After a year or hearing and seeing videos about it I guess I thought it would be a massive world that was deeeeeep. Like a cartoonish pirate version of Star Citizen. Ah man imagine if it woulda been, logging out in your bunk so u log back in where u left off. Huge deliveries that takes a loooong time to do. Ect.
So, what did you THINK/hope s.o.t woulda been like

Let's see, bigger rewards, more rewards, more ships, bigger sea, more quests, storyline, voice over, more cosmetics, cheaper cosmetics, a point or goal to aim for, more factions, more variety in environment, more than one enemy type.
List is long and almost endless due to the stupidity, laziness and idiocy from the developers.
Almost as bad as all these idiots getting all excited about being able to do 5 things in the game or "create your own content" morons.

Initially I expected that the game will go more the mmo route.
Like having a huge map filled with many different crews, many social interactions such as trading, gambling, duels etc.
Having the ability to create alliances where crews can form fleets and go all out war while getting disrupted by perhaps other fleets of players that chose to act as the navy to police the server. Of course with all kinds of rewards for doing this kind of pvp.
I also expected more roles for players to fill out such as being a crew of actual bounty hunters that hunt crews (real players) that have a bounty on their head or being an actual merchant on the sea that other players can visit to trade with.
Well...

I expected it to be pretty much exactly what it is, based on the pre-release information the devs were releasing.
@MrBrocksEgo Pretty much sums it up. But I am still loving the game no matter how much i overshot my expectations.
@mrbrocksego Well no shame in admitting that my expectations got the best of me. I just saw the gigantic potential that this game had and still has.
But to be fair, I had those expactions more than a year ago when I joined the forum. Nobody knew which direction the game is going back then.
I've been waiting for this game since sometime in 2012, it is exactly what I expected and more.
My expectations were that I'd be on a boat, I'd be a pirate, and I'd be able to kill anymore, anywhere and take their stuff.
The additions of voyages, skull forts, sunken ships, gunpowder, & pirate legend are all bonuses to me.How on Earth did people expect there to be a NPC driven story? We are the story!
This game was unfortunately released in a time where players have forgotten how to play self-driven sandbox games and require hand-holding theme-park games.

O I still think it's fun, when I'm with a crew of buddies. But I guess with so many games now that are so deep and vast I thought they were aiming for that too. I still play and will still play. And hope for more.
Why muddy the waters with more content when they are struggling to release their current projected content?
The issue with many modern games is the developers struggle to add in all the "bar" content such as deep stories, iron sights, etc, rather than work on content that makes the game fun, new, and unique.
I'm glad Rare has avoided this issue like it was the plague, making their own unique and fun game.I was expecting emergent gameplay from more than just the PvP. Early trailers made it seem like there would be reasons to delve into cave systems and work together towards finding loot that might have been guarded by mystic guardians. Instead, we got the most basic of basic quest systems tacked on just to drive the PvP. I wouldn't say they delivered on the experience they showed us early on.
@neller2000 to ppl like you i just like to say, what about games like overwatch? Why is it so popular? It didn't have a ton of content at release, not even a ranked mode. Ppl still loved it because the core of the game, the gameplay, was really fun and well polished. Exactly the same with SoT. It's not about "make your own fun" xD Though that's something that imo naturally happens when you have a good time playing with friends (which this game is heavily focused on)...

I play Overwatch. It has far more playability as far as PvP because it's fast paced and instant.
SoT is not in that category. At all. I also enjoy Battlefield 1 still, very long playability. Again, fast paced and instant action PvP.
Overwatch has progression. Level slider that actually moves when you do stuff. You get rewarded, a lot, TONS of cosmetics.
If I had to play 400 rounds of Overwatch to get one cosmetic upgrade, then yeah, that would suck too. But Blizzard knows how to keep you playing, with Overwatch, Diablo 3 and WoW.
How is SoT not in the same category? It's a heavily focused pvp game that relies solely on it's well designed and polished game play to keep players engaged, much like OW, except that there is a competetive mode aswell. A game being "fast paced and instant" is just your own preference.
And you must be kidding about the progression? Do u seriously feel rewarded by the lootboxes? If anything it's a let down like 80% of the time. I'd even say SoT has more progression because you unlock cosmetics, complete the commendations for each faction, get new and better voyages, and at the end there's pirate legend.
Im not saying there's a ton of progression (which wouldn't even work well in a game like sot imo).. But to everyone that complains about it, just look at other similar games, progression is not the problem. If you have a problem with the game it's something else.
I played the scaling test and open beta, watched Twitch content on Youtube and watched Rares videos and streams.
I expected the game to be the beta plus something more.
I expected an evolving progression system - turned out to be more of a randomized grind than I expected. The price of items was raised a lot and xp gain lowered for release.
Had certainly hoped for a more varied voyage-experience.I expected there to be way more in terms of items you could buy for the hard earned money.
I expected an attainable pirate legend endgame with a new ship and new quests - as it turned out the whole endgame is quite underwhelming, it takes a GRIND to reach and it's not even something I am motivated to get. There are other reasons to play, but when the grand endgame is dissappointing then it casts a bit of a shadow on the rest of the game for me.
Overall I think the game is pretty random. Ships will fight you just out of boredom, or because they're just trolling around. All the loot is randomized, I am not saving gold up for anything specific really just as ranking up with the trading companies mostly is an achievemt on paper, like reaching the commendations.
There is a lack of purpose in the game to me.
I had hoped for more direction in the gameplay, like having distinguishable trade ships, more opportunities for interactions with other crews etc.
