbelly before or after an attack.
      New Loot
    • New Cursed Chest, The Chest of Singing Frost. Pirates, Skeletons and Animals are slowed when near the chest. Picking it up increases the slow, and muffles all sounds.
    • New Cursed Chest, The Chest of the Serpent's Bounty. Carrying the chest makes pirates almost completely blind, and they constantly hear a hissing noise.
    • New Cursed Chest, The Dancing Gold. This chest unleashes a wave of music every 5 seconds that forces every nearby pirate or skeleton to dance for a few seconds,
    • New Cursed Chest, The Chest of the Monster's Curse. While this chest is on a ship, it increases the spawn of legendary monsters and they automatically focus the ship when they spawn.

Ok that'll be everything. If anyone else has other ideas and concepts for what could come in the dlc after Forsaken Shores, please comment bellow.

  • @becausescience1 said in The Event After Forsaken Shores.:

I've no insight in Rare's internals by any means, but rest assured, they won't design a whole new region just for 3 weeks of use.

    Another approach, looking back:

    • THD: Quest gone, Meg stayed
    • Skeleton Thrones: Some rewards gone, thrones stayed
    • Gunpowder Skeletons: Some rewards gone, terrorist skellies stayed
    • Sunken Curse: Some rewards gone, statues stayed
    • Cursed Sails: Quest will be gone, skeletons ships are confirmed to stay

    About the rest (just examples):
The Frozen North: Big Sea of Thieves Later Expansion Idea
    Need snow and ice
We need a giant crab boss
    Fishing
    New Treasure Chest Designs
So nothing really new here and at least one of these is rumored to be added to the game … some even say as part of the Forsaken Shores Update. The other things, considering these are constantly brought up on the forums, likely will be added at some point later on. I mean there is certainly a another new biome to be added in the future and a cold region is one of the first things that come to mind.

  • As @Crimsonraziel says, it's unlikely they'll block access after the event. They'll just remove the event part.

I'd love to see fishing and other recreational things to do and goals to achieve in the game. There's a lack of "side-quests" and engaging mini-games. At the moment, barring short term events, all you can do is dig up treasure, shoot skeletons, catch livestock.

Most long-term multiplayer games have some sort of progression to focus on, often outside of the main progression. Looking at games like World of Warcraft that have tackled issues of player retention and player boredom for a long time - they've added all sorts of things to do on the side from fishing (with achievements and rewards) through to fairly in-depth pet battling and all sorts of engaging activities to keep players amused when grinding fatigue sets in.

SoT doesn't have these diversions which means players disengage with the game when they tire of the main grind. This makes it more difficult for them to come back in and you lose a lot of casual players which bulk up a lot of the numbers.

SoT sorely needs content to engage the players and give them things to do. Hunting quests, fishing, racing, pvp arenas, maybe even some crafting or more traditional style quests that aren't just the generic voyages repeated ad nauseum.

More monster types would also be cool. I was hoping there'd be a whole merman faction added, but it seems the best we'll be getting for now are statues. I love the skellies, but variety is the spice of life.

  • @becausescience1 Great ideas here. A lot of what you're suggesting has definitely been talked about here before, but the details you provide definitely help me see how this could be well integrated. I, for one, have been a huge supporter of what I've seen called 'mundane commendations.' Getting titles, etc, for doing just about anything. Your breakdown for this 'CCSE' is great. I've also heard rumors that they may incorporate cooking or some sort of crafting feature, so a faction associated with that as well could be super cool.

  • @becausescience1 give a job to this guy seriously all good idea ... except the ice skeleton imo its the same thing as shadow skeleton but more painfull lol

  • After forsaken shores is not known, but we do know there is an "after" being planned roadmap wise. Nothing SoT introduces disappears, it is released into the world.

    Fishing is coming

    Potions is likely coming

I live in alaska, I don't want to see more snow than I need to lol. However, I am strongly against ice that inhibits players or vessels.

  • Some things I've considered reagarding the longer term content offerings for SoT. Now, I realize this may seem off the wall but consider this. Rare had a roadmap for the game as a smallish offering that was a one shot and done that would have had micro-transactions and the DLC we are still getting likely would have been longer in development and probably paid DLC. Then MS stepped in and put them on Game Pass as a flagship product. Instantly, Rare had to change direction and figure out how to go big or go home as best they could. Content additions were newly remarked upon as Free DLC, the store and other plans were tossed aside in lieu of this new direction, and a whole new roadmap was born.

Well, we're reaching the end up that initial offering. So what's next we ask?

My prediction is that we will see a continuation of weekly events. Elements we've had considered in the past such as the store will start to see light. The original ideas they've had for the game will be expounded upon and offered as potentially Not so Free DLC. Quality of life updates and additions we will likely still receive as loyalty offerings, but the bigger stuff, not so cheap. But we will also be seeing these updates arrive with less frequency as they now have more interest in assuring they are released without the bugs we've become so used to. Can't charge for updates that break the game after all.

Overall, I predict most of the 'new stuff' we will see down the road, will match up with things they've talked about long ago before launch. I feel this will be the response to less immediate need to please MS and advertise gamepass with SoT at the forefront. I don't see Rare going the way of EA and charging for every little thing, they don't come off as that crass, and they are still the lead program on the gamepass service. Overtime this will change and the game will adapt as needed. They're going to want to continue to give us weeklies and so on in an effort to keep the 'game as a service' flavor alive. But we will see a fracturing of the community once they start charging for expansions as not everyone will buy into it. Since congruent community play is the heart of the game the paid DLC... will likely remain less common, but better developed than we've seen. To include as mentioned whole new areas of the world which are easy to keep unpaid members from accessing, and more likely than anything cosmetics that cost a whole lot more than dubloons, such as pets.

Probably entirely wrong, but it's something I've felt since launch when they flipped the script on their game and became a 'game as a service'. Can't really pull that off if they split the community too much into players who've paid for added content and those who haven't. So I expect many free changes to the game still, but there will be those few things that aren't so free, now that we're past the launch buzz and Gamepass advertising. And once we start seeing even more MS Exclusives on Gamepass and play anywhere... SoT just might slip into the backburner and become less of the reason people have to pay that $10/mo versus now the game being THE reason to pay. After all the other gamepass games are either old, or forgettable. And State of Decay 2 was a bug laden mess that unlike SoT which has big bug issues.... was practically unplayable at launch and has since become the 2nd string gamepass game with cruddy "DLC" no one really cares for except superfans.

  • @crimsonraziel Thanks, anyway I'm really hyped for Forsaken Shores so it's good to know that SoT will be getting a permanent addition to the map rather than a temporary.

  • @fenderbendur For cooking, Rare would have to introduce some more resources to cook with. I mean, there is a tonne of spare barrels on our ships that have no purpose whatsoever except to look authentic. I too love getting achievements for doing anything and everything. I'm a bit of a completionist.

  • @quixoticrocket I have faith that Rare can make this game interesting. It has so much potential!

  • @spectrazy666 Thanks! The thing with the ice skeletons, I don't like seeing the same mobs over and over again in completely different places. I want enemies to symbolise their home or biome. I understand it's really similar to the shadow skeleton but right now I can't think of anything else that would make the ice skeleton unique.

  • @becausescience1 only a charged attack can brake ice

  • The Frozen part of the world sounds cool.
Just imagine the cosmetic options for that area.

  • @spectrazy666 and cannons maybe

  • @sgt-palooggoo I was thinking of some really cool ship cosmetics. The sails would be light blue with a large white snowflake in the middle, and the edges would be torn and jagged.

  • "Before i do anything, can I just ask about the Forsaken Shores thing. Will we still be able to go to Devil's Roar after the event, or will it become inaccessible after."

Why would they make a giant new section of the map, and then get rid of it after the event.....??

    Slow your roll, matey.

First off - your claims about what Rare had planned are based on what? That sounds like pure conjecture. Also, looking at the art book for SoT, it's quite clear they had pretty BIG plans from the start.

Second, they've been quite explicit that there are six major content updates coming this year. Hungering Deep, Cursed Sails and Forsaken Shores are the first three. The second set of three are coming within this calendar year and aarrr free. Source: https://www.seaofthieves.com/news/sea-of-thieves-content-plans

Thirdly, the game as a service model isn't something that Rare decided to do at launch. This was talked about in interviews waaaay before it launched. This was always (or at least, for much of the development time) the intent. Everything about SoT is modelled on a GaaS title.

Granted, they did adjust their roadmap considerably to adjust to demand from the playerbase. That should actually be commended. Was that influenced by Game Pass? Almost certainly - it helped SoT have a big enough launch to warrant investing in free content (speaking purely from a business perspective).

As for SoT having big bug issues... depends how you define 'big' I guess, but I'd say it's generally been pretty good. Some kinks to be ironed out yet (e.g. I miss the Kraken) but they've been pretty good in correcting problems, I'd say.

  • @blooddoll22 DLC’s stay free, that is there true promise now and forever on until the end. Micro transactions are for cosmetics that is something they also said (pets might end up being obtained through micro transactions but even they said there are more die hard in game ways to get the items without cost to your salary).

  • @wilbobaggns secretly the kraken isn’t there because then you would have to fight it while doing skelly ships

    Edit: and Megan the megalodon

  • @wilbobaggns said in The Event After Forsaken Shores.:

    Slow your roll, matey.

First off, with respect. I won't be slowing anything. Rather, I'd suggest you slow your own roll and understand that this is a discussion forum where ideas or perspectives are meant to be fairly shared, and that my post... isn't nearly as harassing as you might think if you read it more carefully. Not that I need to justify myself... I shall.

First off - your claims about what Rare had planned are based on what? That sounds like pure conjecture. Also, looking at the art book for SoT, it's quite clear they had pretty BIG plans from the start.

ok, well, First off... my 'claims' aren't claims. They aren't even expressed as fact. They are expressed as off the wall and considerations. I never claimed to have the truly insider look at Rare, any more than you might have one, to really know what's going on beyond the videos presented and the words of Rare themselves. Of which, I don't take as gospel, I take as offerings of what's up as best as they're allowed to share legally. And from what I see, they planned the game much differently, their own words, from the direction it's going now. They also never planned the game as a game as a service until much later than they would have been comfortable with. Something they've cited in various videos. I'm sure they had "Big plans" but they also called this a "big" game... to wit... it's not. There's 4 voyage types, skeletons, sharks, and storms. Without the intention for this to be a GaaS until late into development/launch and having to in their own words change everything based on feedback and the new direction of the game post launch... I think it's fair to surmise that where the game was going to be, isn't the same as where it is going now.

Which regardless of how perfectly accurate that 'claim' is... holding it as an opinion isn't a sin. In fact, isn't even that wild of an idea if you think about it.

Yea, I know they plan for more releases. I also know they plan of maintaining the position they're going to free overall. That doesn't do anything to my speculation in the least aside from perhaps update the distance or dates my suggestions or perceptions, false as they may be because clearly the use of those words demands further explanations. But again, I predict upcoming releases to have "some" costs associated with them. Be it the perpetually delayed "Micro-transaction pets", or outright DLC additions. I don't guarantee any of this, but I do see it as likely as we drive nearer to the end of the announced content.

Thirdly, the game as a service model isn't something that Rare decided to do at launch. This was talked about in interviews waaaay before it launched. This was always (or at least, for much of the development time) the intent. Everything about SoT is modelled on a GaaS title.

I actually misspoke some, though the hallmark of my intention remains. My mis-representation is that they've mentioned on more than one occasion how their entire development roadmap changed at launch and if you listen close they do mention the GaaS wasn't an initial plan even if it was altered earlier than my words imply. So, yes, I also stand that for the years before hand which this title was under development that they'd been developing it as something other than a GaaS and they changed that. So even if during 'much of the development time' the perspective stands. Though my phrasing is rough on that metric. You'll also notice how speculative my own words are when I use terms such as "Probably entirely wrong", "I've felt" (a speculative phrase), and so on... again remarking that my opinions on this thread are less than concrete and are only a sharing of valid opinion, even if not accurate in their prose. Which is what discussion forums are all about.

Granted, they did adjust their roadmap considerably to adjust to demand from the playerbase. That should actually be commended. Was that influenced by Game Pass? Almost certainly - it helped SoT have a big enough launch to warrant investing in free content (speaking purely from a business perspective).

    As above.

As for SoT having big bug issues... depends how you define 'big' I guess, but I'd say it's generally been pretty good. Some kinks to be ironed out yet (e.g. I miss the Kraken) but they've been pretty good in correcting problems, I'd say.

I define big as having to post videos remarking about how the inclusion of bugs every patch forces dynamic changes to the development methods such as to split into teams and offer longer lead time hoping it's enough of a change. I remark as big as seeing new introductions to the game such as handing off bananas creating such instability that they turn the feature off to fix it as soon as it's added. I remark as big being the removal whole cloth of elements that have been around since launch simply to get the latest update out at the promised time, and being faced with a choice - keep our content drop date or get rid of pieces. I see big as including bugs that have been around since launch and only get partially corrected even now. I see big as when I am an hour or longer into an Athenas and the server boots whole crews at once. I define big as having a known issues list that is perpetually growing versus being reduced. There's more to that point...

But I see big bugs... as being bugs that we've been dealing with the existence of since launch.

I'm not stupid. I respect that bugs will exist in a game, particularly one that adds new content regularly. But that isn't an excuse. There is no excuse.

In closing I'm happy to stand by my subjective, and opinion based position and I hold to it still. I never once claimed any of my statements as fact, I only ever offered an answer to my impression of the facts we do have. Your fully invited to discuss this and change my opinion, I actually quite welcome that.

But before you do, I'd suggest you slow your roll and read more closely the intention and admittedly off the wall perspective of my opinions. I never claimed them as fact, nor entirely probable, I only suggest that it stands that we will see some of what I've suggested and explained where I came up with the odd idea. I'm more than happy to respectfully discuss this. But don't expect me to tolerate being remarked upon with fighting words based on a post built around literally conjecture, intentionally off the wall perspectives, and potentially unfavorable cynicism that simply awaits hands on proof of intent versus supposed or spoken merits. Basically a posts built on actions being louder than words and waiting to see where the dice lie.

  • @becausescience1 I love it dude! Maybe we could fix the kracken, add moby d**k or a sea serpent. I’d also like to see ships be slowed after taking damage, front facing cannons, different cannon shots, harpoons to hunt whales and hook enemy ships, and a dingy (rowboat) that they might add in Forsaken though. I think you are a genius dude. Respond to me so I can feel the love. I also don’t think DLC material should just end after a month.

  • @blooddoll22 I'm unsure why you're so worked up, to be honest. It sounds like you've never heard the phrase 'slow your roll' - but consider that Urban Dictionary is not a reliable place to source information. This seems to have been the powder keg that set you off.

As for the rest, it mostly seems to come down to the fact that you're claiming all that is conjecture. If one is using theory, it should not be stated as fact.

And even if everything you stated is indeed conjecture - people are permitted to debate that with you. People are not, however, required to do so with velvet gloves.

  • @WilboBaggns all that is conjecture. If one is using theory, it should not be stated as fact.

Where in either of my posts is anything claimed as fact? - I have merely taken information at hand and am speculating. Something I remark upon commonly in the post. Someone choosing to debate that is fine, someone presuming the entire tone incorrectly, is not.

Like I said in my post repeatedly, off the wall, likely incorrect, and more.

So debate conjecture if you like. But at least understand that's what it is from the start. I don't really think it's a valid debate to simply call it out as hypothetical and useless speculation when it in itself says just that.

Better I'd prefer seeing the leads that form the basis of the conjecture settled. Because in all honesty.. I can see this being the reality down the short road... that more DLC will show up that is paid. That micro transactions will eventually be applied even in a small way... after all many people want the once proposed pets as an example... All followed by a continuation of bug fixes and quality of life updates.

Perhaps it's a little soon to be founding such comments.. but I'd wager in the future this is the sort of thing we will see. Though even in stating that I will never suggest Rare isn't busting their behinds trying to make us happy and that they aren't dedicated to offering more content to the game - whatever the motivation. Be it lack of content and a scramble to save face after review sites ripped them a new one at launch... or simply because it's what they've wanted since inception... I feel the points stand, although admittedly on loose platforms.

  • I think Blooddoll22 should get a Tactical Chundar on this thread.
He should get to throw a bucket of vomit for his entertaining rebuttal.

I don't, however, see Rare charging for any DLC that will split the playerbase.

BTW, the lore book has crew recipes, leading me to believe crafting and fishing may indeed be in the near future.

  • @becausescience1 I think we need new cannon shots other than the round shot. Maybe we could get bannister shots, grape shots, chain shots, or implement fire.

  • @macadoodledew I would love to add new encounters and bosses etc. I feel like what Rare wants to do with SoT is make it more random if you get what I mean. The base of the game is pretty boring after half an hour or so of completing voyages, but the things that make it interesting are all the things that don't happen to everyone. Kraken fights, encounters with other pirates, the adventures that we make for ourselves.

  • @macadoodledew What's a bannister shot? I've heard of the other ones and they would really fit in the game but just curious what it is.

  • @becausescience1 I meant canister. Like a shotgun shot.

  • @becausescience1 Exactly dude. Encounters will make this game and relief us of voyage grind for a while. I think they could also make more use of pirate lore and myth to come up with these encounters. Like Sirens

  • @macadoodledew Thanks, anyway when these cursed cannonballs come live for everyone to use, there's gonna need to be some serious tweaking to balance them properly.

  • @macadoodledew Once I find out how to use screenshots properly imma take one of every cave painting or mysterious object i can find. Might put them all together and post them with descriptions and speculation.
