UPDATED: Why Has Rare Not Publicly Committed To Adding More Content Or Given Us Any Kind Of Content Roadmap?

  • Rare has said that there will be DLCs on a quarterly basis. The first DLC will include microtransactions. I believe there will be pets too.

That is all I know for sure. I read this a while back in an interview with someone from Rare. I'm not going to mine my scary a*s browser history to find it again so just use Google.

I appreciate the response. This is exactly why I created this thread, because an AMA answer is too vague and nowhere near as official as an actual announcement. The announcement is a very public commitment.

Not everyone is going to watch an AMA or even know how to find that. They should include that AMA answer in a content announcement that will be seen when players log into the game.

I'm fine with them not giving specifics on what they will release or a firm date. A range is sufficient to calm nerves. "In the next 3-6 months."

You can find the AMA answers on reddit through a quick google search, plus public statements on IGN like the article hallower linked to above. Just takes a little research. Topics like this one accusing them of "not publicly commenting" when they already have aren't helping anything. RARE has been more communicative through the development of this game than most developers.

Sorry, but some AMA answers do not carry anywhere near the same weight as announcements. Otherwise, then why do we even have announcements in the first place?

When the executive producer of the game makes a public statement on an Xbox hosted AMA, that carries a lot of weight.

It carries weight. But it's nowhere near the same as an announcement, or a message that is delivered to players after they log in, like I mentioned.

I understand that if you research, you can find information on Google. But that just proves my point further. I shouldn't have to research and dig around in Reddit AMAs just to find a vague answer to my question.

Put it right on the home page. Put it right when we log into the game. Make a public announcement.

  • There is another post with a Poll that is happening right now, and one of the Rare employees posted that they are keeping an eye on the post to see what the community wants, currently the top 3 options on the post are bigger and more diverse map, more ship variety, and more animals.

@sweetbeard90 Who is "people"? Speak for yourself.

I have ~300 hours in this game and haven't gotten bored of it yet....

Me either! Love every moment of this game. Learning to work a ship ($60), dealing with massive weather systems ($60), always looking over my shoulder when sailing and being paranoid ($60). Dressing up my boat and outfit (alright...$20), Getting treasure back to an outpost while being chased and my heart is racing and succeeding (Priceless).

I already got my money's worth!

I believe you but that does prove my point. The information on content must be dug up and isn't readily available in any kind of official announcement or update or anything else like that. It's buried in AMAs, interviews, and random forum posts.

If the answer to the more content question is yes, then Rare needs to clear everything up and put people's nerves at ease by making an announcement about content.

So far people have answered and given some evidence that content is definitely on the way, but I shouldn't have to create a post to learn this information from other players.

It should be right on the homepage etc.

You're probably a PvP player. I suspect it's the PvE players who are complaining about lack of content. Imagine the game without PvP.... Incredibly boring right?

These aren't people who need more content, these are people who want to play a different game.

  • They are listening to us because they removed the death tax but I feel like there's no communication.

Maybe they are thinking about what to add content-wise to make a roadmap?

Maybe they're discussing what to add to the roadmap as we speak?

  • @casesugar401098 I play a mix of PVE and PVP. Usually, it just depends on what the crew I'm sailing with wants to do. When I'm solo, I avoid PVP and try to make friends.

I agree with you though about it maybe just not being their kind of game. I don't think this game will ever be a "hold your hand and tell you what to do" type of game and that's part of what I love about it. Voyages are for people who need a direction, I just go where the wind takes me!

Sorry bu that's unreasonable to ask most players. Most people are going to just fire up the game and play. Only a tiny percentage of players will ever visit this forum or Reddit or anything else like that.

UPDATE: A producer gave this statement to IGN & I think it is fantastic. Rare please take this statement and announce it also on this forum/website + add it as a message when players start up the game. Don't take chances and hope that people read IGN.

"Sea of Thieves is designed from the ground up to be a game that grows and evolves, and we will release new cosmetic options ongoing as part of that, alongside new mechanics and ways to play. Our focus for launch is on delivering a great initial experience, and as we move beyond launch we will be assessing and reacting to player feedback across all areas of the game. We have worked with our community throughout the development of Sea of Thieves, and that will continue in exactly the same manner beyond launch.”

    Oh my god.

It's something they already said a few times in their official videos on YouTube and in the site News, since months...

What do you need to finally hear it? A big yellow banner on the title screen of the game?!

Whether or not the actual act of checking forums is unreasonable has nothing to do with whether it is reasonable to expect people to actually do it, which is the point I made.

The first event is planned shortly after launch, pets were definitely planned for a little further on. And its barely been a week and people are ready to start a public sacrifice over a developmental roadmap?

Exactly.... It's been ONE WEEK. They are still working on server issues and getting the game stable for the number of people on it before they worry about adding more to the game (and possibly making it more unstable)....

Exactly! I'd love more content and all that stuff as much as anyone, and I would have rather the game launched with zero issues (obviously) but since that didn't happen, I'm more than willing to wait a bit for them to get things sorted out before we start demanding more. Good things come to those who wait.

I would encourage you all to learn more about how our current society functions. A week is an eternity nowadays as people have access to more entertainment than ever before in human history.
Time is of the essence for Rare to make an announcement on content, it is one of the chief complaints about SOT. In a couple weeks, the game could easily lose 50%+ of its population.

There are just too many other options out there and people will move on and never come back.

The banner when you open the game tells you to visit the SoT forums. There is far too much information for them to spam when people are trying to open the game.
I would recommend "following" the Rare Employees on the forums if you want to make your search for information as low-effort as possible.

  • @Sean-Winst0n If you'd actually been paying attention to Dev livestreams and the such, you'd have known that they have publically committed to adding new content, and have confirmed that the first major content update will release in roughly three months.

Said update will include Ship Captaincy, which is a new goal after achieving Pirate Legend status for you to work towards. When you achieve Captain status, you get access to your own personal ship and pirate hideout.

They're also adding Pets, another musical instrument (a drum), and a shouting trumpet for communicating with ships outside of proxy-chat range.

All sounds great but you can leave out the passive aggressiveness(if you'd actually been paying attention), it ruins anyone wanting to take you seriously.

All that information is great but many players simply purchase the game and that's essentially their first interaction with it. It is unreasonable to expect players to follow every bit of lead up content from the devs, especially with a game that's been in development for 4 years.

I think it's perfectly reasonable. I find it unreasonable for people to not do basic research about the game they're purchasing, only to complain about it on the forums later.

  • What strikes me as odd is seeing pictures/videos of cosmetics that were in the game. I played the alpha and beta and witnessed a few things myself. The #bemorepirate trailer shows some of them, but some reason they chose not to put it in the final game for release. That I don't get. Still a dope game though. I hope to see something new as soon as possible. Every ship pretty much looks the same its kinda depressing.

Maybe they're discussing what to add to the roadmap as we speak?

I have a feeling they're floundering for content. The actions theyve taken lately are all signs of a company who've ran out of prominent things to add.

    1. They cut content from alpha/beta.
    2. They've moved later DLC plans to be ahead of schedule (pets was planned for midyear/jul, now its THE NEXT update).
    3. They've increased the grind in reputation to slow down people getting to Pirate Legend (and even then people are nearing 50, I know of one redditor at 50/45/45.)
    4. They're maintaining silence in "official" capacity, not making announcements on their own pages, but as "interview" information or AMAs (to claim distance, no thats an opinion of the staff member).
    5. What announcements we DO get are generally after the fact, babble about the current "fixes" and "Were listening we promise" (which rings hollow when a lot of the supposed fixes this patch should have done, didnt. (ie One Weapon bug)).

These are all signs of a lack of planned content and buying time to implement them. Consider how efficient players are at finding easter eggs when done in concerted effort. There was one game which used a Real life easter egg system and had their "secret" revealed in 4 days. Already Reddit has a log of visited islands, unmarked islands, viable islands and have done a sector by sector search of the Red Border. Its very likely, the "Hidden" hideout, isn't accessible and theyre just insisting it is, to have people run round headless chicken style.

    #Justapoint.

  • @blam320 To be honest after playing the game this past week, me and my firends got worried about the content. I started reading up on post-launch content and the only place I could find that mentioned the 3 month timeline was in this forum and even then rarely. This thread is the first time I have seen a source for that comment and I have been looking for 4 days.

    Google it. It's that simple.

  • @blam320 wonderful idea why did I never think of it ..... What do you think I have been using ? Newpapers ? Internet explorer ?

  • @sausijxzal I know what you're saying. I been wondering if this "Pirate legend" hideout is just a myth. Seems odd they made the grind to get the factions up to 50 so damn difficult. I'm almost to 30 in gold hoarders and its a crawl. These lvl 25 missions most times are producing worthless chests that don't give you much if any XP.

  • @captain-surgee hey If I can have a (pet addon) swearing parrot or a smoking monkey and be able to fish Ill shut up lol no yeah alot of serious issues by the time they fix it skull and bones will be out.

Exactly I shouldn't have to look farther than this very website to find info on new content. The only statement so far about future content is in an IGN article. I can't remember the last time I went on IGN's website before this. Why should I have to go to IGN to get info on new content when they have this beautifully created website right here?

To the people arguing that players aren't properly researching about new content, sorry, but you're just flat out wrong on this one.

Not only that, but you really aren't helping this situation. If your argument is that people just need to research better, then we are doomed because if you've ever done any kind of customer service, you would understand that people doing a bunch of research just isn't going to happen and suggesting that they do, like I said, is a horrible suggestion.

Why Has Rare Not Publicly Committed To Adding More Content

    1. They have. Explicitly. Many times.

Or Given Us Any Kind Of Content Roadmap?

    1. They - publically - said they do not want to release a roadmap because they want reveals to be surprises. Plus an official roadmap makes them beholden to it, and if design approach changes or technical difficulties arise where they need to scrap or change things, it's better to not have a "contract" out there for players to cry about them violating.
  • Probably because they don't have much plans right now and are trying to figure out what the community wants. That or they're prioritizing stabilizing the game and fixing any egregious issues before focusing fullheartedly on new stuff.

  • UPDATE! We've got something close enough to what we need today! Check it out here!

  • @boredburrito87 no, it has been 4 YEARS people are right to get p****d theajor portion of the community is running out of patience.
