The AMD GPU Issue - @DEVS: please acknowledge that this is not fixed!

  • bumping this! playing on cursed settings. its simply lame.
not talking about crossfire. have 2x Radeon R9 390... :/

  • Gigabyte R9 280x. Reporting crashing as well.

    Latest driver.
    Cache Shader off.
    Setting: All Cursed

Other drivers tried. Even windows default.

  • R9 270x. Yep, crashing nonstop. Wife and I both have the same system and we crashed today.. together.. with 8 chests on our boat after looting a ship we destroyed. Of course we lost everything AGAIN. I have put in support tickets that go unanswered for days on end. We just want to play the game with our friends without the constant crashes. :(

  • AMD driver issues, say it ain't so... Lol seriously AMD has a long history of c**p drivers and bad support for software. AMD has had this problem for at least a decade, and it isn't surprising they are the cheaper card manufacturer. They can't afford to invest in properly functional drivers. Heck the Xbox one uses an AMD GPU but avoids this issue because it does not use AMD produced drivers. Want to avoid this in the future, I recommend just avoid AMD.

  • @lord-sphinktus please, refrain from spreading misinformation.
i and my friends are playing sea of thieves on AMD cards with maxed out graphic settings without problems.
RX Vega Liquid, RX 480 and RX 580 with mixed AMD and Intel CPUs.
AMD drivers are way less problematic than nvidia drivers.

  • Most frustrating situation for my group is that my one mate with a slightly older amd card has a crash occur EVERY time he looks at floating barrels whilst on land.
He can do it from water or the ship, but if he stands on land and looks in their direction the game completely freezes.

He submitted a ticket during beta and nothing was done - no reply.

  • @ebola696 obvious fanboy response. AMD has been known for bad drivers, anyone who says otherwise is trying to sell you something(an AMD card perhaps). I have never had a single problem with Nvidia drivers... Never, not in 15years of using nothing but Nvidia cards. I'm glad your drivers are working, no salt there, but don't lie about AMD drivers being anything but hit or miss trash.

  • This is the official solution to AMD's problems supporting UE4. https://answers.unrealengine.com/questions/370852/fix-for-amd-driver-crash.html
Hopefully this will help ungimp AMD systems that aren't working with SoT.

  • No driver crash, the game just force closes randomly for no reason at all. I’ve tried all the tin foil ideas and something’s the devs posted but not avail. I have submitted a ticket 40 hours ago no response and nothing from the devs in the dev update about the crashing. Do they even read the forums?

  • @xpvtx sagte in Freeze over Freeze:

Disable your "Shader Cache" and turn your "Lighting Effects" to "Cursed". It's not the best looking setting but it did resolve the freezing issue for me.

yesterday i played 5 hours without a problem

  • I have the exact same issues

    OS: Windows 10
    GPU: AMD Radeon R9 270x (driver: 18.3.3)
    Original CPU: AMD FX-4350 4.2Ghz (4 Core)
New CPU: AMD FX-6300 3.2Ghz (Six Core)
    RAM: 8GB DDR3

Been bugging me since the beta.

Even replaced CPU for a better 1.

Can be after a couple hours or it can happen a couple of times an hour.

I've got the latest drivers which says in the patch notes "added support for Sea of Thieves"

I've installed MSI Afterburner and set fan speed to 100% constantly so the GPU never gets hot....

    Any suggestions?

  • Ever since the first patch my game has been crashing A LOT.

I used to collect tons of skulls/chests to turn in all at once but my game keeps crashing before I can turn in most my treasure. I have to make a bee line for outposts as soon as I find something. I've lost more treasure to the game crashing than I have to other players.

Even worse tho, when the game crashes, my entire system freezes up a few moments later. I can still hear audio playing if I have music on but the system is frozen and unresponsive.

    cpu: ryzen 1800x
    gpu: vega64
    ram: 16gb ram @3200mhz
    Windows Version 1709 build 16299.334

The last patch has been bad for me, problems with "popping" (things rendering suddenly) problems with lighting and the constant system crashes. It's very frustrating.

  • I too have the same problem.

    Intel Xeon e3-1200
    16 G
    AMD R9-270

Can not play because it crashes inconsistently and I lose any progress. I play at the recommended settings, although the hardware is able to do more. And yes, with the reduced lightening. I've reduced everything to lowest setting @ 1080, still crashing.

I had my first Chest of Sorrow, loaded it on board and it crashed.
Played multi with 3 freinds, crashed 3 times during our ~2 hour session ( the reconnect works! )

My first game through windows apps, I want my money back. This is not a $60.00 release.

  • I'll throw my hat in as well confirming that turning off shader cache and a few things in the Radeon software, along with reducing the lighting, does indeed help. Though it does not solve the issue entirely. But I've only crashed once in three days.

  • I miss the "old days" when I could stack a horde of treasure on my sloop for one big pay day. I'm at the point where I restart the game after every voyage to avoid a crash.

  • Hi, just to report my findings, using Vega 64 crossfire.

Thanks for making crossfire work, thats rare these days, no pun intended!

Anyhow, was crashing with crossfire on after anything from 5 mins to 1 hr of play. But using a single card was ok, until today, now I just crashed after 10 mins of play on single card.

Will set my lighting to common and see if that helps.

Really hope Rare & AMD get this fixed, because this really needs 4k mythical settings to work nicely :)

Thanks again for crossfire, now just get the rest of it fixed please!

    Captn Bully.

  • Bump. Come on...... this is ridiculous

  • Having the same issue. It seems to happen most often after I switch to another program and back.

  • @furbank I've seen things that made it seem like alt-tab affected it as well, but wasn't sure about being able to confirm the correlation.

  • Same problem, it's painful for me, but also for my partners.

I tried a lot of correction but nothing helps.

I had the same thing on PUBG it was solved after a GPU update...

  • @ab-3129 I use the crimson driver version 17.10.3
    Game runs floorless for me.

  • I have actually got to the point where I have had enough. I've done all the updates and all the other things needed to 'fix' this issue but it still persists I paid 50£ for a game that I can't play because I have an AMD graphics card. I have never had this happen to me in any other game in existence Let me guess you want me to buy a graphics card as well so I can spend even more money to grind out the same mission so I can get some ghost uniform.

  • @dustofthedeath I tried that one too. No luck.

  • Excerpt from my Customer Support ticket: "Our Team is aware of this issue and is working on a solution. We hope to resolve this in a future update. Thank you for your patience and support!"

I suppose OP can take this as an acknowledgement of the problem.

  • same problems with freezes & Crashes ! All "issues" test and nothing worked !

    R9 280X 3Go
    i5 3570k 3.8Ghz
    12 Go RAM DDR3

Please Do something ! I'm boring to loose my stuff when I play alone... I'm scared to play alone right now... Lost 6 Skulls and 3 chests just behind the outpost after 2 hours of gaming make me crazy !

  • I fixed all of the performance and crash issues by using the 'AMD Clean uninstall utility' to completely remove the drivers, and then installing the older 17.4.4 drivers. I went from crashing and disappearing water at 900p with all settings on cursed to being able to play smoothly at 1440p with all settings on mythical and the shader cache on. (RX 580 8GB and i5 3570k).

  • Same issue for me, I can go hours without a crash, then all of a sudden I can crash 3 times in the next 20 minutes... Just lost a load of stuff as I was literally docked at an outpost and it decided to just hang, play sound for another 15 seconds then force close.

Didn't even bother giving me a driver error or anything this time (as per usual) and I have tried everything from a clean install all the way through to rolling back drivers...

I won't be buying another AMD card going forwards - Funny thing is like other people, the wife has a worse GPU than I do (it is also AMD) and her runs fine :|

Just makes chilling and sailing around at your own pace rather... unchilling and rage inducing. Guess we are all just screwed for now.

Using an R7 370 with lighting Cursed, Shaders off, etc, etc.

  • Uhg. Why does AMD have such a hard time running games? I bought Wolfenstein and i haven't been able to play more than 30 seconds of it before it crashes. Absolute trash.

  • I remember the Radeon days. Do I miss them? Nah.

  • @jeff-x-hd I tried 17.4.4 today. Just crashed. Too bad. Was really hoping you were on to something. Game was running smooth until it wasn't. On the most recent drivers I get stutters from time to time, sometimes resulting in a crash, sometimes resulting in picking up where it left off 1 or 2 seconds ago.

  • @ab-3129 Did you use the AMD clean uninstall utility before rolling back? From the comments I've read it will not work if you haven't.

  • Still crashing after latest game update....... sigh.

  • my game crashed again then locked up my whole system today while I was literally about to hand in my treasure. I'm at the end of my rope, since the patch the game is getting worse to play for me not better. All these crashes have sucked all the joy out of the game for me. I never had any of these issues in the beta only since the first patch.

  • @jeff-x-hd Yes.
I'm back to 18.3.4 now (was on 18.3.3 for a while as well), which seems to survive the issue more often (stutter; freeze for a second;I think I'm screwed; new frame; new frame? new frame! I'm alive! And after that the game just carries on as if nothing happened). Every now and then it's still a crash for no reason. I am trying to log what I'm doing when it crashes. It usually involves sudden changes:

    • Jumping into water.
    • Walking from inside to outside or the other way around.

    Also, for some reason, sometimes:

    • Turning the wheel as fast as I can.
    • Raising or lowering sails.
