Confession of a Sloop Captain

  • As primarily a Single-handed Sloop Pirate, Galleons are typically avoided at all cost or immediately attacked, depending on the mood of the day. Yesterday, I did the unthinkable...I assisted a Galleon by giving away all my stock. That's right, I befriended the enemy and voluntarily gave them all my bananas, cannonballs, and planks. To make matters worse, I even assisted them in unloading my barrels and re-loading theirs. But, this Galleon Crew was different, really. You see, they didn't immediately chase after me when they first caught sight of my sloop. And when I repeatedly approached within hailing distance of them, they chose not to respond with cannons or cursing. Instead, they chose to approach and cautiously inquire of my intentions. In fact, they approached a little too close and rammed my bow. Strangely, instead of boarding my boat and doing the usual, this Galleon Crew sent an emissary onto my boat that promptly went below and repaired the hole in my Sloop created by the Galleon's strike. When I explained that my journey of the afternoon was over, and I was wondering if they wanted my stockpiled goods, the Galleon emissary who had boarded my boat responded with "Sure, thanks." He didn't blunderbuss me, or poke holes in me, or make me walk the plank. So, for the next few minutes, we unloaded my Sloop and loaded their Galleon. After which, I was requested to join them on the Lido deck for a round of grog and a Hip, Hip, Hooray to me. I had my fill of their grog and bid them all a good day.

To this Galleon Crew, I thank you for the gesture of communicating before firing. And to all my Sloop-helming kin, I apologize for helping the enemy. But they were such nice Pirates!

  • It's a shame that meeting friendly pirates is a 'rare' event for some. My crew and I generally have a policy of only shoot if necessary, and we often have friendly encounters.

Yesterday, as we were getting our ready galleon ready to sail, a sloop approached, obviously wanting to unload, so we waved at them and told them that we wouldn't shoot them if they didn't shoot at us. We then spent 10-15 minutes chatting with them and playing about. We had a friendly sword fight on the dock, one of us verses one of them. We shot ourselves with the cannon back and forward from ship to ship, Shared a drink of grog and then wished them well as we set sail.

They said that we were the first friendly crew they had met, which again is sad to hear.

Oh and don't get me wrong, my crew does love a good bit of PvP, but we reserve that for those that 'deserve' it, but it's also nice to have friendly interactions too.

  • I've had a few of these nice encounters.
It just seems a shame that most of the time they have been, like the OP at the end of a session where either one, or both of the crews are far less anxious as they know they are heading off anyway.

This could be such a beautiful coop game if they add in a little more content that nudges us crews closer together.
