Rapid Fire Cannons: Possible Exploit?

  • I had just been playing and got pursued by a single man sloop. As soon as he got a clear shot, the single cannon he used fired around 2 shots per second, landing almost every shot. This happened multiple times during the fight. I would evade and repair, but as soon as the cannons lined up, it sounded like he had a full galleon of cannons firing at me. Is this an exploit, a bug caused by lag, or just straight up hacking?

There are a lot of core systems of this game that are extremely buggy/broken and this just adds to it. Selling items often breaks and requires a relog to actually see your current gold. The human to human combat is laggy and inaccurate. Now, the ship to ship combat feels broken. Is there anything this game actually does well besides looking good?

  • Well I'm a PC user so I simply hold down R to reload. Haven't taken notice that I've been rapid firing, but hey!

  • That’s doable if you try even on xbox

  • Had a galleon that fired without even reloading. They just unloaded on us rapid fire for about 10 seconds and i know it was more than 10 shots per cannon. Luckily their aim was p**p. But this kind of hackery has to be looked into

  • @shockwaveds13
I'm on PC too and I use R as well, but he was getting almost twice as many shots off as I could. It almost sounded like two cannons.

  • Given it's a "Hold" (for a Second) to Reload, it most certainly isn't "Doable" to fire 2 Shot Per Second.

At best you're looking at 2 Shot Per 3 Second, Per Cannon; regardless of what you're using. It's kind of designed that way.
Now if what was happening was a "Hack" or not... who knows.

It's possible it was latency, causing the shot effect to play twice., or it could've been a hack that Loads and Fires all Cannons at once (in which point he was wasting half his ammo)., not sure there is a Hack for Shorter / Disabled Reload Timers.

Though I guess it's possible, still it would be weird that it's not just a constant barrage instead of 2 Per Second.

  • @leyvin
Considering that it was a sloop, there are only two cannons and they are on opposite sides, so there's no way he could have reloaded the one cannon that quickly. Latency might explain it, but the fact that most of them landed in approximately the same area on the ship is fishy.

  • @leyvin
Also, we were circling at the time, so there was only a short window to actually get a hit, so a constant barrage would just be a waste of ammo.

  • @smellytooth ... does sound suspicious.
What would be ideal is if it happens again, use Xbox DVR (Record That) feature... get video evidence that you can throw up on YouTube / Xbox and link it.

  • It's called "experienced cannon marksmanship".
Shooting and reloading a cannon is really fast once you get the tempo. Then you just need to learn how to shoot. Most players blame lag but they often don't take ship's momentum and waves' motion into account.

  • I am on PC and I can do that.

  • @arcangelo87 • Yet it's still limited by the Reload Timer.
As I stated, this timer is approx. 1s Hold. There is also a small delay during the Firing Animation., this results in a total 1.5s between shots at best., resulting in 2 Shot per 3s.

On top of this, you're also entirely correct that you have to account for Wave Motion to ensure consistent Hits; which typically requires leading the shot and timing (depending on what is going on).

An Expert Cannoneer might hit in the same General Area consistently, but rarely the same spot.

  • @leyvin yeah, but what I'm thinking is that there was no hacking. @SmellyTooth probably encountered a veteran player.

its a cheat/trainer, there is like an ("unknown-forum") full of cheats, you may wonder they say this game has zero anti-cheat protection (they mean really, really weak) they have vids and pictures of cheats in action, aimbot, no-reload, and so on its ridicules.
i know every game has them, and not saying "it is a cheater" because many of them shady forums, have "fake" cheat tools. i never download them, just look on "set" forums to see what cheaters use to later better recognize them and report them.
don't ask, the name of set forum (its unknown) you will never find it, so don't try to! and its not worth it either 99% sure all you do is infect your own pc.

  • @arcangelo87
So he must have been soooo experienced that he could speed up the reload time? Reload speed is not a skill. I've played in multiple betas and have had plenty of experience with firing cannons to know how fast they can be fired. What I experienced was not even close.

  • It certainly felt like we encountered someone with some kind of rapid fire cheat, was around 2 shots a second. its reprehensible. They annoyed us for about ten minutes because we were out maneuvering them but it was bloody annoying.

  • Iv just had the same thing happen to me on xbox, me and a friend where just annihilated by another sloop, he was a lone sailer and able to fire is cannon easily twice as fast as ours and sunk us in seconds, i can only assume a pc player using an exploit or hack

  • 1.5 seconds between shots (as you guys keep describing) is not 9 shots every 3 seconds (as you keep describing).

It is two... at least in the maths department. Maybe I am reading something incorrectly here.

  • My fiancee and I were playing and saw a single player on a sloop and thought nothing of it. When we got to the island to collect some chickens for a merchant mission, this lone player started firing two shots from his cannon consistently to my one. There's NO damn way ANY player can do that at all. Luckily, I recorded with my Xbox and am sending it to Rare support. It's sad that I can't enjoy playing a game like this with my fiancee without some punk having to cheat to play because they have no skill or patience.

  • @smellytooth It's VERY easy to time your reloads and spam shots.

It's all about the timing, if you're off the reload will "foul" and you'll have to try again.

  • There is an array of hacks being used in sea of thieves, dont let anyone fool you or tell you otherwise. There are videos available displaying them easily found with a google search. I ran into a player using the aimbot tonight, as well as the reload hack and a speed hack.

They need some damn cheat detection 😀

  • @vartan

Just because you got beat doesn't mean someone was cheating. Show us the video of it happening, or stop lying.

Edit: Yes, of course there are cheats. Every game (MMO's especially) has such problems, and developers work to tackle the issues as they arise. And just because you know of the existence of something does not make you an expert on the matter.

  • @wodyo luckily last night was the first time i encountered an obvious cheater/esp user in sot, i dont think rare wants us posting videos on their forums of cheats in progress which would also include names, so that info will just be reported directly to them/xbox live.

On a side note - its not like sot has counter strike or pubg level pvp, there arent a million ways to die, everyone has the same stats in sot, same health, same cooldowns, etc. its basically roblox level pvp, so yeah it is actually pretty easy to determine when someone is using esp/aimbots/and health or speed exploits. To assume any report must be wrong is naive. Not all reports are accurate but id bet quite a few end up netting a ban. They just need to implement some anti cheat to help out and filter out the bulk of the hacks, hopefully soon.

  • @smellytooth I jumped back online for the first time in a few weeks only to experience a similar issue. Sloop was able to fire cannon balls in quick succession that appeared to be faster than the reload time required.

  • If they are reloading faster than they should it's likely a cheat. So next time get a name of the player and fill a bug report out so that Rare can use the Ban Hammer on them.

    Zeffin

  • The cannon takes like a second to reload, and the barrels with more cannonballs is right next to the cannons. Unless he's firing multiple cannons he's probably just good at the game, especially if he's engaging you.

Honestly, if you have to ask "is this hacking" its probably not. Hacking is super obvious, unless he's 100 yards away hitting 100% of his sniper shots, sailing a boat with a dozen holes but no water, and all other kinds of stuff, its much more likely they're just good at the game. Don't be so quick to pull the hacks excuse.

  • We had a galleon fire 3 shots at the same time at us. Their aim was really bad, so they didn't get us. Seems like some kind of cheat or glitch perhaps. It definitely was not normal.

  • video or it didnt happen.

ive heard everything here, from wallhacks to flying to orbital nukes.

likely they had all 4 people on cannons and you had never seen real coordination before. its common.

  • @lowbei Always possible. I started recording but it was too late. Next time we'll circle back. Didn't want to lose our stuff.

  • I had a thread on this earlier but it was explained how to do it. I even added a video of it in action and the people on the forum told me how its done.

  • @smellytooth Does xbox game bar thingy (That's what it's called on PC I think) allow you to save replays of the last x minutes?

I use shadowplay (Nvidia GPU on PC) for stuff like that and it sounds like it would have been useful for you.

  • @xcalypt0x
oh em gee whenever i hit Win +G it tells me i'm not allowed to record this game (if that's what you mean)

but then again, i'm much happier with the functionality of the third party recording software i was using anyways

  • @hoboprof Oh really? That's interesting. I have used the gamebar before when my shadowplay overlay wasn't working. That's odd.
