Gold skeletons spawning in high locations is a problem

  • So, yesterday a buddy and I were knocking out Order of Souls quests. He had to AFK after two or three voyages, so I decided to complete the last map myself. It was 4 golden skeletons on Shipwreck Bay, one of which was a captain. The problem is that these guys spawned at the peak across from the fallen mast, very far from water. I managed to get lucky with a gunpowder skeleton spawning with the captain wave, killing three of the non captain's pretty much outright. The captain, however, would not go down.

I tried everything to kill this guy. First I grabbed a pistol and blunderbuss instead of my usual cutlass and blunder combo. I expended all of my ammo on him and he didn't go down because he can eat a banana faster than you can reload. Then I thought "Okay, I'm an idiot. Why didn't I grab a water bucket?"

So, I grab a bucket, climb the peak again, douse him, and then start going to town. Again, no luck. After emptying the blunderbuss into him point blank, he lost the water debuff and went into banana cronching mode and regenerated. So I thought okay, pistol shots first, then water bucket, then blunderbuss.

Again, same thing. Five shots from a pistol, bucket, and then one blunderbuss shot and he eats a banana.

So, I think to myself the only way to keep him from eating is to use the cutlass. Run down, bucket, climb back up, and then try switching up the order of delivery for the blunderbuss, bucket, and cutlass hits to keep him from eating. Nothing was working.

Eventually, I just gave up and lobbed a bunch of cannonball at him, which was still difficult because of the fact he was inside the area on top of the peak right after the mast and I couldn't see him.

The point I'm trying to make here is that golden skeletons that spawn in hard to reach places are incredibly difficult to kill and very time consuming. Half the time I just won't bother if they spawn somewhere out of reach of water. Krakens Fall, Sailors Bounty, Smugglers Bay, Thieves Haven, Old Faithful Isle, etc. Almost every large island has a spawn at the highest point and when golden skeletons are there, especially a captain wave, it's almost a waste of time to bother.

Two ways to fix this are to either have water near the peaks of large islands, or to tune down the damage required to kill these skeletons so that it is near the same area as the veggie skeletons, if not just a little harder because they move so much slower. I'm not asking for a significant down tuning. I actually really like the challenge! I just think any enemy that is supposed to be killable by a single player should be tuned that so they are in fact killable without having any choice but to resort to cannon fire just because they spawned in a weird location.

    Cheers!

  • This is why I collect explosive barrels from forts before I head off to fight skeles. It's the best way to deal with them.

    No, it's not a problem.
Just spend your time in preparation, instead of writing forum posts.

  • @killthulhu19k i had this once in the open beta. took a while, but you can just lure them towards the water. there you can take them out easiliy. you can also try to lure them towards an ammo box on the island (on big islands there is always at least 1)

Well on Shipwreck Bay, you can't actually lure them towards water. The shipwreck you have to climb requires jumping. So, they get halfway down the mast that acts as a bridge and they stop walking. Other islands are similar.

And I'm aware of proper preparations and grabbing explosive barrels. This isn't my first rodeo and I'm definitely not a new player. The ability to use explosive barrels doesn't invalidate my point. In fact, I specifically said in this particular encounter a barrel skeleton spawned with the wave and I blew it up to kill the first three. The captain was caught in the blast wave and was unphased. He just banana'd it and kept on walking.

  • You basicly are able to kill them with your cutless it just takes a while. Also you can grab a water bucket and throw it in their face to trigger the rust-effect there are enough possiblilitys to deal with them it meight be annoying but it's possible to handle :)

  • @killthulhu19k yeh ive had gold ones on top of thieves haven but at least water is near but i have found maybe im just lucky on the bigger islands they are near shore but yeh golds are not fun up top but at least we got the barrel skeletons to negate water now

On Shipwrecked Bay you can shoot them with the cannons of your ship, if they spawn on the top position.
But, yeah, this would require "preparation" (by parking your ship properly) and this is what some players are unable to do. They want everything and do nothing for it.
Running into everything with no clue and complaining in the forums afterwards...

  • @killthulhu19k I feel your pain! I can't tell you the RL headaches I've gotten smacking away with my sword at those golden gold hoarders. I can say from experience that if you keep smacking them, you will eventually kill them.

I wouldn't mind small puddles we could lure them into though. There are a few times we've found them in places with no water and they won't follow no matter how hard you try. I don't solo, but there are times when it's just up to me and I find using my words helps me get through it. "You filthy, tarnished, piece of fake gold!" "I'll just keep ringing your head until it falls off!" It gets more interesting the longer the battle takes, but I find it helps and it gives my family a good laugh.
