A Captain is a leader of a ships crew, providing orders to his crew and thinking big picture.
A Helmsman is the one who would actually get his hands dirty, collect the splinters and end up with blisters from steering the ship.

@daveyjay1984 I like to be the helmsman even though half the time I'm the captain amongst my friends, it's nice and relaxing to steer a ship.

@DaveyJay1984 Thank you! I was always wanting to rant about this but didn’t know how well it would be received.
I once had a random saying “your the captain, you steer the ship”... Brig!@captinzhou For me this is most notable with the galleon design as the situational awareness at the helm as a result of the sail positioning is terrible.
@daveyjay1984 yeh I joined a few fandoms who didn’t really know what to do and I always assigned one to the helm and one to spotter. I suppose that’s only going to be smoothed out by sailing with a regular crew.

My sloop mate and I call each other captain for fun every now and then. But having a real captain could work... especially on a galleon. Yet, in my opinion captaincy should remain something that emerges from consensus, S.O.T is a video game, not the army! ^^
(Oh and just in case, my main account is not called Capt Baguette ;)I woudn't mind playing with a random galleon crew and have someone be the captain, if he (or she) is like Owen Chase or Jack Aubrey, you know what I mean ^^: a decent individual, and a player with charisma and skill: someone I know I can trust to lead in battle.

@daveyjay1984 Well since the helmsman is normally the one giving orders (on a good ship) and since I love to sail, I am a proud captn who stands sturdly at the helm!
I Helm and Captain the ship. Any monkey can steer, but a helmsman maneuvers. I like having a good Bosun to keep deck lively. it takes 2 guys really to run a ship. I work attack angles and tack ship in a fight. Bosun handles sails and keeps up on repairs. 2 good powder monkeys run the guns. Easy peasy. Rest of time I just keep the wind and set a course to best keep X's close to Ship as possible. And if we run ( fully loaded ) can always avoid a fight by using my boy scout sailing skills !!
@nuclear-duke37 The game definitely aims us towards this as the helm has the chat options for giving orders.
