Switch ships mid game

  • Let's say you are expecting a friend to sign on in the near future, so you get started on a sloop solo, then your friend shows up, you send him an invite, he joins, cool. That's a huge quality of life improvement to what we had before, but then let's say 1 or two more of your friends unexpectedly come online. Instead of ending your session to invite them onto a galleon, what if you could sail to an outpost and at the shipwright there was a "switch ship" option, that instantly scuttles your sloop and replaces it with a galleon.

    This could also work if you are playing a closed galleon crew of 4, and two of your mates get called off to do the dishes or something, and the two left could sail to an outpost and swap their galleon for a sloop so it's more manageable.

    What do you think? Any problems that might arise from this?

  • @rockinpodunk I must admit, when I read the title I screwed up my nose and thought Nahhhhhhh.

    But after reading the reasoning behind it I actually like the idea.
    I couldn't count how many times we have had to cut a voyage short and turn in so that we could add another player or two.

    We usually end up with a crew of three, switching from a sloop to galleon so my mate's wife can join us while she is at work (night shift). Then we switch back to a sloop when she knocks off and drives home. For that reason alone the swapping ship size would be even better if they would include a mid sized 3 person vessel (2 masts with two cannons on each side) but until such time, the swap feature would certainly help a lot of crews.

  • This idea sounds good and all but it also sounds highly likely to be a fragile feature that could break easily and become buggy. Maybe if the act of switching ships also reallocated you to another server otherwise you will cause server instability.

    Nope, that isn't the answer to any situation. We already have a 4 man vessel, they call it a galleon.

    Friends come and go and if you must STOP the session to get the only boat that will work for the new number of players....just to lose a player or two and have to STOP just to switch to the other boat.

    If only it didn't matter and there were extra ships at outposts that could be easily switched to at any time. Or like the OP's idea....can just switch at the shipwright....genius. Rare approaches with a paycheck!!

    Code, in order to work, must be flexible. A game, in order to be fun, must be flexible.
    When developers create a game with code that limits choices and flexibility....that's where the game and the code runs into issues.
