  • @svetli97 Oh absolutely! :D

  • I always remember that port is to the left, because they both have 4 letters. Starboard is to the right because it isn’t to the left XD

  • Left port..... starbright=star right

  • @svetli97 Actually I use them too, and the italian version either. they were used to avoid any confusion, since left and right were too much dependent from where you're looking at.
@Gemini-UK i personally remember them like port and starboard, like reading, from left to right. facing bow. it comes naturally.

  • @deadtree-alive its really the only way ... left and right are not used because if im standing on the bow facing the stern my left is your right :( PORT. four letters LEFT four letters , sorry theres not many other ways

  • @p0pc0rnH3MER01D

When comparing from the front of the ship, looking forward. Really, only the helmsman needs to know, and the cannoneers sometimes.

  • @deadtree-alive everyone. if you turn starport they have to know. either if you yell "port broadside".

  • @happyalbe I would always tell the person driving he needs to go west south east ,,, or north due south

  • @HappyAlbe

I haven’t had an issue yet. Most of the crew is able to orient themselves in relation to the ship and figure out that port is the left side of the ship. Just sharing my way of remembering :)

  • @svetli97 Your post has been removed as it has language that is not acceptable in our community. Please keep in mind the Pirate Code when interacting with the community. Thank you!

  • Fun fact! "Starboard" comes from "Steerboard", the side you steered with on older ships. And you had the steering on the right, hence starboard = right side!

  • @p0pc0rnh3mer01d true. but someone from the crow's nest might find easier to use the port or starboard to explain where a ship is without taking the compass out.

@DeadTree-Alive Yeah, it's pure cosmetics i think, but i like it. no matter even if i use them, i still get sunk every
    time. gotta git gud.

  • @airikr01
    Add to your fun facts.
The term "Posh" came from cruises in which passengers wanted to be Port Out, Starboard Home so that the sun would not shine through their portholes in the morning.

  • During this time period its should actually be called larboard side. Its fun to say too"LaRRRRRRboard side."

sounds like you went to Great Lakes too

  • @spc-petee never heard that!!! guess you always learn something new.

  • My son loves his labels!

  • Way I was taught when I started sailing is
    P O R T 4 letters
    L E F T 4 letters

  • @stonedscallywag LOL!!! :D

  • @gemini-uk are you telling me it's not lefty and righty?

  • The best way is to just keep using port and starboard until it's ingrained in your memory.

My biggest problem is setting a course that's 180 degrees in the wrong direction because I've read the starting and finishing location on the sea chart incorrectly.

  • @stonedscallywag Read your story, nice one really! if you ever happen to look for a crewmate for treasure hunting and some battles, count me in! I can't really speak pirate but my English is pretty good!

  • Always drink port with your left hand. It is the port side so it's the rule.

  • "port and starboard" as read left-to-right, indicating port is left because it's said first, and starboard right, as it's said second.

  • This might help ...

"The term starboard derives from the Old English steorbord, meaning the side on which the ship is steered. Before ships had rudders on their centrelines, they were steered with a steering oar at the stern of the ship and, because more people are right-handed, on the right-hand side of it." (wikipedia)

When these old ships docked they did so on the 'port-side' so as not to damage the "steorbord" (steer-board/rudder).

  • @happyalbe and port and starboard are too much dependent on the orientation of the boat so what's your point?

  • @khaleesibot Explain your actions please. I made a joke that the person who it referred to found funny. So nobody was offended. Except you I guess. Or did someone report it? Since nobody complained about it. I can't follow the pirate code if it obviously isn't what is stated in it. If you give me rules to follow I will. But you clearly don't judge people by whether they follow the rules or not. And it is not even the first time you specifically decided to make up rules that are not in the pirate code just because you felt like doing it.

    It's a bot.

  • @shofficer it is not a bot because it does not behave like one. I've seen his posts and I've seen him post before. It's most likely an account that multiple employees use at the same time.

  • @svetli97 I would also bet its not really a bot. but with ai how it is these days .. who knows

  • @shofficer lol maybe

  • Port has 4 letters. Left has 4 letters.

  • I'm surprised no one else here remembers which is which because of Mass Effect 2. In it, the right side of the Normandy had a, well, an observation deck with panoramic window of the stars.
