More things to do when boarding a ship

  • Currently, when boarding a ship, players don't have many options for damaging the boat. The only current strategies are to

A: bring a powder keg and detonate it on their ship.
B: take the wheel and slam the ship into something.

Here's a few things I'd like to be able to do when boarding a ship.

Prying wooden planks. This one is pretty self-explanatory; I want to be able to use a crowbar or some other similar tool to rip a wooden plank off a hole in a boat. Of course being able to do this could promote scuttling your ship after each fight, to prevent this from happening as easily, although you could circumvent this by letting holes in ships heal after so much time (this would also help make ships look a bit better after a couple hours on a server, so I don't have to scuttle for the aesthetic).

Cutting ropes and sails. I think it would be interesting to be able to use a sword (or even a blunderbuss) to damage sails, in order to slow down a ship (possibly repairable with a piece of cloth). I'd also like to be able to (and I know this is pushing it) cut the ropes holding sails in place, to immobilize a ship until they're repaired. I believe this would add more reward to successfully boarding a ship, since just dropping the anchor is a very easy fix once a crew respawns.

If you have any comments or other ideas, let me know below!

  • @sweetcalf942652 i agree that the boards should be able to be attacked and destroyed, but i think it should be like 3 strikes with a cutless or 2 firearm attacks, that way it isnt easily done and the defenders can still have a chance, and there wouldnt be much point to scuttling because the next people will have no clue which boards are weaker.

I have a question though. Do cannon shots destroy planks if the shot hits a planked spot in a ship? i havent been able to tell in footage

  • @renoxius Yes, hitting a plank with a cannonball still destroys it. At the moment the only difference between a hole with a plank on it and solid hull is the aesthetic.

  • I would personally like to see a way to start a fire. With say Flint and tender.
Or when you shoot a powder kegs also ignites a fire.
The mechanic to put it out would be easy enough with buckets of water.
Nothing like out grabbing treasure and seeing smoke billowing on the other side of the island lol

  • @sweetcalf942652 I like your crowbar idea, as that also immobilizes you for the duration of the action. As for anything that messes with sails, it should always be able to be fixed by a simple action taken on the affected area, and not actually affect the sails because those are hard to get in contact with. Ie, chain shot will tangle one line and it just requires a player action on the affected line to fix it. Just like repairing holes but with no resource needed. Immobilizing is too strong of a mechanic and should never work its way in. Affecting the ability to use the sailing fixtures in some way is the kind of thing that is balanced.

@Renoxius, swords and guns arent great against thick wood...Crowbar is much better and fits with the mechanics already.

@Fun-Director What would be the effect of a fire though? Its an interesting idea thats very hard to balance and remain fun.

  • I think you guys forgot using buckets to sink a ship or the crying chest!

  • Well to use buckets for that, the ship would have to not be moving for about 10 minutes while you had 3-4 players throwing water onboard (yes, I've tested it). And I dunno about you, but I'm not actively carrying around weepers (they're very annoying, I turn them in just about as soon as I get them), but if I did happen to have one, I also don't want to chance giving away that 1000+ gold just to (maybe) sink a ship with it (since I don't know when it's going to cry or for how long).
