Rare stated that there would be rewards for defeating the kraken, and I was really hoping for a glimpse at the reward when I found this video. I'm curious if it's an item to pick up in the water, or unlocked cosmetics at the shops. I was also really hoping he would jump overboard so we could see what the kraken looked like under water.

Same, but as soon as Rare announced the “murky water” I deduced you can’t see the kraken underwater. Not exactly sure why they chose this method. Probably for reducing additional polygons to load.

The achievement they got doesn't say they killed it, just that they survived an encounter with the Kraken.

The achievement they got doesn't say they killed it, just that they survived an encounter with the Kraken.
If I understand correctly, you can’t move your ship while the kraken is attacking, meaning in order to “survive” it, you must vanquish it.

No. This guy managed to get a few random crews in-game to not kill each other and instead band together against the Kraken. And props to him for doing that.
It also seems they've adopted the "cannons up" stance to mean "friendly"

When you see a Kraken, you forget about battling each other and focus on the beast... unless you're a low life and play on the Kraken team (which will end up kicking your ship too anyway) ;)

I deduced the same the moment I recognised the colour of the ocean in the video. It's ink smudge.

If that's the case, that's pretty lame. So disappointed.
@splatulated No doubt they agreed to focus on the kraken. Nothing close to a fleet confirmation here.
As to the video, I have to say i'm fairly disappointed. The kraken seems more like an appeasement feature than a highlight of the game. The gae has been out not even a day and we've seen it already? I thought it would be a much rarer and more epic ecounter than that. I didn't think we'd hear of the kraken until like a week into release, sine there's no real way to look for the kraken is there?
Then there's the lack of character. It feels just like a bunch of tentacle enemies to fight off. The tentacle also behaive like they are sentient. I'd find it more convincing if the tentacles were clearly guided by a blind being and slowly covered the ship before dragging it beheath the water. What we see here doesn't really come across a*s epic or terryfying at all. 3 sloops and a galleon fend it off on their first attempt? pfff.
Like seems to be almost everything in the game, it needs work if its going to impress a matura audience.

If that's the case, that's pretty lame. So disappointed.
Likewise. However, it fits the fantasy context. Kraken is a some kind of an octopus-squid and some do squeeze ooze to escape. However, a kraken here doesn't use it to escape, but camouflage itself. We need to take a closer look below the water to investigate how a kraken responds to approaching underwater threat.
Not all hope is gone yet! We might see a blink of an eye or perhaps some sturdy scales or better yet, a hungry mouth that eats us in one go after we dive too close to it!!

Nice work to you and the other crews!!The video isn't mine (unfortunately, I'll have to wait a few more hours to play) but I wanted to post footage of a Kraken as soon as someone uploaded, and that was my 1st find :)
