Everything is way too expensive.

  • Hi Devs et al.

OK, so as a working dude I don't get an opportunity to play as much as I would like, but this weekend I had 3 days of do whatever I want. I thought it's been a while so I will stick SoT on. Now I play this solo only, I don't have mics and a headset etc, and have no real desire to play with strangers. Now, as this game is playable solo, by it's very design, I'd expect that there would be some concession to make progression in single player somewhat possible, at the very least fun. The issue I have is two fold.

    1. Quests - Yesterday I bought a gold hoarder's quest and as luck would have it it was one where you have to work out the clues. These are much more fun than the X marks the spot quests. This particular quest had 3 parts before I could find the treasure, it was a bloody tricky one to decipher too, and the quest took the best part of 30 minutes to complete. My reward for that tricky quest and 30 minutes of my life? That' right a castaway chest. What a slap in the face!

    2. Having played many quests, with the occasional captain's chests but mostly cast-away and and more often than not, seafarer's chests, I take my hours and hours and hours and hours of grinding to the store. Maybe i'll buy a sail, or a flag, or paint my boat or something. I open the store and it's 70,000+ for a SAIL???? I go to the clothes shop ind it's 20,000 for a hat??? What in the name of all that is holy is going on??

When these quests you are grinding away at, for hours, are paying out in bloody castaway chests how long do you guys think this game is going to last before it ends up as a trade in?

"you need to put the time in" " you need to git good" "blah blah blah". As discussed, unless you are unemployed, a student, single, a child, you don't have that sort of time, especially if you are a solo player. How much spare time you have should not be currency, ever.

I understand these types of games need to string it out a bit, but Jesus wept, this is taking the cake.

In a nutshell, the game has no feeling of reward or progression in single-player. I want to enjoy it, but you are making that impossible.

I was ignored on twitter for this issue, maybe i'll get some feedback here

On the plus side I am really enjoying the new skeleton types and the free-roaming Megladon :oD

  • @midnightbarber3 Ahoy matey!

Sorry to jump on your exquisitely, long, but well-written post with my quick post... but, this next week we should be seeing a drop in prices at the outpost shops so if you have your eyes on anything, in particular, you may want to save your gold for now and buy them during the upcoming event.

  • Rare on solo play:

You choose to play solo, you chose the hardmode of this game. Skeletons will get really hard later on.

I do an Athena quest in 3 hours with my buddies, this also includes at least one skull fort many bottlequest maps and some shipwrecks, and when we're done I can buy one of those fancy 70k sails easy. So don't fret get a mic get some friends together and play this game as is intended.

  • when u level up u get better loot ,idk for me it dosent feel to expensive.

  • @musicmee whilst you can play SoT solo, you really can't play it solo for very long past level 10 on the guilds.

Things are expensive to encourage players to form/join crews to make the most of the voyages and to speed things up. Cursed Sales will being a decent discount to all things tomorrow, but you do have to put the work in to earn the nice pretty things in this game and that my friend will require you joining a crew. There are plenty of groups on Xbox, social media that you can join to find like minded people to play with.

Hope you can find a few to enjoy the game to the fullest my friend.

  • Agreed on that one... although I made some good progress by doing solo gold hoarders and merchants. I would definitely steer clear of doing Order of Souls solo though... although, the recent gunpowder skeletons may have made that a tad easier to complete while sailing solo!

  • Playing solo you might be better off hitting shipwrecks and skim coasts for shiny objects/ chests until you are in mid 20s and have better quests.

I don't know, I frequently play solo and I'm 37/37/37 atm. As @Musicmee says, there's really no difference at higher levels for the Gold Hoarders and Merchant Alliance difficulty wise.

So you chose to play in "hardcore" mode, and you're complaining that stuff is expensive?

    It's supposed to be!!

What would be the point if everything could be bought with only doing a couple of voyages?

The game would get dull really fast.

Everything should feel like an achievement, if you see a fancy hull on the horizon it's a sign that player knows what they are doing.

Other than the introduction of finding gunpowder barrels I agree.

The Order of Souls on the other hand is different, those skellys get tough later on, nothing serious for a team, but solo they would be annoying.

  • @shaggy2000 I play in solo mode because I don't wan to play with strangers. I'm not complaining that it's hard, I'm complaining that the progression system is too much of a grind for cosmetics. It's a GAAS game, it's going to be going for ages, just let me paint my boat to make it a little bit more fun.

  • Riddles only pay out castaways and seafarers chests. X marks the spot in one voyage I once got the groggs chest 2 captain and 3 seafarers chests and took me less than 20 minutes. The best thing to do is dice roll only hit the small islands ignore the large ones and only hit the medium islands if they have 3 or more chests and ignore all riddles I average about 3k gold per half hour doing this.

They need to change that then. Riddle quests are much more fun, the harder the quest the bigger the payout should be.

I have to disagree at this point. The only way to make currency without spending your spare time would be Pay2Win, which most of us don't want to see.
As the progression in SoT is based only on cosmetic stuff, it doesn't make sense to give away everything for low prices and don't leave stuff to work for.
There are a few quite cheap versions of some items (sails for example), but most stuff should be something you have to work for, really earning it.

Needs to be a happy medium, Dude. I don't want micro-transactions, but I also want some feeling of there actually being a point to playing the game.

Is this true? I don't think it is?

@MidnightBarber3 On another note, as you progress through the levels you will start to find better chests, skulls etc that earn you more money. Easiest way would be to go open crew and hope that the person you match with is a higher level. You don't have to talk to each other but it just means you can get that gold quicker!

  • @midnightbarber3 I work 40+ hours per week have 2 children and a Wife. I also have most cosmetics and a million gold on my account to buy the new legends cosmetics for my ship.

    You're doing something wrong ^_^

No-one is telling you to play with strangers, just make some friends and play with those. I've got plenty and I'm on a galleon every evening earning enough told to fill my coffers to the brim.
The game is centered around teamplay, it's great to work with others towards a common goal.

Also I've been looking this up but what in the lord Spaghettimonsters name is GAAS?

  • @midnightbarber3 G'day mate.
I'm sure that most of us thought the same about those ridiculous prices when we started too. I know I was thinking they're crazy.
But as you get on in the game there is very little you can purchase anyway, so the money isn't everything... well not to everybody.
I have close to two million in gold and 350 doubloons with nothing bookmarked to purchase. I have bought a set of sails that I purchased & used once whilst with a random crew and I have at least one of each item upgrade and two of each weapon.
But as they are only cosmetics they make no difference to how I play the game.
As for clothing, well I don't see my clothes anyway so I don't care what others see me in. lol
Having said that I did pre-order the game, therefore I got the black dog outfit and have worn it ever since the code finally arrived. Since then I have bought a new hat. lol

I know that prices are excessively high but to some it gives reason to continue battling through voyages. If everything was cheap there would be even less reason to play on.

As for playing with strangers. Although it sounds dirty, it's not that hard to find a decent person who shares your mindset. I found a regular crew mate on these forums and a lot more who I have sailed with on numerous occasions.

Crew mates bring extra fun to the game.
Please do yourself a favour and reconsider joining someone for a few duo runs until you have built an understanding of the friendship and trust.
Read posts here and decide whether you at least share some views with someone here and drop them a line either via forum PM or Xbox app message.

Many use the forum to meet others by starting a thread on the topic. Use it like a dating site.
Mention where you are globally and which time zones you most frequently play SoT.
Tell of your rep and which factions your prefer or need to catch up on.
Buy a headset, even a cheap one is better than nothing.

The sooner you share the burdens of quests the sooner you can afford the most exorbitantly priced cosmetics.
Video games are meant to be fun and fun times are best shared with others or at least one other.

Fair winds and happy sailing. :o)

I don't have the time to be on every evening. I have a missus that wants to spend some time with me, and I work 45 - 60 hours a week and a 3 hour daily commute. I'm really not doing something wrong, as a man in your situation, you are without a doubt the epitome of the exception to the rule.

GAAS = games as a service.

  • @midnightbarber3 Well if that's the case count your losses, don't blame a games developer for your lack of time to spend with a game.

Where I live it's against the law to work 60 hours a week and your commute will count to work hours if it's longer then an hour.

I'm glad I live in a western nation.

  • @hynieth I'm not blaming anyone. I'm a paying customer pointing out the folly of the prices. It's in their best interest to make people want to keep playing the game. I played it all weekend and all I could afford was one red sail. That was one 10th of the cost of a patterned sail. Do they think I am going to plough 10 weekends into the game just to buy one sail. Unless there is another point to the game than to actually buy stuff then someone please enlighten me, because I am not seeing it.

I live in London. In my profession you work the hours that need working. Commute does not count as work time here.

Riddle quests have always been the biggest waste of time, you say yourself it took you half an hour to do one... In half an hour I would be half way through an Athena and have 10k gold to show for it.

If you play with strangers they may have higher level quests that will mean you never dig up a castaway again. If you want to max out your gold per time you can't spend half an hour on one voyage.

I'm having fun on the high seas, why can't I look pretty for a reasonable price, whilst I do so? Is there anything wrong in suggesting that the game be more rewarding for playing it? It's not a new concept. Look what happened to Battlefront 2. If SoT had the ability to buy stuff outright, with these prices being for grinding, this game would be in the same boat - no pun intended.

  • @midnightbarber3 said in Everything is way too expensive.:

    What's an Athena?

The solo option specifically states it's hard mode, Athena is a pirate legend quest that normally takes about 2 hours.

As a pirate legend I can tell you that the cosmetics are not over priced, as you level up you gain enough gold to get everything you would like to buy. If it was all handed to you on a plate no one would play as you need to be rewarded for the time you put in.

Fair enough if you don't want to play with random folks, but it is the fastest way to gain gold and levels. Making friends will make your gaming experience 1000% better than it is right now.

  • @midnightbarber3 As I said before, you judge this on your own situation.

Me and my mates make enough gold on a 3 hour run to buy one of those "over priced" items and I've already stocked up enough to buy the most expensive items on sale.

If you don't have enough time to play games why should it reward you? Do you want to take away the reward of achieving something really nice for a high price for those who do have the time for this hobby? Remember that there are enough people who complain about there not being really nice exclusive/ expensive items on sale too. And for those who complained about the ship cosmetics there are now the 7k gold sails.

  • @midnightbarber3 The entire game is built on cosmetics. Although there is very little in offering, the game release was simply pushed through the door and onto the shelves a year too soon. Thank you Micro$oft.

Rare are adding the much needed cosmetics but whether they arrive soon enough is up to the individual player.
In lieu of content, Rare suggests that the journey is more important than the destination "Make your own adventures".
Yeah it sounds like a cheap way out for them but with friends it isn't all that hard.

I've tried playing solo and I've played with random crews. The game is dull and colourless to me. However when I play with people who were once strangers but now are regulars, we share plenty of laughs.
It's an entirely different game and all for the right reasons.
So much so that I could play on an Australian server with a ping of 80 but usually not at the same time as fellow Australians are playing SoT or I join my American friends and endure a ping of 300+ just because I enjoy the great company rather than playing solo.

Don't get me wrong, I do have some great Aussie SoT mates that I enjoy sailing with but they're hardly on during my gaming time.

  • @hynieth said in Everything is way too expensive.:

This post is "I'm alright, Jack" personified.

Once more, with feeling - The items are waaaaaaaaaaaay too over-priced for the time you take grinding.

Solo player is built into the game - solo player takes waaaaaaaaaay longer to build up treasure.

  • @midnightbarber3 What's an I'm alright Jack?

I've said it before and I'll say it again. If we could buy all items at a really low price as you'd want there'd be no incentive for a lot of the folks to play the game. I've got all I'd ever want and then some and I've never felt things were overpriced. And with me many others.
No developer in his right mind is going to cater in game prices to a person spending maybe 3 hours per week on a game like this. That'd make it so others will have nothing to spend gold on.

Yeah and Rare has never said Solo play would be easy. It says so on the tin.

  • Gunpowder skeletons has totally ruined the experience for low level casual solo players I mean really, wipe a player playing solo. The fluidity has been ruined in a quick attempt to help solo players to pirate legend which goes against the premise this game promised. Legend should only be for hardcore team players as the game intended anyway.
