Worst game launch I think I've ever seen

  • To be clear I've played 7ish hours so far and love this game. Gameplay is great feels great looks great. But nothing crushes my spirit more than to have progress of 3 hours where I acquired 20 chests and a'll the loot in a skeleton fort not register. I read that if you hard reset and log in again your progress might come back but all this did was take away all my gold. Now I'm a little frightened that this progress will never be regained and if so I hope Rare will take the opportunity to show their fans they care and give us something to repay what people like me have lost. Otherwise I'm gonna let this game simmer for a couple of days and see if anything gets better and I get back any of my stuff :/
Edit- ok I can understand that there might have been worse launches it's just to me this was an actual waste of time if it isn't fixed. Like with online launches some things might be laggy or features might not work correctly but I've never seen a launch where you put progression in and it just disappears . But that's just me

  • Hopefully it all gets figured out. I played for about 4 hrs and most of my treasure was accounted for, about half wasn't. I figured it was like the bug in the Beta but never received gold or rep.

  • A pub opened some years ago. Big deal, a LOT of people showed up. Max capacity was 350 and about 300 people showed. It was rammo. They ran out of beer and cans by 10pm. This was a nightclub in a dense urban area. 10pm. Place hobbled on savings for a year before closing down. Never saw more than 100 people in there after that first night.

Point of my story? They could have stored some extra beer in preparation. I've hear of companies renting extra server space when launching games or at peak periods. For some reason rare was not prepared.

  • Its pretty rough, but at least it wasn't right at midnight last night, and a lot got in and could play and stay in. The Diablo 3 launch was worse I think, the error 37 cause pretty much no one to be able to play for hours right directly at launch.

I would love to know exactly what went wrong, if it was a bug or if scale predictions were too low but its frustrating for sure.

  • Worst game launch? This? It seemed pretty good to me. WoW WoD launch was way-way-way worse. They did well for a multiplayer online game. I guess america had ton to join so it was the hardest for them, but when my group went online (Hungary, beside others) I was in 2mins (!) after midnight making my character. Launch was fine, it differed by each zone how they could manage, making it a rolling launch helped.

I am from australia and the launch went fine, no drop outs or disconnections, got straight into the game with no issues.
been playing for 2 days with no issues now.

keep in mind that when it dropped in NewZealand first hundreds and thousands of US people resorted to VPN's and other means to get the game which would have totally stuffed up the plans for the roll out and caused majoy chaos.

so before blaming rare, blame your fellow impatient pirates who just HAD to have the game when in launched in NZ and overloaded the servers

  • @ismorky You must not have played many games, or have the memory of a goldfish. I've experienced many game launches just as bad if not worse.

So be should blame the customer because Rare didn't have the server power to support the game? You should get a job in customer services lol. This game is still not fixed and that has naff all to do with VPNs and impatient players. It's 4:50am in the UK and I can't log in. But I guess it must be all them people trying to use VPNs go get onto European servers? I am currently in a datacemter as well so can't get better internet this is Rare that messed up! Not Game Pass, not impatient players, not mystic winds! This is a truly great game but it's an utter shambles of a launch with an unfinished game running on servers that can't handle the load.

  • @lumpaywk
Do you understand what a rolling launch is ?
When you have records of X amount of players who bought the game in tiny little newzealand to be the first to play you adjust everything accordingly,

then you get a sudden influx of people from all over the world joining and then those numbers double and then triple it will over load whatver servers they had hosting them.

so whilst trying to keep everyone currently online, the game launches elsewhere and hundreds and thousands more try accessing it which flood even more.

Where did i mention European servers ?
If people were just patient i bet they would have had heaps less issues.

launch went fine for all me and my friends in Australia, waited until 12am clicked play, and have not had an issue since.

Servers were setup to handle a rolling launch, not 80% of the player base joining when it was available in ONLY newzealand at the time.

i dotn seethese shambles you are talking about, i have been playing just fine with no issues logging in (apart from the past 10 hours since i have been at work and have not tried)

  • the release was great until America came along and trippled the in game population😂

Thats the point though this is not just a NZ issue!!! its a global issue. the servers are breaking and it has fudge all to do with players being impatient. Your blaming the customer for wanting to play to much? As I said I am currently sat in a datacenter I didn't get here not knowing how servers and the internet works!

It seems your a lil confused. The game has been launched now globally the issues are still present. Nobody needs to use vpn to play the game in their region now yet the issues are still present.

If there isn't enough servers to support the game it is not the customers fault!

  • @ismorky
You clearly didn't play Red Dead Redemption on release day. Invisible horses, invisible players, nothing in the multiplayer worked for at least 3 days.

Grand Theft Auto online was broken for a whole week. So many people had so many problems with the character creation and game crashes...

It's funny how fast people forget...

This game's minor malfunctions and maladies are a f**t in the Wind.

  • I'm in Europe, and was online 2 minutes after launch in my zone, and have been playing ever since. Was experiencing the missing gold/xp bug, but that was sorted after a quick relog.

Also, in my 20+ years of onlinegaming, I have seen far worse launchdays than this.
Was actually prepared for much more downtime, as this is usuallly the norm when launching these titles, so on that note, I'm quite pleased! :-)

I think this is a great game, and the developer are taking notes and correcting bugs as they come along.
Had 12+ hours of fun and meyhem so far...

    • Arrrr, and a bottle of rum!

Examples of how other games also messed up does not take away from the fact that Rare has messed up. I am sure they will get this fixed but as of now it is not! Just because it will likely get fixed shortly that des not mean its not a legitimate complaint.

  • i lost all my progression from my first play session but got it all back after turning in a new chest.

  • @ismorky really.. worst game launch you've ever seen?! You honestly could've have seen many game launches in your day, because this is much better than what I've seen.

    World of Warcraft
    All Wow expansions
    Diablo 3
    Sim City
Batman: Arkham Knight (so bad they had to actually PULL the PC version)
    ArchAge
    No Mans Sky
    GTA Online
    Battlefield 4
    Halo Master Chief Collection
    (And a lot more)

All of these games were SIGNIFICANTLY worse than SoT launch. People are up and arms about this launch being bad, but these problems are very very mild compared to the launches of many other games.

This is one of the better launches I've seen. Some of the games listed above took WEEKS before they were playable.
And some people think "I didn't get gold for the 2 chests I sold, WORST LAUNCH EVERRR"

Take a moment, chill, take a step back.

Could rare and Microsoft done better, sure. But everything is 20/20 in hindsight.

Not to mention Rare had already made a statement anything you turn in you will get the reward in the time. It might show up as 0 gold now, but you will get it, eventually, so time NOT wasted.

  • @bambam-bm Whew, I still have nightmare about the WoW release. A lot of buggy/broken stuff at first, assuming you could actually get in lol

  • @ismorky i think there is an issue on PC. Xbox friends are currently gaming and having a good old time, PC friends (including myself) are currently having server issues. I LOVE this game, played in BETA and also managed to get about 3 or 4 hours with friends last night at 2am (thinking the servers were dead from people being asleep) and everything about the game is grand, the graphics, the team work needed everything. Glitches come and go like no XP or money for some missions and chests etc but the worse thing is that when i went to upgrade quests the game froze at "counting coins" and then crashed, and haven't been able to get into it since with alebasterbeard issues :(

Don't want to hate on the game or the developers, but if you charge AU$100 i expect the game to be clean and ready for launch, otherwise make it an INDI game and charge $20, that way no1 can be disappointed with anything.

  • @ismorky I had the same problem with my gold. I earned about 30k. Nothing when i logged back in. My friend had an error while installing. Another had disconnects. Don't get me wrong. I love the game. But this launch day was just embarassing and I hope they fix it in the next 2 days or i'll stop playing the game.

  • I had an smooth start in Germany, 0:02 on Tuesday. and no problems to login in yesterday after work. Back in 2004 WoW was terrible to join the servers, even month after launch.

  • I experienced the gold/ XP bug in every play session, which came back the next time I logged on.
Apart from that, I've had no issues logging in and playing so far (maybe got about 5 hours in yesterday), all been fairly smooth.

Obviously not everyone has had the same experience as me, but to call it the worst launch ever...did you not play The Master Chief Collection?! Even if you wanted to now, the GB size of the install tells you all you need to know about the patches they needed to fix that shambles!

  • It registers even if it isn't represented in-game.
There have been far worse launches than this (see Diablo 3, BF4), but that by no means suggests that SoT is running smoothly. The sheer lack of polish is astounding. I'm genuinely beginning to question what the actual purpose of the SoT Insider Program was.

  • @lumpaywk
It's not a legitimate complaint. It's not as if rare is ignoring everyone and just leaving it broken! they're actively working on trying to fix it to make sure that nothing is interrupting everyone's gameplay in fact they even put out a video explaining everything that's happening and what's causing the problem and how they're working to fix it.

  • WoW Draenor.

Hundreds of players standing together completely lagged out when everyone should be instanced to their own garrison. Coulnt play my main for three days.

This launch not even close to the worst launch ever for most experienced gamers.

So that means its all ok then! because they are working on it! Fixing the issue isn't being a good company! It's what as a company you need to do!
If you went to a restaurant and you ordered a steak and chips and they came out with some chips then said. Oh sorry we are working on getting the steak fixed for you before bringing it out half an hour later. This doesn't mean they are great because they are able to eventually bring it out. That is just what has to be done. Esp when in this example the steak and chips is only half the size it was expected to be.

  • Pretty sure GTA can still hold that title, for console at least. people lost chars, many couldnt play for a week or two, it actually took a month to get the game up and running...

Anyway theyve released a dev update on youtube on all what theyre doing to fix the known issues. Like at peak they had 5000 players a MINUTE trying to log on at once...wwaaaaaay past anything the stress tests managed. Itll get fixed :)

  • So many games out there with worse launches.

Sure things aren't so smooth right now but wow, I've seen much, much worse.

  • @lumpaywk
No this is you ordering a steak and chips and menu explains to you what the steak and chips is but you get a wild idea of what you really wanted to be and start making suggestions and then get ticked off when the stake comes out exactly how the menu described it. Then you go around telling everybody it's bad and how they shouldn't be ordering the steak and chips because it didn't meet your expectations.

You see I watched all the videos and read all the articles. This game is exactly how they described it.
So I don't see where you and everyone else is getting your convoluted story about what they promised versus what's being delivered. I think you need to go back and we watch all the videos and reread all the articles; hold back your ideas and your expectations and after you're done with that then you'll realize that the game is exactly what they said it was going to be.

  • @ismorky nothing crushes raises my spirit more than your tears.

  • If you honestly think this is the worst game launch you have ever seen you either havent seen s**t, son, or you havent seen s**t, son.

  • @edgar-tweedle Brings back memories such as halo masterchief collection L**O

Not to be an a*****e or anything but shouldn't have rare known about it considering other games had a bad launch??? I think rare should of thought about other games and their launches and their problems with it so this wouldn't have happened????? or was the game not ready for it to be released?

  • Definitly not the worst launch ever. Us as consumers expect to much from anything. If you don't expect issues as a gamer then your crazy. Yea it sucks for us but thats how it goes. Imagine if they didn't do those Betas how worse it could be. I think Rare has handled the launch just fine. They have kept us updated on it instead of just keeping quite. Eventually things will be fixed. Sucks about your lost treasures. I had the same problems a few times but i have kept track and it updates mostly if i log out then back in. Just recently i bought new mug from a vendor and it hasn't appeared yet in my inventory but i trust it will make its way there soon.

We where promised a game that worked and allowed people to log in for one. I didn't read anywhere that they said the game was going to be inaccessible to a lot of players, lag out and fail to update your gold. I must of missed that stuff in the developer blogs.

It was also stated in early blogs that the map would take 6 hours to sail around yet i can get from one side to the other in a matter on minuets.

You may be happy with buggy games but there is a lot of people that expect stuff they pay for to work as expected. This game is currently not, there are many many issues. Even the devs acknowledge it why cant you? As for the argument that other games also suffered early issues like this, that is actually just another example of why it is so bad! They should of learnt from seeing other launches have these issues and put stuff in place to deal with it.

You can rent servers monthly it would not of needed much forward thinking to have more servers for the launch week knowing they would be in demand.
