Help with choosing a GPU upgrade

  • My PC is going to need a GPU upgrade if I'm going to pull 60 frames on the "Rare" settings. I'm currently running a gtx 660. The requirement chart says a gtx 770, or a "modern" 1060 will do the trick. Do I specifically need either of those, or will a card in between those work as well? (gtx 970 for example). alt text

  • @ferodie a 1060 would be an AWESOME upgrade for you.

  • Right now the market for GPU is screwed because of the Cryptominers.

I'd suggest being on the lookout for sweet deals and/or wait for the launch of the newest generation of GPU.

If you're still wanting to purchase a GPU for Sea of Thieves, I'd consider the 1060 Ti. If it's in your budget.

  • OP...welcome to the daily PC-hell.

GPU prices are through the roof early 2018, not the best time to make an upgrade.

Please give me your motherboard generation/type and the poweroutput in watt of your powerbox....and most importantly, how much you want to spend.

    EDIT:
    GTX660 is a 2GB GPU with Boost Clock : 1046 MHz

Basically you want to get that to a 4GB GPU, or better a 8GB (while the monster 1080Ti is on 11GB)...but dont kill your PC or your wallet by buying something that doesnt fitt on your motherboard or draws to much current.

  • @ferodie Nobody can give you a reliable opinion without knowing your budget limit. Either way check out places like Newegg and Tigerdirect when you're checking out prices. Also Ebay/craigslist if you're the type that doesn't mind used stuff.

  • @kustho Ok I'm pretty new to this so bare with me :)

    -Intel 15-4670 at 3.40GHz
-What I think is the powerbox says 650W
-The motherboard is a msi B85M-P33

It would be great if I could spend less than $200 on this upgrade. Thank you so much for your help.

  • @ferodie It would be very hard at this time, as someone just posted cryptominers have skyrocketed GPU prices and it's hard to get hold of a decent one.

  • A 970 does fine with SoT, however you might not want to invest in an "outdated" GPU, it all depends on your budget.

    Hey there...lets have a look!

1.) I think you mean Intel I5 4670. That Processor is ok it has 4 cores and I have a lot of friends using the I5, yours is a bit older since the last ones were around 7600. For Sea of Thieves your pretty good with it.

2.) 650W are like a standard when you buy a "premade" PC. Gamers love them quiet and powerfull, but 650 is be enough to power a "new" GPU. But go easy on it.

3.) Your Motherboard MSI B85M-P33 takes DDR3 and supports up to I7 chip...that pretty good and up to date.

    • Your PC is ok and its weakpoint is your GPU, your motherboard is imho the best part in it yet.

    • You might want to change your chip in the next year(s) and bring your PC to I7...Intel is on the I9 and gamers are usually 1 generation behind (I sais usually...I know gamers that allways need to have the newest stuff). In your case with I5 you can go a long way with it. Since we speak Sea of Thieves its more then enough.

    • You can build in any GPU you want with that setting, but have a look on you 650W...I'm allways surprised when I see how much current those GPUs eat.

Now...to your budget of 200$. You know that your own GPU you have inside is costing that today? If you'd buy a brand new GTX660 your at 190€ thats about your 200$ today.

There are many GPU that will make you happy, yet...I think around that price I'd go with: - MSI GeForce GTX 1050 Ti Gaming X 4G thats about 220€ today

  • I know you will hate it, I do hate it...but the cheapest way to get Sea of Thieves with decent graphics...is buy an xbox. (I need to wash my fingers after this, yerk...) But its true.

A used XboX one S is about 100$...everybody has a TV at home.

So...if we are speaking ONLY "Sea of Thieves"...the cheapest way to get it is to get a used XboX One and Microsoft Xbox Live gold...thats maybe 100$ and 10$ a month for everything including the full game.

    Just saying it...

  • @siriondb sagte in Help with choosing a GPU upgrade:

    Yes...but not 100% correct.

Cryptomining changed in 2017 a big deal. Before...to mine BTC you used your cores and in such it went over the cpu. In 2017 it became "open to everyone" due to a new mining code using the Nvidea GPUs...equihash for example. Etherium is one of those currencys for example.

Anyway...can we agree that there is nothing better then making $ (real money) while you sleep? Now imagine having a gaming rig...take my GTX1070 for example, I started in Jan 2018 and have my PC mining when I'm not playing. Yes, my electricity bill got raised... and I'm not running my GPU on "boost" since I dont want its life expectation greatly reduced. here my result for 24 hours of having my PC turned on:

0.00030910 BTC a day (24 hours). Thats not much, I agree and depending on your power cost it can drop down to 0...but still you turn current into BTC.

Now...the technology is there...its up to everyone to decide if its worth it.

2018 is a big year for Nvidea, the new chip will come out and thats going to impact on prices a big deal.

  • i'll say Gtx 1060 is best card out there for budget gaming rigs, i have one and i have no problem whatsoever in SoT

I have a GTX 1050 ti and that works perfectly well.

  • I have an overclocked i5 with 4.3Ghz and an overclocked GTX 970 with ~1400Mhz boost and ~4000Mhz ram clock and can confirm that a GTX 970 is very well suited for Sea of Thieves and should be considerably faster than a GTX 1050 Ti and almost reaching GTX 1060 speed while it can be bought used for around the same price as a GTX 1050 Ti since it is unsuited for mining because it draws so much power that it barely breaks even and thus is not generating any profits.

You overclocked that GPU yourself, I guess with the MSI afterburner? Anyway, your overclocked 970 is drawing more power (and in such costs about 1$ per day in current more) then the 1050ti running on standard mode. I did not know if OP knows how to overclock a GPU..hence my 1050 idea.

I further think that the 1050 has a longer usage and in such is a better investment. If we were speaking 2016-17 yes..I would agree with you.

  • @kustho Thank you so much for all your help

I didn't realize how unrealistic my budget was.

    Gtx 1050

This card would work right? Also why is it so cheap?

My guess is that its not good for cryptomining and in such not part of the "we buy 1000 of them in one bulk". Traders are left with it in stock resulting in low price (demand / price).

But I cant tell you 100% why.

  • @kustho As far as the GPU itself though would you recommend this specific one?

@kustho As far as the GPU itself though would you recommend this specific one?

Thats a hard question...I am a PC gamer and tend to put way to much cash in it, I, for myself would allways buy the newest generation of GPU into my PC.

But I am a StarCitizen fan and backer...and that puts me somewhere with the crazys.

Honestly, I think if you get 4 GB card, whatever you chose, you should see a big improvement. But we are speaking sea o'thieves...and in the end, its you that spends his hard earned $.

So..its really hard to write...all I can do is maybe help a little.

  • in the last build i got solid 60 on 1080p resolution with my gtx 780 no additional overclock just factory settings. Video settings were : lighting , shadow on rare or cursed for smooth 60 fps on plunder valley for example which is a big island , the rest were on mythical - sea , textures and what's left.

  • @drbullhammer sagte in Help with choosing a GPU upgrade:

@ferodie I recently upgraded from the 1050ti 4GB to the 1060 6GB and the difference in performance is significant.

Look at the budget...and look what card OP has inside right now.

If, by any chance your still have that 1050 ti lying around...maybe you can get in touch with OP and make him a deal for the used one you have? That would be a win win for everyone.

  • I own an AMD RX 480 4GB and when I'm not streaming, I set everything to Mythical.
I get around 50-60 FPS constantly and I'm happy with it. I don't hit the 60FPS constant, well sometimes I do.

That being said, AMD is notably more affordable than NVIDIA. If you're concerned about saving money, I'd consider an AMD GPU. With that in mind, I must tell you that my personal experience with AMD GPUs hasn't been the greatest. I've had to troubleshoot a lot of issues and this is with several different GPUs.

I don't have much experience with NVIDIA products but from my understanding, the extra money is well worth the peace of mind.

It is...Nvidea is more the plug&play device...keep the drivers up to date and thats it.

AMD is still, more open for people that know exactly what they do, and less plug and never mind about it. But for that you can get decent results in a scale test on a lower budget.

When I give advise on GPU I allways go Nvidea...simply because I never know how deep the know-how of said user is.

  • i have 8700k 16Go DDR4 , with a old GPU 580 GTX ! (because i wait Nvidia for the next gen)

    In 1080 (medium) 40fps ! work perfectly :)

you...put...a 580 gtx on an I7 with 8700?? dude...you have a porche and put bicycle wheels on it ;)

Thats a good investment none the less ! You chip will bring you into 2020. Just make sure your AC power is up to date, I'd go with a 1000Watt for the newest GPU generation.

Just keep in mind that you wont be among the firsts that get that GPU, sadly they will first come out on premade PCs due to deals made in advance...consumer sales will start way later.

  • @kustho

He probably means he's waiting for Next Gen to come out so the prices on the Current Gen drop to a "normal" price again.

    That's what I'm doing. ¯_(ツ)_/¯

  • @drachmul Ok that seems like a good choice then. Thanks for your response

Yes and wait the price for the next gen .. but with a 8700k after you will be quiet 5 years easy :) need only upgrade the GPU .. and my 580 gtx is very good for Sea lol ^_^

  • Hey,

So from experience I can tell you my GTX 1060 3GB OC edition can run the game on max settings and still get 60fps. I'm also running a 3rd gen i5 over clocked to 4.0 GHz.

  • @stone-s113 4k?? if so tell me about this magic, i have a 1060 6gb gettin 30fps

  • I currently have a 780 Classified, getting a 1060 for pretty cheap this weekend :)

I have a Nivida 950/i5 4690k and I get solid performance on Rare with no stutters.

  • hi, I have an MSI GTX 1060 GAMING 6G and it says that it is not good enough.
I have upgraded it to the best it could but it still won't work plz help.
do I need a new graphics card or what?
    thanks in advance

  • Hi all, maybe someone now searching video card, please don't forget about bottleneck of your CPU. (If your CPU reflects high usage with low GPU usage, you have a CPU bottleneck. Similarly, this means that the game is CPU dependent. Looking at the flip side, if your GPU loads are spiking while your CPU loads are at low levels, you have a GPU bottleneck. This also means that the game is dependent on GPU)
If someone need, here article about modern graphic cards (their pros and cons, and technical moments.
Also before choosing card try to calculate it with other pc components, try use some of gpu bottleneck calculators, there are a lot of them online.
