Stealing Maps

  • Now I know that griefing in the game is already feared with people able to steal a chest from you that you worked h*****n and all. But an idea I had would be people boarding would be able to pick up the quest on the captains quarters table that is active and run away with it.
    I feel like this would be mainly really cool to see when a low reputation player is able to take a voyage from a really high reputation players ship. Now I don't really know how this would affect the person doing this quest, would it just end the quest totally for that player or pause it and they would have to resume it going to an outpost, I don't know ( I don't think it should take away the current map, so if your already on the last chapter it should actually be only a neutral gain). I would love to know some thoughts, I know that in the beta there was already people being super aggressive and trigger happy to steal chests and it would be frustrating but I feel like it would be an interesting concept to add to a pirate game.

  • Honestly this is no different than just taking the chest someone has gotten from said voyage. So I don't really see a point in allowing people to steal maps when they can already steal your treasure.

  • I really like this idea! I think this fit perfectly in the game. If the difference of difficulty of the stolen quest is a problem, it can be easily solve :

    • 1.: The quest is unreadable, and kept in the player inventory until he have the level to do the quest, OR;
    • 2.: The quest cannot be taken by the player, but he can sell it at outpost, OR;
    • 3.: If the current quest that been stole if too high, the quest is automatically replace by a easier quest ( but still a little harder in comparaison of current player level ).
  • Maps are only an inventory item, they can't be manipulated in the game world like a chest or chicken cage.

    Scrolls maybe, but you only see them during the crew voting process, and your not part of the crew.

    Sounds like it promotes griefing, but it is thievery and that's the name of the game.

  • @the-lion-turtle When someone steals the voyage they will be in the first chapter of the quest ( so more chest for the thief) but the quest will have different islands as the spots. Also lets say that the ship you just snuck on to has literally nothing on it, you can at least hope for voyage to steal.

  • I'm glad I found this thread! This was an idea that my crew and I thought up and imagined the impact it could have on gameplay.

    for one, there is never a clear way to tell that a ship in transit is even on a voyage at the moment you encounter them. The gamble of contemplating whether or not to engage or attempt to board wouldn't have changed.

    Our first thought was to make a map drop on death. But that's pretty OP right? Seems too easy to compromise the map as an item. So the thought quickly evolved to one that would make the captains desk the place to steal ONE map/riddle/contract at the cost of an extended pick up time. In order for that to be possible, the host ship can't be sunk, the crew dead or preoccupied, and a mostly clean getaway.

    A caveat here is that the original crew still has the stolen portion of the voyage, creating a kind of race to the loot. I imagine this would be indicated by a red border around that item in the radial quest menu.

    to exploit a mechanic like this, it would require tact and clever coordination - a challenge that seems to elude the majority of crews we encounter. As far as PVP goes, I see it as a careful consideration and at least an option aside from the "if it has sails it sinks" approach. And as far as PVE goes, assuming there is some to speak of in the future, it's just another way to acquire quests for the crew that ONLY USES OUTPOSTS TO SELL THE LOOT YARR etc.

  • If actual stealing didn't work codewise, maybe simple duplication act could. As long as they were a member of crew we didn't belong to, any player could copy the scroll on our table to get an almost exact voyage. Same map and same goals, but such level of challenge that is a match to their own competence as a crew and a different schedule.
