Sea of Thieves Wheel of Emotions - how does the game make you feel... a pirate's Plutchik.

  • Reading a lot of posts on the forums and seeing a really wide range of feelings evoked by the game and the experiences we have, I thought it might be interesting to revive this.

Basically it's a tool which Rare used during development to explore the effects on players emotions of different mechanics and experiences. Now that the game is open to a wider audience, it might be interesting to look at this again.

For me, at the moment, I'm definitely in the interest, anticipation, vigilance section with a sprinkling of joy here and there :D

  • @katttruewalker right now i am up there with the anticipation and optimistic pirates, also a bit distracted because of God of War. (but i got platinum so i’ll be back on the seas after maintenance!)

  • I think I'm some sort of banana starting at admiration, moving through joy, and into anticipation...

  • @katttruewalker
Nice model, I guess it could be a useful tool to get a general idea of people's current mindset.

I'm definitely going strong on the joy section with a lot of anticipation.

  • @katttruewalker
I'm with you on the interest, anticipation, vigilance section, but mine would come with a dash of annoyance & apprehension.

  • @KattTruewalker Wow! That's a really great tool for exploring our emotional responses in Sea of Thieves.

One of the things that makes Sea of Thieves so special is not only the broad spectrum of emotions you can feel while playing, but also how quickly you can move from one emotion to another.

You can be experiencing rage, anger or sadness because another crew took all your loot and then very quickly it transforms to surprise as a sloop pulls up besides you offering some assistance and you begin building on trust.

Then you might just be feeling the calm serenity as you're sailing to another island and enjoying the gorgeous waves. You spot a galleon and begin to anticipate their next move. Will they take interest? Will they try to distract or surprise you?

Then the fear builds as you notice they did a complete one-eighty and are heading straight for you! Do you accept that you're going to lose or do you stay vigilant and do your best to protect your hard earned loot?

All those emotions are in there and I believe that's one of the things that makes Sea of Thieves really special and a unique experience every time you sail.

  • @evasive-envy I absolutely agree with you, you can probably go through 2/3 of the wheel in just one session :D

  • @evasive-envy this guy pirates!

  • Frustration that perhaps the playerbase has turned what could have been an awesome game into 'Deathmatch on the sea'.

Disappointment that pirate legend isn't really a worthwhile goal for me at the moment, I thought it was meant to be 'the start of the game' However I realise now, that actually means - well, we planned for that to start in about a years time, but many of you got there earlier than we expected and now you all know there's nothing there yet.

Boredom - because while sailing around is fun and the scenery is beautiful, the world lacks any depth. There are no real hidden secrets to find, just the promise and tease of such things (go explore some underwater caves and feel the anticipation raise as you honestly feel you may have found something new and cool - only to find yet another empty cave, with a few nice looking bits of scenery). Perhaps this is why the seas have become deathmatch maps.. There really isn't much else to do after you get bored of your 4th fetch quest. I guess PvP offers some excitement, even though you rarely get any reward from doing so.

Yet I do remain hopeful that in time the game will improve and become something more worthwhile of my time.

  • @katttruewalker I think right now my compass is bouncing between NW and NE! Still loving what the game is now and excited for what's to come.

  • @luciansanchez82 I love that idea of using compass directions, aye aye mate!

  • @katttruewalker Pic just looked more like a compass than a wheel to me. What has SoT done to me?!

  • Indifference is what I feel.

  • @katttruewalker
Great idea for a thread here! I have to say that I have experienced quite a few emotions on this diagram- & it's to SoT credit that a bit of code and programming can elicit that...

I'm definitely situated in the top of the compass- N- NE- in the optimism sector... I feel serenity when I'm sailing around on the beautiful waters (& like so many others have said, it's a great antidote after a long day at work...) I feel joy, too- that elation, & that smile that crosses your face when you know you've done a good job- cashed in a good voyage, or pulled off a cool manoeuvre...
I have great interest for this game- coupled with anticipation for the new content which is coming in the near future...
I haven't felt rage or anger, but I have felt annoyance from time to time... Not, as many would expect, from trolls or griefers (I've had very little of that, so far, thankfully), but from technical issues- getting dumped out of the game unexpectedly is pretty damn annoying...
I feel acceptance for this game- I also hold plenty of admiration for Rare, their vision & what they are attempting to do with SoT- more power to them, & long may they continue to work on this wonderful game!
Overall, I will say that I feel happiness- a word not on the wheel- when I log on to SoT & go about my piratey business... ;D

The sea of thieves emotional compass, nice catch dude :)

@KattTruewalker Whip some artist to change it to a compass! :)

  • before I played: vigilance
    early to mid-testing phase: serenity
late in the testing phase: annoyance
    end of testing phase: boredom

This seems to indicate that I drifted from optimism to contempt, but where I'm at is a lot closer to disappointment/disapproval. I guess I skipped remorse since I didn't buy it.

  • Was interested , optimistic , then anticipation , boredom and for most of the time boredom, contempt , loathing and anger

  • Nowhere on the bottom half. More optimistic and acceptance at the development process. Looking forward to updates and new content. I do agree, the game was released a little early for the $60 price tag, but I'm glad there are no paid DLCs which seems to be the norm. I think I rather pay 60 now, rather than 30 and then more when new content comes out.

Surprised no one else could see it to be honest!

  • Can also relate to submission. Has more to do with activities outside the game though.

    Keep it clean people!

Buying this guy a beer. I'm too blunt. Game sucks right now. Hard. Holding out hope, and this update will make or break this mess of a "game". Don't drop the soap again Rare.

  • I think apprehension alone sums up my thoughts. I've found most of Rare's decisions to be at best questionable, that said I do think there's still a good foundation, however my confidence that Rare can capitalize on that has been shaken.

  • It makes me angry because we were told the game would be filled with more to do and all we got was 3 fetch quest types. I was betting my bottom dollar this game would get far more content after the beta phase but nope I was wrong. We got a mess of bugs (some still unfixed) and limited content with the promise of more. So in effect people have paid for the promise of more content later.

  • @bloodfrenzy187 So.. where on the wheel are you? This is what this post is really about, how does the game make you feel while playing?

  • SSW for me. I will leave it at that, enough rants on the forums as is !

  • @katttruewalker Anger is on the wheel.

Well put...Perhaps that is where I am, I will ask my therapist!

  • @logansdadtoo Yeah I'm getting a little annoyed by the clothing recolors being called "new" cosmetics but I'm very hopeful for the Hungering Deep and other updates to come.

    Still loving the game.

EDIT: I should clarify, only the new ship cosmetics appear to be recolors. But still...

  • @KattTruewalker I'm all for orange, yellow and light green, with amazement frosting on top of that cake!

  • @clumsy-george Thank you, George, for adding your thoughts to this thread, I really appreciate it :)

  • Love the pirate re-skin on the wheel. I'm orange with a splash of green. Optimism, Anticipation and Trust with a sprinkling of Apprehension.

  • South West - Ripped off and dissapointed. Accepting I made a mistake purchasing this rubbish isn't easy and doesn't make it better.

    Scores out of 10.

Any port in a storm, eh?

  • @clumsy-george I admire Clumsy George; you can tell by the topics and observations that he is a solid person in real life and on the sea's. Sad that some bad apples still can ruin an otherwise fun run. Some of us gamers also long for the camaraderie that can be hard to find and keep while exploring, surviving, succeeding; ultimately sharing the spoils and relishing the experiences. True friendships can be made beyond mere alliances. C.G., seems big hearted and smart. I always like to see that this veteran alpha/beta player stays steadfast "glass half full"; makes his point and moves on with his "chin up", even when bruised; though he is advanced, I hope to sail with soon! O Captain! my Captain! our fearful trip HAS JUST BEGUN!
