I read this, I was mega #hyped, went to this Forum for an exciting Thread about Bilge Rat Progression and I found...nothing....except 20 Rainbow Flag Threads with 1000+ Replys oO really people? I haven't played since the day after THD released and I hated it because of the forced cooperation. The quest was lame and the fact I needed a fifth wheel to summon the big shark was ridiculous.
Now I read with this weekly skeleton throne event I'll once again be forced to work with people I loath having to interact with because normally they just want to sink you.
This game is in a death spiral sadly and there is no way to ignore that. It felt rushed and lacking because of the stupid game as a service model and now the player base has moved on.
I wanted this game to have nothing but success from the start but nope.
Maybe in a year or so it will be worth revisiting but for now it's on the back burner for me.

The issue here is that my crew and I along with many others had a blast with THD. Partying up with other crews was the funnest time I've had in this game. And IMO content that rewards cooperative play is a major plus. Think of it this way. It's either get sunk trying to cooperate. Or just get sunk. Either way I'm stealing your loot. Meaning at least with this system we have incentive to cooperate vs. just killing each other at these thrones to get the loot we all want regardless. It's a social game. If you're not a social person then SoT really isn't for you.
@celestron90 We'll still have that co-operative aspect with the Skeleton Thrones too and who knows for subsequent content and events!

The co-op aspect is great - but don't think of it as being forced, you don't have to do it at all! You just get different rewards for choosing to do it, which is cool. We need that diversity. I like the fact that we know anyone with the "shark slayer" title must have teamed up with someone to get it, and there will be something similar for the skeleton thrones - but if you don't like co-op, then why would you want the title that says "I did co-op to get this"??
@katttruewalker So for the larger ones, is it like a Galleon and a Sloop? Or does it just mean 2 different crews, with 2 sloops?

@celestron90 So you are saying that you would steal loot even joining up to do the event.... unless of course there were enough of you that were like minded that grouped together to do the event. Then once you have done the event that mindset returns to all out PvP. Then you sink and loot those trying to access the event that needs co opetation. Nice.

But no-one if forcing you to do the event or even the Co-Op side of it. You do you. Go around killing people and plundering ships.
It's the same as in any game really a matter of choise. You choose to not co-operate and the game stays the same as it was, no shift in dynamic.
Half the thrones are activated by a single person/ crew just like with THD where you could do the whole quest solo except for the last part. You'll still get some of the rewards but not all. Other games have raids that require a load of people to work together to get more rewards. I've never heard a PVP World of Warcraft player go nuts over a mount he couldnt get because he didnt raid.

@hynieth It doesn't take away from the fact it is an arena sandbox. WoW or any MMO is a massive multiplayer game, hosting thousands of people at once and sometimes up to 20-40 in instanced encounters. Which, are completely optional but provide gear (Which include the mounts you spoke of.) that give the player a noticeable advantage over others. That is why they are sought after.
SoT provides cosmetics and this new "Forced team" gameplay was met with mixed emotions ever since THD hit the waves. You saying "You just won't get all the rewards." is kind of rude to the playerbase that don't like playing with random people and quite frankly? Given the history of gaming in general, it is like a much higher chance you will be trolled if you do group with the people, than if you didn't, so you can't blame people for being skeptical.

The trouble is in a years time the game will not be a great deal better than it is now. Yes they'll be more content and features but you'll have missed the ride.
Take the upcoming skeleton thrones. From what I understand these will remain in the game forever. But after the weekly event ends they're going to be pointless window dressing. For the next two weeks they're worth visiting as they offer rewards but after that they are only "world enrichment".
It sounds like you should log in and have a quick play every week to keep and eye on the progress rather than shelving it for a year.
@kashaarafall If you read up you might have noticed that you can buy all the cosmetics from just doing the solo stuff.
As for the experience you can only get when you work together well you chose to not do that. They give incentives noone is forcing you. You're acting like rare is forcing you.

The last event you got most of the rewards except for the Shark Head, title and Scars.This event will have 100 coins, 50 from solo thrones 50 from the Co-op thrones.
There's a hat jacket and dress. it's 20 each for an item so that's 2 items in the bag and 10 coins left for the next event. Most people wont bother with the dress. and if you really want that dress you just do one co-op throne. so yeah I stand corrected on my second statement most items is correct in my first one.
Doesnt subtract from the point I'm trying to make that games often use a reward mechanic where people with certain playstyles wont get certain items unless they dip their toes in unfamiliar waters.
I can name PVP modes in singleplayer games for achievements skins etc. I can name GTA 5 and GTA online to access all the DLC. I can name any MMO with a PVP/PVE/Solo playstyle I can name so many examples I just picked the one I thought most people would relate to.

Seeing you state your complaint about needing a fifth person and the "normally they just want to sink you" clearly shows you didn't put in any effort to experience what the devs were trying to show you.
Loads of people that actually played it suddenly realised that there were other options than just sinking everyone you see. Most experienced friendly crews for the first time since release, ships sailing next to eachother, beating a hard boss with the help of other crews and most of the times even hanging out afterwards to do a fort or drink some grog.
Just the simple reason for requiring a unknown 5th person to get the "reward" was already a great incentive to make the interaction on the seas more interesting and the general attitude of players towards others somewhat more open. It wasn't perfect ofcourse as there was hardly any reason to do the event after you did it once, but I'm sure they'll work this out in upcoming events.
Maybe check the game out in another year to see if it has something to offer you that does interest you, but from your general tone of the post I sense you'd be more comfortable in a game like Bloodwake or Skull & bones.

It is not about displaying sexuality. I will be flying the flag. Can you guess what my sexuality, sexual identity, or gender is based simply on that? If not then consider the idea that the flag’s underlying message is to indicate SUPPORT for others. If I wear a pink ribbon it does not mean I am displaying my breast cancer, that I have breast cancer, or that those without breast cancer matter less.

I don't think we know everything about it but broadly...
The Bilge Rats will have their own progression screen in the pause menu. There you will have commendations that you can fulfill which will net you Bilge Rat doubloons; up to a total of 100.
You can use these doubloons to unlock the event cosmetics or to buy yourself a rep boost in the other companies. I feel the main question remains if the commendations are simply for doing all the thrones, or if some will require multiple completions to encourage replayibility.
I'm hoping for the latter since being able to boost the trading company of your choice would definitely make it easier to find crews willing to team up.
