Look at these low quality islands...
The new patch made the draw distance way, way worse...
I feel like it actually got slightly better. But the spyglass still renders too low of an LOD. The point of LODs is that you can't actually notice them. Here, we obviously can.
Idk if they use distance based LODs, this should not be happening with screen space based LODs and either way still needs some tweaking. Without the spyglass it's fine tho, but the spyglass should just render LOD01 or 2 from that distance.Are animals, items and people still popping in from a way too close distance for you? They are for me. Still making the spyglass practically obsolete.
Great the islands render in a bit further away (the pop is still way too noticeable though) but it’s the interesting objects and people on an island that I’m looking for. Looking at trees and rocks isn’t exactly important is it? It’s everything you can interact with that needs to be rendered sooner and smoother. And this hasn’t changed AT ALL.
@tyburn-ketch
Animals, items and people are a seperate issue. The draw distance for those actors is too small, so they pop in when we should already be seeing them.
Island LODs looking ugly was a seperate issue. The draw distance for islands works correctly, you see them on the horizon and they're not popping in. Just the LOD levels are changing at distance or screen space size that is not right, so you can see the ugly LOD when you should be seeing the better one.Indeed.
I rather think the objects issue should be taking more presedence ... seeing as they are what you can interact with and should be looking for. I’m not sailing about looking for pretty trees and rocks to interact with. I’m trying to spot animals, chests, bottles, people. It’s ridiculous how you have to beach an island practically to see them “pop”.
This is the issue you need to address Rare.
@tyburn-ketch
I agree. But it seems Rare has a hard time figuring out that issue. Changing LODs is easier.@endosku11 said in The new patch made the draw distance way, way worse...:

While I do agree with the rendering changing for the worse,
it seems a little more real now. Its really not realistic to see things from that far away.
The fog of war should be greater- with more frequent pita storms- and more possibilities of encounters with ships.
Shooting your cannon should be heard from within earshot of another ship- and running into ships or coming out of a fog with a full billow- makes guarding your ship more important...
Leave it- I dont want to see 9 islands away and ships from 4-7 boxes away
That’s not the issue. The issue is seeing objects of interest “pop” into view when you’re practically on an island from your ship. At launch you could see these objects (and importantly people) from further away. A realistic distance using the spyglass. Now when you use the spyglass the objects aren’t rendered in - hence making the tool obsolete.

Excellent! Thank you.
@tedakin I see islands (your screenshots) like this all the time since last update which was on April 17th or 18th. all my islands through spyglass are clay like blobs. I am running a Xbox One X too.
@c00latr0n I'm on Xbox One X as well. Someone said it was always this way and it just wasn't. At launch and in the alphas the draw distance was fantastic. Then a patch came out the made trees and animals start popping in super close, then this update came out that made all the islands look like a pile of meat loaf until you're 75 yards away from them. Why such a huge downgrade? The performance was perfectly fine at launch as well.
@lefaux2 I don't know about anyone else, but my XB1 X on day one was perfect and had no graphical hiccups. Now the islands look like ground hamburger, my compass and watch are fuzzy (when I first pull them out), I can't see players on ships or animals/skeletons on islands (unless really close) and everything seems more hazy.
I'd love if they could just add a graphics setting for the XB1 and XB1 X. If a player is having issues, they could turn them down manually.
Every patch I keep crossing my fingers that the island LOD's will begin to get better, or the actors / item draw distances will improve and I'm constantly disappointed. What happened to when the game first launched!? I read through some developer post and it almost sounded like they either didn't believe there was a problem, or didn't think it had changed!?

I'd love to understand the reasoning behind this.
I mean.. other than "well, it's for XBOX".I run a 1080Ti for a reason... mostly because I enjoy playing great looking games.
Can't Rare just turn down the GFX options for XBOX and have PC players enjoy a good looking game?I was playing this game day 1 on my Xbox 1 X with no issues, the game was beautiful. I think the ONLY issue I had maybe once every 10-15 minutes was I would "stutter step" for a second. It was so minor half the time I barely noticed. I've been switching between PC & Xbox the past few nights, and the game looks equally bad on both now in terms of actors draw distance and island LODs.
@tedakin It wasn't this way from the start, that I know 100% for sure. The open beta, the final beta and the initial launch all had good draw distance on the islands, and the islands through the spy glass. (xbox one X). To quote someone else on this thread, "They look like ground hamburger now" and it really takes you out of the beautiful world they created. What surprises me, is that the patch notes do not address it as a known issue. Instead they worry about fixing scuttle the ship text on the ship of the damned. Just really odd to me. lastly, I have 3 other friends that see the hamburger islands too, two on Xbox one X and one on high powered gaming PC.

It does not seem like you spend that much time outside.
You can see things pretty far away. You can see a candle flame 1.5 miles away.
We can see landscape out to the horizon nearly 3 miles away or further if we are high enough or the landscape is tall enough.
So we should be able to see roughly a quarter of the distance of the map since the map is approximately 12 miles across to scale.
If you are in the crow's nest you should be able to see landscape almost the entirety of the map. Since 10 miles is what you would expect to see when in a crows nest.
I am not saying we SHOULD be able to see those distances. But claiming that it more "realistic" that we can't is nonsense.
I’ve come to the conclusion that the Devs are fully aware of this particular issue and wish it wasn’t the case.
My feeling is their hands are tied by some graphical issues that make the game unstable or unpleasant for some.
However I’d just like to reiterate that I believe you’re going to find a way to improve the situation Rare - and that you don’t stop trying.
Communicating with us in anyway you can on the issue would also be greatly appreciated. If nothing else - to stop these repeated posts that we feel are needed - to make sure you’re listening.
