Do you feel disheartened? We want to help.

  • Poor poor RARE.
You've put in so many hours, days even years of work to make this experience of a game and yet all i see now are countless posts of how much people dislike many of the features.
I personally doubt the death cost will go down favorably either.

People feel let down by their purchase and have akin RARE to producing the next no mans sky.

Here is the kicker however, RARE never promised anything grand, in fact they showed and promised very little. As such they have kept their word. The sad blame point is the community who pushed this hype train into overdrive and now feel derailed.

To conclude, what I'd like is that IF you are someone who feels let down, please CALMLY explain what has bothered you and why.

As for the rest of you please POLITELY respond with ways this could be changed or adapted.

  • Love the game , i think its wonderful.
Its just that its very popular right now and on the internets children and idiots are often times the ones that scream the loudest.

  • The game would be good if anything actually worked

  • @laughsmaniacaly I don't know what you wish to gain by this post. But I agree with the fact that they didn't promise anything. They just didn't say anything either. They ignored every question they didn't want to answer.

The game has many issue's, and they just ignored all of them. Do you expect people to be happy about that? There will always be two sides to an argument, but if you're unwilling to seek a middle ground then you'll get one very unhappy side.

Wanting to be able to customize my pirate as I see fit, like any role playing game type would allow, doesn't make me a child or an idiot. What's idiotic is forcing people to choose from randomly generated characters in 2018.

  • @laughsmaniacaly Well, "the Beta is not even the 20% of the final game" was a bad way to keep it low.

And all of those comments saying "they will make more content, it's been just 2 days, give them time" are just people saying "yes, we know it lacks content, but I really really hope Rare doesn't make me regret having payed 70$".

I was one of the Alpha Pioneer players, and I really believed Alphas and Betas were just a glance of what the game would be on release. Man I was wrong.

  • I think the servers will run better when the 14 day game pass is over. This game has a lot of faults, but it also has some of the best mechanics for a sailing game. An awesome combination of realism and fantasy.

and heres the problem, alot of ppl see alot of posts of how much ppl dislike it. it seems the majority of players right? WRONG! its a loud group of ppl who maybe even rightfully complaining, yet its not that many but rather a small % of the total player base. the rest isnt complaining on anything nor are they posting anything good cause they are simply enjoying the game. a community is not just the ones that enjoy using the forums. usually its quite the opposite. this game is fine for me, and just because some ppl are making really a f**z about how bad this game is doesnt really change anything. its just the noise one has to cut through or totally ignore

  • @laughsmaniacaly To be fair people have every right to be p****d off, they paid money for this game its not like its free to play (I know gamepass lets you play for free for 15 days but thats only 2 weeks then you gotta pay for a SUB), I personally have no trouble waiting for a fix for the severs as ive been waiting years for this game, I think what really has the community mad is the fact that the game worked 10X better during stress tests and betas than it does in the completed form. Nowadays tho you cant expect much from game company's during the launch of games as they always seem to screw up their game launches. (Same stuff happened during the GTA5 launch). The fact that the game doesnt work well right off the bat really p****s me off because i feel players are gunna be turned off from that experience and wont wanna play when its fixed which could potentially depopulate the servers and make the lifeline of the game so much shorter, I want the game to succeed but I also realize this is a bad look for any game developer and i hope people dont get turned away from this mishap.

  • @edgar-tweedle same tho, I think it is one of my favorites. :D

  • Wow that was popular fast, 10 posts in just the time for me to commute to work.

The aim here is not just technical issues but peoples game experiences, many posts (mayby not many people but definitely alot of post) are upset at what they got.

In short I'm looking for RCA (root cause analysis) to people's issues. What are the driving issues of peoples dislike and then what could be done to amend those issues.

  • @laughsmaniacaly
Sea of Thieves creates a fantastic sandbox to play in but the main concepts constituting the player interaction with the world and other players is off in my opinion.

Risk/reward and death is critized in regards to the PvP element (respawn too close with a fully stocked fresh ship etc.). Survival in this game is secondary. In some situations you might prefer to just die in order to respawn on your ship.

Progression and economy is an absolute core concept in the gameworld. In the games' own logic you might go out to "have fun", but the underlying motivation will allways be the accumulation of wealth in order to accomplish what the game has set up to be accomplished (decoration here).
Thus I am absolutely baffled to see how little content is available in the shops (colour variations of decorations costs tens of hours of gameplay to acquire) and how there is nothing else to spend your money on (like being able to buy animal cages, cannonballs, even decorations that only last for the session or a limited time period).
The price for buying new voyages is so low that it doesn't have any impact on the overall economy - 'clothes, sails and guns' is where 95% of the income is spent :)

Cooperation is limited. I've stood there next to friendly people wanting to ask them to do something together, but nothing really (besides the skelly forts) makes for a meaningful cooperatve journey or interaction. Having a player-based trading system, -bounty system or having the ability to share a single voyage with another crew for shared rewards creates basis for meaningful interaction.

Quests are repetitive, island exploration is not really intriguing (locations in themselves are, but there is nothing extraordinary there to find). Exploration is tied to exploring things on already mapped islands and thus there MUST be new things to find on them. Loads of possibilities there.

My concluding point is, that for a sandbox world to come alive it must contain intrinsic meaning. All of the things that create meaningful interaction with a game world are really shallow in Sea of Thieves - lore, faction (inter)play, survival, character development, economy - these concepts are in the game, but none of them are developed.

That was my criticism. On the other hand I highly enjoy the in-group cooperation, the sea battles and the level playing field, the sandbox itself, the atmosphere.

  • I do enjoy the game, I just hope for a few minor gripes to be fixed.

PvP is perfectly amazing, but spawn-camping needs to be addressed if it hasn't already. I'm all for having my ship sieged and my booty taken, but to have people just camping my spawn for 20 minutes without taking or doing anything just to be jerks and make it so I can't play is a bit silly. Yes, "scuttling" is an option, but the fact remains they're not doing it to take my loot, which I'd be happy with, they're only doing it to troll, which seems mildly abusive of a mechanic.

Random brigging of players for just having the misfortune of matchmaking needs to be addressed too...Shouldn't have to matchmake for 25 minutes over a series of dozens of games just to find a crew that won't instantly throw you in the brig for spawning.

I'd love to see more weapon types. Nothing "stat" based, but different types of melee and ranged weapons would be nice, add a variety of playstyles and counters. Ships too I suppose, but I'm still getting to grips with the one I play in.

  • @bloodywhalecack Well you mentioned GTA, probably one of the most disastrous multiplayer launches on console, it took a month to be fully working and in that time people couldnt play or were losing progress. Yet look at it now, incredibly popular and has the same service style as SoT with regular updates.

The dev update video showed that they couldnt have been prepared for the sheer amount of numbers hitting the servers. At peak there was 5000 new players per MINUTE trying to get online, that is insane and that is ontop of the people who were already on playing. Sure the launch has sucked for consistency and getting access but its crossplay, that is one huge market being covered. Sure there was preorders and current gamepass holder numbers to work from but there was no possible way for accounting all the off the shelf copies and new gamepass players that came too. Like all AAA launches, its had its launch issues and theyre being resolved.

  • @d-cadovius

This is what i want to see,
A fair evaluation of issues both posative and negative with the focus on what specifically was the problem point for you.
Now for the hard bit, what would you do differently to adapt the current experience to combat those specific issues. Granted some have been explained already.

    Thanks for these posts guys

  • I like the way , how rare and microsoft scammed us all with saying 20% of the game was final beta and now there is almost 0 content added.

Atleast they got alot of money out of this scam.

Good Job Microsoft & Rare very fascinating

  • @qm-ginger-beard I watched this. All lies. It's been 48hrs for me and I still have not received my gold. This que system must be a maelstrom. And now 12 hrs since I last played due to server issues.

  • @agirl-with-guns I get where you coming from. Personally I really like the randomized system they have.

maybe all the good stuff is behind the pirate legend!

  • I don't see how people are moaning about encountering people me and my m8 were on we did not see any one in like an hour and a half I want more contact that's what make it fun after all

  • @tuukkatl
i hope it is , i think i speak for alot of people that we expected such a good game, the final beta was awesome and it is a game with so much potential. But the lack of content at this moment. so sad to see.. , and i've got to agree the free pass is not helping because alot of trolls are sailing at the sea at this time.

I hope they will update soon and that this is a kind of april fool joke..

  • @reavergaming if you think that is the issue wait 2 weeks till the free trial ends then the players that want to pay 55 pounds will play it properly

  • @es-x-ginge
Mwa the trolls are not the problem. and eventually the trolling will get boring and they will leave.
the lack of content is, there are some things u can do but there is not really an end goal to work towards, they just need to add an economy/clans/more ships and they have an decent start, in my opinion.

  • @laughsmaniacaly hi sir I am new to game started on the day of release and did not play the beta trials, so know little about what is going on but would like to learn from someone that has experience. I am an older man, 70 and a little slow to catch on to somethings, so if some one has time and patience, would like to learn the game better, respectfully jutland1947.

  • @laughsmaniacaly being able to play the game would be a start point for me :-/

  • @darkdestroyer82 I had the gold issue as well. All I needed to do was exit the game, restart, and go back in. All the gold was now there as well as the loot. Hopefully the server issues are sorted today during maintenance

  • I very much enjoy the game, however peoples' criticisms are perfectly valid.

Rare themselves stated that the beta was only about 20% of the planned content for launch, but it doesn't feel like they've actually added anything substantial to the game. The only thing added since the beta is the Order of Souls, Cursed Forts and the Kraken.

They also frequently stated throughout their dev talk videos that "so much is in store for launch that we think people will enjoy."

    Well where is it then?

    My personal issues:

    • The company quests are all very repetitive fetch quests. Go to X, bring back Y, repeat for reputation and gold. While player intervention adds a tinge of excitment, the questing gets old fast.

    • The cursed forts are far too easy as they are now and essentially make the company quests meaningless. My friends and I can clear them in about 15 minutes and we get between 15,000 - 17,000 gold along with a significant amount of reputation. That is significantly more than the 1000 gold we might get for sailing around islands for 30 - 45 minutes for the companies.

    • The Kraken is not nearly the threat it was made out to be and it's not even actually there. The fact that there's no body is kind of ridiculous. Why can't I risk the waters and try to shoot it in the eye?

    • The world simply feels empty. While I greatly enjoy the PvP encounters, the severe lack of PvE content makes the world feel dead and empty. I lack anything to do with my time other than just hit the company grind and battle whoever comes my way. That doesn't hold much longevity for me.

    • The death fee is a very bad move in my opinion. I explained it in a lot of detail as to why in another thread, but to summarize; The time it takes and the difficulty of acquiring gold is already fairly high due to player intervention, adding the death fee and further punishing players only makes it even harder to earn gold. It's essentially a cheap method to add longevity to the current content and should not be implemented in the games current state.

While I very much enjoy Sea of Thieves, they desparately need to grow this world they've built. They made quite a few claims, such as needing multiple ships to take down the kraken, and they have just proven to not be true.

I love the Idea of an unexplored Map und you have to discover all Islands by yourself. This makes finding treasures harder because you have to discover the Island in the first place. That simple thing would add so much more progression to the game!

  • @laughsmaniacaly I love the game. Just need to say that first. Put in around 20 hours so far and have made some slow progress. I love the addition of messages in bottles and crashed ships and loot washing up on the shore as this adds so much more to the game. That being said however, the game feels unfinished and not worthy of the £50 price tag I had to pay to get access.

There is a severe lack of content in the game. It is basically the same as the alpha back in December, but with 1 more faction to work for. That's it. It's so incredibly disappointing, especially when there is so much potential for this game. It just reeks of missed opportunity and that's why I'm disappointed. I know that this is mainly due to my over active imagination, but when it comes down to it, if I can think of loads of ways to improve the game, some of which would be easy to implement, it amazes me that a game developer/designer would not think of them.

  • My biggest complaint is the server delay for rewards and achievements, which I understand have been explained for the time being (although I would appreciate client-side achievement tracking). My overall perspective is that we are pirates, and I’m willing to give the game a little time and effort because you never hear about the regular pirates, you only ever hear about the infamous and legendary pirates. If we have any legends out there, they are few and far between at this point. I’m willing to wager that there will be more to do once I reach that point, and I’m personally willing to invest to reach legendary status.

  • I wanted this game to be great. I fought my friends about how awesome it was going to be and how amazing the Alpha and Beta was (been playing for over 6 months).

Game comes out and I feel like it should still be in "Early Access" release.

I will say, yes, I have fun playing it, but it is nothing more than a filler game until another game comes out (Far Cry, most likely) and takes away attention.

I also have no problem with Griefing or the PVP or Outposts. I get the point of the game and will not use that in my points below.

Here is why I give this game a 4/10 and am open to let it improve over time, but currently don't hold the game in high regards:

    • Combat is clunky
Both on land and on ship, combat is weak. Sword combat is a button press/click, that really has no special trick to it. I constantly run out of stamina and by pirate freezes and takes unnecessary hits. Sometimes the game doesn't register changing to a gun or banana and I die due to server lag, where Skelies have perfect aim even from a distance.
Ship combat is no better. I hit 20 cannon balls on a galleon while in my own solo sloop, but there was never a threat for either of us to sink, given the insane amount of cannon balls that hit and the simplicity of 1 board patching 1 hole on the ship. Let me take down pieces of the ship. Or at least get rid of these silly pre-determined holes in the ship. Let me blow a hole anywhere in the ship, not just where you decide the hole should go. Let me take down areas I know are harder for them to reach. Instead, each ship can only take 8 holes of damage per floor, and there is no way to blow more than 1 hole at a time during sloop combat. You have better luck hoping the other ship crashes during the fight.

    • A lot of progression grind for seemingly no reward
Have you checked what you can buy for gold? I played for about 8 hours and saved only 26k gold. My faction rep is 12/18/13 for gold/souls/merchant. I have higher level missions and still get lowest level chests/skulls/rewards. Kind of insane, honestly. And the kicker? Somebody try to tell me the difference between the first Bilge Rat ship mast (70k gold) and the second one (140k gold). Why am I grinding for nothing? Why is the level 44 gold hoarders unlock the same as the free one, but a slight tinge of gold in the feather? I don't find the rewards tempting at all. Cosmetics are cool, but I have no reason to buy anything outside actual things like a peg-leg, haircut, or hook arm. None of it feels worthwhile.

    • No driven story?
Sea of Tease actually did a small section on the mysterious stranger, whom I assume makes you a pirate legend after you max rep, but they Teased actual questlines... which aren't here yet? Again, there is no tutorial or intro (used to it from the alpha/beta), but I mean how does somebody who's never heard of the game get started when you have literally NOTHING telling you what to do. It was comical to watch my father (pretty well-versed gamer) try to figure out how to start and finish a chest hunt quest. He stopped playing after that when he asked, what do I do next? And I said turn it in and get another quest.

    • Lack of options
I don't mind the autogenerated pirates. It is what it is. What I do hate is the lack of things that would actually make me feel like a pirate. There's a total of 6 different hats that you can wear, 6 jackets, etc. Where is my option to get a bandolier and not have to literally fight a skeleton fort near the ammo crate the entire fight (sidebar - I will admit, my best tale so far is fighting the fort as a group of 4 and opening the treasure door for the first time)? Why are there 6 empty wheel slots in my inventory? When will we add more shanties/instruments?

    • Things still don't work and it's been 2 days.
Yes, I know, 2 days. But this game was in Alpha for years and in development for many more before that, so when things like Achievements not popping breaks, that's cause for concern. Server stuff is a trend on these types of games. I've yet to see a game launch without server problems, so those were expected. But Shop inventories not loading? Gold not being granted until I log out and log in? That's really important stuff, if I was going from level 9 to 10 and wanted to buy the new quests. That was ridiculous.

Again, the game has a LOT to improve, and I want to believe they will, but I don't have the confidence anymore to say this will be done anytime soon. So until then, I wish it the best and will play it here and there.. but man, I was expecting something greater.

  • @qm-ginger-beard said in Do you feel disheartened? We want to help.:

@griffster95 I'm not sure whether you watched the latest developer update. If not here you go

They state that the reason that things aren't working as planned and there is delays is because of the amount of people joining which is way more than even the final beta.

For years I've heard the same BS from game companies.

"We didn't expect this many players, the number of players took us by surprise, we love the support but did not expect this many players"

Why not just be the Company to stop the BS Rare.

The perpetual launch day surprise of developers is a joke. But it's not funny.

Game companies will never error on the side that benefit the costumer when preparing servers and band width for release. After a few weeks the load may become less. It is more cost efficient to just ride the storm with s***e service and then let things even out as less players are in the game.

I know it may not be Rare calling thw shots on the setup.

It's a great game. Fun to play and apart from the launch issues, the game works well.

Just quit the BS and admit the real reason behind the non bug related launch issues - profit.

  • I would like to point you to this article, made late 2017, that detailed the mechanics, services, and cosmetics that we were told would be available at launch;
    https://www.digitaltrends.com/gaming/sea-of-thieves-news-rumors-release-date/

  • A big problem was the datamining done by some users as well as interpreting too much into things. People got hyped up on things that might have been leftovers from interal builds to see if a feature works or not that may never see the light of days. And people were so excited that they even checked trailers frame by frame and made assumptions on what may come people started believing those assumptions are facts without checking back if it's been officially announced or not.
I'm not here to try and hide all the current flaws. They shouldn't have happened, especially after 2 betas and 3 scale tests as well as Pioneer sessions, but they happened. Now they take their time to improve and learn. They removed the camera-lock on during cutlass combat and tweaked the respawning according to player's suggestions, so that shows they infact care about what we say and try to give us the experience we want, but that means they have to go through those core issues first and make things run stable in almost all cases before going onto their post-launch plans with more content.

And for the recent patch note about the death fee, we should wait until we have more details on how EXACTLY this works before judging it. As of right now, it doesn't sound like a good idea, especially in the current state, but if it's done right, the idea may not be too bad after all.

Lots of folks need to understand real people work on this game. They sacrifice their time (mostly even overtime) to hopefully fix some nasty issues. And developing and maintaining a game and the services around it isn't just slamming your head onto the keyboard and magically everything works. Reproducable issues are easier to fix than those which occure randomly. All we can do is being patient and make bug reports to help the devs ^^
