Spent about 2 hours earlier digging up treasure with my buddy, he had to leave and some random replaced him. Within 30 seconds he had shot some gunpowder we had gathered and killed us both, sinking the ship and all 2500 gold in goods.... other than that its just constant running from people looking to sink your ship, I get this is a pvp game but this games going to sink faster than my ship if this is the culture the people who play this game are going to adopt.
Why is this community so terrible?
Ahoy @BDCMatt ;'D
I wouldn't say "community" but certain "players/pirates". Last night, we were trolled by a player who actually said (paraphrasing really but anyhoo), "Kinda sad that you forum people got all your loot stolen by one dude, right?"
Apparently, there's a clear distinction of who makes the forums a community and who makes a game not-so-nice-to-have-some-good-old-fashion-fun-in. Though albeit, he could have been referring that music, george, and i might be "known" among the forums, but a SOT player does not a community member make.
We have a good community. ...it's just that we have a LOT of questionable in-laws due to the marriage of Game+ALL-The-Wins10/Xbox-Gaming-Public. After a few months and the game launchiness has settled, The Community's/Forums' true colours will come out. We've worked hard to keep the heart of RARE pure since the Summer of 2016. And we'll STILL have to work hard in doing so.
I'm sorry that your first experience with a SOT pirate was malicious and unsportsmanlike, but you'll soon find out that GAME and FORUM (where the true community lives) are two totally different things.
Stay strong, matie. We'll have justice R')

Actually .. Its not a pvp game .. Look what the developers say. This is a PVE game with PVP added to it. The first thing is to go out and play together . get gold and so on. And then there is the added danger of random encounters. Thats how the game is meant .. but people dont play that way , like the people that are not nice to you . Everyone else claiming something else is just doing that to troll / flame you or has no idea what this game was meant to be and dont care really .

@captnjaq you pretty much said everything I wanted to say. You can even have someone be a miscreant on one occasion and be really nice on another. I'm always up for a drink and a laugh after I've killed someone or been killed by someone.
i can vouche for that lol
ye clean up nicely, bull ;')@bdcmatt said in Why is this community so terrible?:
constant running from people looking to sink your shipIt's called pirates. They want your loot. Just sail away from them. Me and my mate had to circle 4 different outposts while taking turns handing in chests since we were followed by a sloop.
That's the pirates life.
@landbooster15 a fun tactic if you've got less treasure than crew members is to aim the ship so that it sails past an outpost and into open water, have everyone grab a piece of treasure or whatever, and everyone jump off and hurry to the NPCs that buy them, then run to the merman to get back on the ship.

in a contested area i do this even with more treasure i then just loop back and go past again.
@lumpaywk yeah and always start with the highest-paying treasure and work your way down. That way if you lose some of it, you got the most gold out of it
@bdcmatt I think there should be an option to close slots on a game, for example once your buddy left, you could tell the game not to pair anyone else and keep soloing. Or in a galleon if you are 3 friends playing to close the extra slot and keep all 3 playing. (also to open them too) it would remove this matter instantly.

:) If your looking for people who aren't out to be barstools, check out the topic m8!
@bdcmatt I understand people are against solo and private options for servers saying how it will fracture the player base ETC..... Elite Dangerous has the private/solo/open style and it works just fine. some days I don't mind the thrill of the chase and some days i want to relax with my brother, put in 2 hours and actually make some progress, not show up to outposts camped by pirates who chase the first ship that shows up at said outpost. I really like this game and want to invest into it, but if over half the time invested is making other pirates money then I'm not sure I'll last. Right now people are just too eager to kill other players and it just ruins it.
I've read 2 or 3 stories of fathers playing with their young children only to be chased and killed by some more experienced gamers. it's a shame because this game has a lot of potential.
“Community” is referring to all. You should use the term “players” like the first poster said. If anything, I would have nabbed your loot, made you walked the plank onto a hungry shark, sunk your ship, and after having a quick laugh, a sip of my ale with my mates, sell your loot and share the earnings amongs my crew.
I've had 1 encounter in my 100 hours of play where the other players didn't immediately shoot at me and try to kill me, even when no loot was involved. I'll admit the one time I made friends it was a blast. Right now however, the ratio is waaaaayyy off. Gaming culture in general has just gone downhill over recent years.
I saw a Galleon roll into an outpost last night, sat on the dock waiting to make some friends, dude hops off the boat, strolls up to me, stands for a few seconds then shotguns me in the back.
@captnjaq I appreciate your input and I hope I see a change soon but that was not my first encounter, or my last.....
I also do many things other pointed out in this post such as drive by drop offs and what not. still, if the majority of my time playing this game ends in frustration, my attrition won't last sadly.
@bdcmatt ok ya im not sure either how they are set up. Im in the central timezone in canada. And im not saying i dont get attcked but it seems like some if not alot of people are having that issue. I was wondering maybe if people in europe area are having a bigger issue or not. I was just curious.

Can only agree with CaptnJaq and DrBullhammer, Let the dust settle abit and you'll experience what the community truly has to offer!
I had my best gaming memories in the alpha.
Had blast in alpha and pioneer sessions as well but I mostly just crew up with fellow pioneers since launch. I've had just about as good a time since launch sailing with them as I did in alpha/beta. I don't think anything other than more pioneer sessions will ever be up to that standard, though!
We have made a Discord group that is Pioneers only. If any pioneer wants into it, shoot me a message on Xbox and I'll shoot you an invite.
@too-much-space I would assume Europeans would be more sophisticated gamers, at least that was my experience in Elite: Dangerous....

The community isn't as bad as it might seem. I ended up becoming friends with a guy simply because of a cease-fire. I was running a sloop solo, had 3 people in a row attack me on the water which led to a 30-40 minute cannon battle. Then he sails up, and for some reason, instead of laying into him like the last 3, i decided not to fire... and instead I just dropped anchor and played music, lol. Then he yells into the mic, "hey, wanna party up?" That led to getting into a nice club and we've made about 50k in a few hours and getting connected with a few others to make a solid team.
On the other hand, we also rejoined a server with one less person, and ended up being paired with a guy running a galleon by himself that apparently had 3 team members leave. The ship beat to hell and was all boarded up, no treasure and he was afk. What do we instantly do? Simultaneously pull the sails, ran it aground on a cay, dropped anchor, then all stood on the deck and played the Hurdy-gurdy.
Truth is, we're all a bunch of a******s. But not all the time ;)
Yup.
Bought the game for full price uk for my kids who love pirates.
after playing the beta and stress tests and we havent been left alone once yet to hunt treasure or cute animals an option to do it private group Would solve that.
And as for the you shouldn't get rewarded in private server posts its a nonsense.
Its all cosmetic so would change nothing for anyone except give access to the content in game we paid for.
You know with real cash.
In a group with my mates its the same.
Spend all time fighting muppets for no reason most of time.
Its a shame.
Game is awesome. It is a pirates life, but I agree with most of the content vocalised here, it's become very hard (within a week!) to actually meet players because (almost) everyone (or at least all the ex CoD/GTA players) is just after everyone's loot or a fight. Because you know, why not ruin someone's play session eh? Crews being forced to jump servers after being sunk is a good idea, having experienced a similar situation where a crew me and mine had sunk twice, just kept coming back having respawned at the nearest outpost, and eventually just forcing us out as we ran out of supplies to continue the fight. PvP shouldn't be a bad thing, it's not, but it can be done with a fun and friendly attitude, not the super aggressive "git gud" ethos that seems to be developing in all games that have the same play elements (I'm turning me eyeglass on you Elite:Dangerous, you vicious mistress)
Hope to meet some pirates of a friendly nature, and even if we do end up exchanging some lead over the waves, come and have a drink after, eh?!
Til then, avast!
This was predictable… I keep saying it will since the beta !
Toxic community is like people in real life but at a faraway worst degree…No rules, no safe zones, everyone can do how and when he wants… So not surprise here…
The entire game will sink if there are no changes…
Rare think every member of the community is an angel with good mentality, but Rare live in Carebears world !
Community is wonderfull ? Sea by yourself !Put a gun in everyone hands, and set no rules, prepare for a nightmare !
Peoples will still harass peoples if they can afford it !What do you think ? Your so perfect made world is out of the real world ? Welcome on the internet !
I’m disappointed a lot with this game…
And that will make laugh many of those players ! I know !So do something now or look for the community destroying your precious little game…
😊

Sorry but you missed something
You don’t even know anything about piracy it seems
And no loot for free sinking at the outpost etc…
