Suggestions: Several Pirate(character) slots+Pirate Names

  • Hello.
Let me start by saying that I have no idea if this already has been suggested, or if Rare already has plans to do this. Now to my suggestion.

In short? I'd like to have more characters, and I'd like to be able to name our characters.
At this moment, when I start a game, I only have my 1 pirate to choose from. But I think it would be great to be able to have more characters to choose from before you start a voyage.
Also, just a gamertag is shown now while playing the game, but I think it would be super fun if your pirate can also have a name.

To be a bit more detailed about how this could possibly work.
In the first menu, you should have about 3(5? Idk) character slots. Each of these slots can be used to choose a different randomnised pirate, and you can name every one of these pirates individually. Before a voyage is started, you can choose which of the 3/5(Whatever ammount) pirates you want to play as. (By pressing L/R on the Xbone you just swap through your pirates in the main screen maybe? Something like that.)
Everything between these pirates is shared. Reputation, gold, clohtes, weapons etc. Everything. The only reason for choosing another pirate is for the looks.
The name you have given your pirate will be displayed in a smaller font under your gamertag. But this can possibly be turned off in the settings for people who do not care for names at all.

Why would I want more characters in this game? First of all, it's super hard to choose what kind of pirate I'd want to play as. I have a cool character now, but there are many different types of characters I'd also like to play.
Also, I play with different crews. And different crews have different pirates. My 1 pirate lady does not have enough time to sail out with so many different people! :p
A last note. I know names wouldn't really change anything big in this game, I just think it's a fun addition. And that's what this game is about. Fun. ;)

I love this game. I love the character customisations, and it would be amazing to use all those bought items on different characters. :)

    TL;DR:
Let us create and then choose between 3/5 pirates before we start a voyage. These pirates share everything(Rep, gold, etc.)
Let us name our characters. Just for the heck of it.

  • Not a fan of bumping my own topic, but I really wonder if other people would like this option too.
I personally am all for more options for customisation in this game, but not sure if people would like having actual different pirates.

  • sorry for no replies mate.

I actually agree on multiple characters per account, more roleplaying options, allowing for reliving those neat little starter moments, no real good reason to not have it, especially because the game is hellbent on pushing the xbox app, so having a name separate to your gamer tag doesn't sound bad at all. Great for roleplay too.

  • I am not a fan of gamertags shown above our heads without any leverage connected to them so I am almost there with you when it comes to actually naming the characters.

However, I would make so that we have specific names for each crew member. These names would be based on our roles which are dictated by our equipment compositions.

    Algorithm:

    1. first name pool; random, e.g. Jack
    2. role name pool; dictated, e.g. the Sniper
    3. revealed by a specific item
    4. gloomy name floats above our head

Note: Jack, Queen, King and Ace came to mind from an ordinary card deck.

  • I really like this idea, as someone who rolled the page over 300 times (not even exajurating here, I rerolled the first two characters because of a missing tooth in the front row. Spent 3+ hours trying to pick my character) and I still didn't get one I liked a lot. Would love to have other characters and names with titles. I'd be something like Hitash the (combat)Engineer (I love to blow things up).

  • I also really like this idea. My character is a larger man and an imposing figure, but sometimes I would like to have other options available. Also I love the idea of names rather than just using your gamertag. There would have to be a way to avoid having hundreds of Blackbeards and Jack Sparrows though.

  • I am fortunate in that my used Gamertag for SoT is Blooddoll22.

Though I would prefer the "22" be removed, I am pleased that I have at least the ability for my mates to refer to me in game as "Blood". The mental image of "Capt Blood" in my mind is an entertaining personal image.

But I feel pity for those with names like xXGamterTagObnoxiousXx as I can't imagine it being very immersive for them considering the theme of the game, and for me personally, it simply serves to remind me that I am indeed, in the xbox/microsoft community, and not in an entirely pirate themed community.

Even with "naming options" we will see the typical CoD styled, twitching child, xXXx or whatever. But, at least with "names" applied in game, there's a chance in hades I could actually end up with a name I generally prefer for a pirate.

Even better! To enhance immersion, offer unused pirate names via generator and a cycling wheel of name options like we have got the pirate generator!

I would much prefer names as an option, though I worry about the logistics of tracking a player down in the App if such a thing were implemented.

I also feel that having additional character slots would be valuable.

I do not feel these characters would necessarily deserve their own unique progress. But perhaps could at least be used as a skin for the player chosen as they enter any given game.

It would solve my upset that you get to use the character wheel all of ONE time and after that your locked, regrettable initial choice be damned!

Which, seems the theme of SoT... you get to make a choice ONCE and you have to live with it eternally. In a game, I don't know that this is a perfect choice.

  • @arch-fable The only reason I'd really, REALLY love to name my own character is Roleplaying meaning.
My first character has a name, backstory, everything. She's becoming super important, and if her name can't be Sea Granny it's just not her. XD

And the reason I'd like gamertags to be shown is for reporting and blocking reasons. But it could be turned off too if you'd like? Maybe that would be a nice option to add.

@UrihamRayne Thanks for your reply though! It made this thread popular. :p

@Hitash-Levat Mate, I feel you. I rerolled 2 hours and I had like 4 characters that I all REALLY liked. But they were all completely different. (An elderly Asian looking woman, a tanned buffed man, a tanned buffed woman, a white pretty lady, a dark skinny dude. I wanted them all.) I don't regret my current character, but I often think how those other characters could have fitted in the world.

@JayMeister03 Yeah true... I wouldn't like to see Jack Sparrow everywhere. XD Maybe make names unique? So 2 characters can't have the same name? In that case I'd have to get dibs on Sea Granny fast though! XD

    @GunnerDK -Looks at own gamertag- .... :I
Seriously though, random names would be fun but meh. I'd just like to name my character a name that I like. :p (Sea Granny intensifies)
I really DON'T want characters to have their own progress. Then I'd have to grind WAY too much. ;p
I just really want all them different skins for different adventures! (And my current character is way hard to play Hide and Seek with. XD She's just very big and obvious. ;p)

I can fathom a way how to do that without providing a tool for 'obscenity'. You could name the character the way you like, but it would only show to yourself. Of course others need to ask it from you in order to get it, but I think this would be a good path to take.

My first character has a name, backstory, everything. She's becoming super important, and if her name can't be Sea Granny it's just not her. XD

    Haha, roger that. ;)

Not showing gamertags and not recognising gamertags for reporting reasons are two different questions. Devs could code a way to make both work and keep it within theme even. ^^

  • @arch-fable Yeah I just like to be able to immediately see enemy gamertags just so I can quickly remember it.
But if they can find a way that will not show it in game that would be great.

Unless you don't need to, right? If we could have this ledger of encounters, it could serve us nicely. ^^

But if they can find a way that will not show it in game that would be great.

    True.

  • @arch-fable It’ mainly that I love cosmetics and being able to completely being sucked into the world the game creates(Omg this game with HUD off is amazing!) I do think that being able to get rid of cheaters and griefers is more important. Sadly.
Why can’t everyone just be nice so we wouldn’t need this? ;p

I like every game company that are capable to utilise ways to implement smart HUD designs. Those that imbue the objects themselves with the HUD elements. Usually FPS games and those with third person view have these issues.

I do think that being able to get rid of cheaters and griefers is more important. Sadly.

I think it is the least thing to worry about as a player, but the first thing to solve as a developer.

Why can’t everyone just be nice so we wouldn’t need this? ;p

Sometimes being nice is about showing the weaknesses of the resistance so they may grow. ^^

  • Oh my god! With the new cosmetics, I really hope we can have more characters! There is so much cool stuff now, but a lot just doesn't suit on my current character.
Anyone else having the problem they just wanna buy everything but just nothing suits on their char? XD

  • @yacantdutchthis multi toon...sure why not, but they all earn their own rep and gold.

As far as names....idk I used gamer points to change my name lol.

  • @fancypantzmcgee Just a question, but why do you want them all to earn their own gold and rep?

Because to me, that wouldn't really work in this game. Especially since it's such a grind, and you'd have to buy all items over and over again and I personally don't see a reason for that.

  • @yacantdutchthis I think the grind is exactly what makes me think this.

I won't get all butt hurt if it were to happen different. But to me, grinding the character is what...attaches you to that character. It's what give that toon life and nostalgia.

There are no experience levels, no skill tree. It would make sense to keep your rep and cosmetics if you still had other things to grind. But if get a toon to legend and them create a new one, I would lose steam on the second toon. I would always look at them as a touch counterfeit.

Idk, maybe I'm a romantic or something but I think it would cheapen the experience.

  • @fancypantzmcgee I totally get ehat you say! I personally don’t feel that way though, but I wouldn’t mind if they’d add the grind to every different character.

For me, I get attached to a character by the story that I give to it. Either by playing or the story that I would automatically make up for it. (For some reason I just can’t play a character and not think of a story for them while playing a game. XD)
Since the grind to level 50 usually isn’t what creates more in-game stories for me, it wouldn’t really matter if I wouldn’t have to grind every character. Doing forts, playing around on outposts and trying to befriend other ships are usually the things that actually seem to create stories for me.

Because when I’m grinding for level 50 I’m usually just trying to avoid everything and just do the voyage. ;p
I do see what you mean though.

  • @yacantdutchthis

I'd really like to see these as options, sometimes I don't want to sail around as KattTruewalker, so having other pirates to use who perhaps follow a different story and playstyle would be invaluable.

  • @katttruewalker Thanks fot replying! :)
I’m happy to see that many people agree on sailing around as someone else sometimes would be fun. ;)

  • Ooo a secret alter ego...I'll call him NotFancyPantsMcGee. Muuuhahaha

  • @fancypantzmcgee XD Yeah that's super smart because nobody would ever expect it! :p

  • I believe it’d be great to add a Asian side of characters. Pirates of the Caribbean are an example for the Asian pirates.

  • @tsumiia Asian side?
Aren't there already Asian characters? At least, my character seems slightly Asian to me. At least, to me she seems Asian. :p Maybe it's just me tho.
Or do you mean Asian cosmetics? Because I'm down for that.

  • I would like to see multiple characters per acct that share gold much like Destiny

  • @pliskon Yeah many games have several characters that share everything. I'd love that in this game since I feel like it would really fit the world.
Since the game is(Well, will be) so cosmetic heavy, you pretty much NEED several characters.
Like, half of the clothing items don't suit my character since she is just pretty big(Belts get HUGE on chubbier characters, and dresses usually are pretty ugly since they stretch so much.)
And since I bought tons of clothing items already, I'd love to try them out on other characters that I have in mind. (Because so many things I bought I just don't use on my character. Bought them to see them in game, but they just ended up being ugly.)

  • Shameless bump.
