this game needs a sense of rarity.

  • nothing in this game seems to be rare, you wont join a game in 5 years and say "woah this guy is a legend" or "this outfit was from back then".

i feel like this game needs such things, skeletons could drob gear sets with a 0000.1% chance, or make it so events last only 3 months and then never come back.

my best memories of games like these were if you could tell what that player went through, this game has non of that, ghost outfit is already spread everywhere, legend status is getting less "amazing" every hour.

you just have a sense of everyone is a nobody.
a guy once said to me a week ago "this guy is a legend while it means something", it made me proud, this will never be the case anymore and nothing else will if there wont be rarity to things.

why is the legend outfit not a recolored one till the first 1000 legends have showed up.

why not hide secret chests that only appear randomly within a week?

  • I agree. Keeping in line with the horizontal progression doesn’t mean everyone has to be the same. Even if it’s just Rare cosmetics - it’ll add some variety. You’re called rare Rare! Why is nothing Rare?

  • @eam-samaraka I agree. The way they've handled cosmetics so far is pretty horrible, considering it's the only thing we can spend gold on right now. I actually can't believe they thought "this is fine" and released it like that xD

I do enjoy the cosmetics that are in game, but there are way to few and some are even bugged (i can't buy the lvl 33 gold hoarders belt for example). And like you said it would be cool to see different ways to get cosmetics than just reputation level. I'm sure they will add that in the future though.

  • Eam! small world, hah. Figured I'd log in and give my two cents.

Totally agree with you with the rarity side of things. Given the sheer number of players ive encountered, gamed with and faught, it's like just fighting a pirate of one of 4 flavours. It would be fantastic to come across a guy and be all like "Woah whered you get THAT?!"

Variety is important when gear does not matter. We need more reasons to explore and kill rather than more gold. What limited stuff we have available at the moment will soon become mundane without proper variety.

  • If only they were adding in all sorts of weekly events and unique encounters.

With unique cosmetics tied to those events as stated in the future plans video no less

  • that's coming in May. be patient please. they haven't even done their first public event.

  • @eam-samaraka
They have done this with the Day 1 Patch; it is no longer available. So there is hope they may do things like that again...

  • @little-squash the day 1 patch was purchaseable longer then one day and i think it aint enough.

  • @cwarrick66 they said events are coming in may, they also said that things that events eventually will be permanent if you listen to everything.

nothing has been said about things becoming hard to get.

  • @eam-samaraka said in this game needs a sense of rarity.:

it is not every day you get ripped off is it?

  • There's already the black dog set and the day one patch. I've heard the controller is hard to find as well.

  • @rk1-turbulence i wouldnt count items and outfits you can buy on ebay for money an essential feature or rare items.

nearly everybody has these btw, less the controller ones but i kept seeing them over and over too.

  • I totally agree with this post. I have lost all motivation to buy any of the custom sails now. It was like my p**p - hot for about 5 seconds, but now everyone has them, so it's not even a thing anymore. I'll just be a sleeper/dark horse in the game by rocking the original skins for everything and leave my lights on too. Then when someone comes to grief me they can get rekt.

  • @eam-samaraka I'll have to double check but I could have sworn they said events will have exclusive items as rewards.

  • Oh come on.
I have an eyepatch with a big red "1" emblazoned on it.

But then many people would probably think that makes me a sucker.

  • @personalc0ffee wait what 100?
    I got mine at 75.

Edit: that was with shipping in EU.

  • @eam-samaraka The game was just released, of course the limited pre-order and day one items are common now...

  • @personalc0ffee Amazon. Wonderful place, you should google it.

Unfortunalely, adding a few cosmetics for each event is going to make things even worse regarding this matter. Let's say there is a new event with a new sail to get ok ? Most people will get it and use it, so, most people will have the same sail skin. Next event, another one, same scenario, most people will switch to the new one, etc.

It doesn't change anything regarding the rarity of a cosmetic piece.

  • I agree to a certain extent, but Rare needs to figure out a unique way to handle it.

In too many games, "rarity" is just a function of a random number generator. Which encourages the whole slot machine gambling logic and grinding.

I think the best way to handle rarity might be to tie it to the weekly events. Although, honestly I'm not convinced that's the best way to handle it either, because it prevents people who might not be available on a given week from getting the items that they want.

Quite honestly, I'm just a fan of the old-school video game design that rarity should be related to difficulty. Want a super rare item, well you have to go on a super hard voyage and beat a super difficult enemy. None of this artificial c**p that encourages unhealthy habits and streamers dedicating endless hours to monotonous grinding.

  • Something like this would make the grind to legend a little more satisfying. Like in Destiny, you get random drops that could give you a new sweet gun from certain missions. Maybe here with SoT, skeleton quests have a chance to drop cosmetic items for a certain Order of Souls outfit or something along those lines.

  • The idea reminds me of the days of EQ.
Oh the hours spent camping Chardok for my bard to get Vocal Chords.
An item that did nothing but let you speak through your pet, or charmed npc.
But, the fun of having a guard, a gnoll, or whatnot walk up to a player and say things to them and they are like WHAT IS GOING ON??? in ooc.
Or turning into a werewolf with my lute and then charming a werewolf npc and having a little roleplay fun..

I am for rare things that you feel lucky finding, spending hours digging randomly to find something, or killing the same skeleton fort crew or whatnot.
While completionists hate it, they already would have troubles with all the "special" gear from preorders, item purchases, and xbox live subscriptions.

  • @eam-samaraka I agree. I have the same problem with most multiplayer games. Something isn't cool or prestigious if every other person is running around with it, either because they bought a micro-transaction or just grinded xyz. Needs lots and lots of 'stuff' with varying levels of rarity. If skeletons dropped loot or you could actually open chests that could help.

Honestly, given the importance of cosmetics in SoT, there should be a metric tons of cosmetics (there should have been a metric ton since launch already but eh), each achievement should unlock cosmetics, you should get new ones through special voyages or NPCs, when confronting the kraken, some hidden in the world, everywhere honestly. Today, most people i encounter just wear the red jacket because it's the better looking, or blackdog/ferryman set.

  • @RK1-Turbulence

Yeah but all those sets (black dog, mercenary and ferryman) just show that, that person paid for them, it doesn't show they took part in a certain event or anything in game.

  • @fenrirsfury i still think the first 1000 legends should get a recolor of their set or something.

  • Just playing around until SOT 1 day becomes a full game. Shame they didnt make better use of the development time but hey this is where we are at.

Maybe gathering crafting materials to make themed cosmetics?

  • @Eam-Samaraka

I completely agree, a blood red pirate legend outfit would be awesome.

  • @fenrirsfury i wish it was royal blue instead of that purple.

  • Agree 100%. I love the idea of limited edition items.

I even like it on the extreme. Maybe have a secret message randomly in the world. Maybe only 50 of them. This turns into a voyage, which ends with a cosmetic reward. Once the first 50 ppl get the secret message, thats it. No more. Never again will you be able to get the cosmetic. That is a TRUE pirate legend.

  • @blind-boy-grunt i remember the old mmos where people showed off really rare items and you knew that only 2 guys on all servers had this.

i think if the game is all about cosmetics they need these things.

  • Because some people have ground to max rewards in fewer than 30 days doesn't mean there is something wrong with the game. This is subset of a subset of the game population - designing to it is a mistake. The rewards being talked about here as "common" are completely foreign to the vast majority of players.

they have actually mentioned many times that these events will have unique rewards only earnable during that timeframe. they may not be hard to acquire, per se, but having them be limited stock so to speak, makes them rare imo.
