Easiest way to remember which is starboard and portside is to memorise "No port left".
Easiest way to remember which is starboard and portside
@svetli97 Actually I use them too, and the italian version either. they were used to avoid any confusion, since left and right were too much dependent from where you're looking at.
@Gemini-UK i personally remember them like port and starboard, like reading, from left to right. facing bow. it comes naturally.@deadtree-alive its really the only way ... left and right are not used because if im standing on the bow facing the stern my left is your right :( PORT. four letters LEFT four letters , sorry theres not many other ways
@deadtree-alive everyone. if you turn starport they have to know. either if you yell "port broadside".
@happyalbe I would always tell the person driving he needs to go west south east ,,, or north due south
I haven’t had an issue yet. Most of the crew is able to orient themselves in relation to the ship and figure out that port is the left side of the ship. Just sharing my way of remembering :)
@svetli97 Your post has been removed as it has language that is not acceptable in our community. Please keep in mind the Pirate Code when interacting with the community. Thank you!
@p0pc0rnh3mer01d true. but someone from the crow's nest might find easier to use the port or starboard to explain where a ship is without taking the compass out.
@DeadTree-Alive Yeah, it's pure cosmetics i think, but i like it. no matter even if i use them, i still get sunk every
time. gotta git gud.@deadtree-alive said in Easiest way to remember which is starboard and portside:
I always remember that port is to the left, because they both have 4 letters. Starboard is to the right because it isn’t to the left XD
sounds like you went to Great Lakes too
My son loves his labels!
A post about our first adventures
https://www.seaofthieves.com/forum/topic/34498/now-this-was-a-great-weekend@stonedscallywag Read your story, nice one really! if you ever happen to look for a crewmate for treasure hunting and some battles, count me in! I can't really speak pirate but my English is pretty good!
This might help ...
"The term starboard derives from the Old English steorbord, meaning the side on which the ship is steered. Before ships had rudders on their centrelines, they were steered with a steering oar at the stern of the ship and, because more people are right-handed, on the right-hand side of it." (wikipedia)
When these old ships docked they did so on the 'port-side' so as not to damage the "steorbord" (steer-board/rudder).
@happyalbe and port and starboard are too much dependent on the orientation of the boat so what's your point?
@khaleesibot Explain your actions please. I made a joke that the person who it referred to found funny. So nobody was offended. Except you I guess. Or did someone report it? Since nobody complained about it. I can't follow the pirate code if it obviously isn't what is stated in it. If you give me rules to follow I will. But you clearly don't judge people by whether they follow the rules or not. And it is not even the first time you specifically decided to make up rules that are not in the pirate code just because you felt like doing it.

It's a bot.
