So far I have two bottle maps disappear after I logout. One was a riddle and one was a bounty. Both times I didn't have time to start the maps. Are these supposed to disappear when logging out? It doesn't seem to me like this should be happening.

ALL Maps go away when you log out.
@debawvballs Any voyages in progress reset upon log out. This not only includes voted on missions, but also missions picked up or added during the course of gameplay. So extended voyages, message in a bottle, etc.
@debawvballs I could see where that might be frustrating, it feels like a fairly minor loss given the cost of starting a new quest feels rather inconsequential though.
@odst-general On the surface, yeah, I agree. However, the bottle voyages are a great challenge for groups and individuals. I mean, the first one I did was against shadow skeletons and gold skeletons. Skeletons made of BOOTY!!

Still, nothing stops you from doing them before you log out.

@solemagician506 Well F*S.. Maybe it makes sense in today's technological future of tomorrow we live in today persistence should be a given. Not all of us have time to do a long voyage right when we get it.

Yes. It prevents people from combat logging. It's quite common.
If you could log off when someone was attacking you, then log back on 5 minutes later and still have all your maps, people would do it all the time to avoid PvP. However, with the current situation, if you log off to avoid combat, you lose everything.
Sometimes you need to see the bigger picture for the smaller things to make sense :)

See my reason given above. It's intentional that you lose everything after logging out, and, if you read the reason, you'll understand why it makes total sense.
