Xbox Party Chat issues with inability to unmute?

  • Just wondering if others are experiencing this same issue because it has been plaguing us since Sunday.

Certain players (it appears only those using a PC?) have other xbox friends set as muted but are unable to unmute them. Attempting to click the Unmute action does nothing. No error message, just nothing happens.

I contacted MS support and apparently this is a problem on their party server end. But I havent heard anyone here talking about it.

It is crazy difficult to coordinate when you cant talk to each other. Is this something others are dealing with too right now?

  • Yes it is common. I was muted to a friend and another family member. But not to others.

    A few things to try.

    Hit the unmute 3x fast

Have them unfriend, and then block you, then unblock and refriend.

Use another voice program like discord until it clears up

Microsoft talked to me as well saying it is random, not anything to do with either account, it is just issues that pop up.

The person that had me locked as muted worked fine last night.

  • Thanks for the tip. Will try that.

  • I noticed my son couldn't unmute me. He's on PC I'm on Xbox.
    Rebooted xbox. Was fine.
It happens when he spam invites me. So I just invite him. All is well.

  • @deadwerds We had 4 people in our party on Sunday night and two of them were having this problem. They were both on xbox, I don't remember how they fixed it. I think they both rebooted their Xboxes from a complete power off.

I tried the first two options here. The second one seemed to have no effect. I have more questions on the first one. First how can you click it three times when its only accessible as a context sensitive menu? The first time you click it the menu closes leaving nothing left to click on the second and third time. Second, somehow it did actually seem to work for one of the friends in question, but did not for the other 2. Thinking maybe this was some kind of fluke where it just worked in general for the first case. To clarify the issue is present mainly on the PC. Where one person playing on the PC has certain friends randomly muted and the Xbox app on windows is what I am referring to with the context menu.

Lastly on Discord: Is that even possible for discord to be used on the xbox? Without going through complicated setups with additional hardware like Astro?

Getting super frustrated with this issue now as it completely ruins what the heart of the fun is with this game. Communicating and working together on a pirate ship.

The mute toggle 3x is on the xbox side, and me on PC was the one muted to the xbox people.
I don't think you can toggle quickly on the pc side using xbox, so yeah, ignore that.

Discord is an app you can get like skype or whatnot. Easy to get and install on both xbox and pc. It's is more like teamspeak than skype, it's a channel/server that you join and anyone in there will be together like the xbox party.

Right I am familiar with Discord on the PC. But I was not aware that there was an xbox app for it. I will investigate that avenue as well. In fact I would much prefer that as discord is far superior sound quality.

  • Also, I have yet to confirm that this works but if you are experiencing issues with being unable to unmute friends on the PC via Windows Xbox app I was able to clear out the apparent muted status of my friends by doing the following

    1. Right click on your user icon above the home and select Sign Out.

    2. Reboot your PC

When I came back all my friends were in unblocked and unmuted state. But I did not have time to actually start up a game of SoT to verify that I could hear everyone.
