Play Karnath Online! Fan-made Karnath Demo

  • Howdy all!

Really excited for the game to come out, and recently I came across the rules to this "Karnath" game that came with the SoT Cards.

I'm usually a backend Software Engineer, but I thought I'd try my hand at a quick front-end project that would allow me to try out this game "for real"!

So here it is: a quick and dirty (so dirty I'm just hosting it on Github pages) proof of concept that will allow you to play Karnath online!

@Rare-Employee If I'm breaking any rules by making this, or using any of the images (all were from the fankit) please let me know and I'd be happy to take it down and/or change it up. This was the result of me and ~2 hours of messing around while watching TV last night and spamming F5 on the Sea of Thieves Twitter page :)

    Enjoy!

  • Cool I hope this is also in the game for the tavern or ship!

  • Sweet. I love me some in game games. Witcher 3's Gwent gets a lot of notoriety since it's become it's own standalone game but my favorites probably were Caravan from Fallout:New Vegas and Liar's Dice from Red Dead Redemption. I can't think of any more games within a game but I'm sure there's plenty more unique examples out there. I'm glad that Sea of Thieves might have this Karnath in game now too. Only adds to the richness of the world.

  • @cipher-8 I loved Caravan from Fallout: NV! I think that ended up being the way I made like 80% of my bottle caps. I got pretty good at it >:)

  • @personalc0ffee Karnath.

  • @personalc0ffee It's a game created by Rare matey. The Karnath cards you can buy from the store come with a set of instructions, that's my understanding at least.

    @personalc0ffee Karnath.

That's the name of the game in Sea of Thieves. I'm asking what the name of card game it is based on, is called.

Googling Karnath doesn't come up with anything related to card games, only Sea of Thieves, which means it's a made up name.

It is also possible that the game itself and it's rules are entirely created by Rare.

Ya i haven't seen this style of game in anything I've come across and I've done a bit of research on these type of games for my D&D gambling halls i wanted something simple but yet fun. I wonder if Rare has an original idea here or if it was borrowed from something but they added the name to it? There's a lot of old games like this though they might've gotten the idea from one of them and changed it up just a bit.

  • @elem08 Thanks for this!
By the way, I believe Aces should be considered picture cards, counting as 15 rather than one. The official deck of cards that those instructions came with have illustrated Aces. There's two jokers as well, which can be used as any suit.

  • @cpt-kazuto Oh yeah? Thanks for the info! I'll update my code in a bit to make that adjustment :) I can also throw Jokers in the deck, so that should be a pretty quick change!

    Edit: AAaaand it's been updated!

  • @elem08

Great job! My son and I played for over an hour and we'll probably make it a running "pick up" game any time we get a few spare minutes.

  • If flip 2 of same suit does next player continue with rest of remaining cards or reshuffle entire deck? Do the cards go into a discard pile that get flipped up?

EDIT: Nevermind the deck is reshuffled upon bust i see.

  • I saw someone mention liars dice. I played so much of that in red dead redemption on xbox 360. I actually got quite a way up that leaderboard before I quit playing that game. Got to the point I could often win a game without even looking at my own dice. I miss that game.

  • Have any other games that release cards like this came with little game rules like this, I'de like go get some more for my D&D campaign gambling areas.

Ya man, loved that game and when games have mini-games like that in them. Hoping second time around RDR2 is just as good and filled with these special things.

That's what I have been trying to find out.

I googled games like Karnath and just Karnath and found out it is a villain from RARE's Battletoads series which is kinda cool but telling that probably the game was actually conceived by someone at least who's been at RARE awhile.

Someone on Reddit spotted this too, i hope the game can actually be played amongst pirates at the tavern. Hitting X on one of two spots sitting at a table brings you into the mini game view or something. Same would be cool for on the ship. Player 1 holds the deck of cards in his hand and holds it out to other player to see that player sees a HUD option to click or press and start the mini game. Then other pirates in world see them as sitting down (using same sit emote) but playing cards.

  • Not Karnath related but wouldn't it be cool if they implemented a more robust or complete custom card game similar to the likes of Caravan and how that game worked in Fallout: New Vegas? Or even something more trading card game like Gwent.

A trading card game where part of the reason to add it in Sea of Thieves is to give players something to trade amongst each other or purchase with in-game gold the different cards. You could buy specific cards from specific NPC vendors meaning you would have to visit the specific Outpost or Island to get that card you want that fits your deck. Or even finding the cards as lootable objects in the world at random places? They could fit this into their live events too where they release a special rare card only during a weekend live event or something. Play during that event, do the voyage, and as a reward you get gold + the unique card.
to bad standard deck of card will most likely mean no hearthstone/Gwent like trading card game.

Finding and Buying cards then players could access their collection and start building your own deck. With varying strategies to deck building, keep it simple enough but complex enough to be engaging and give reason to find/purchase the rare and better cards.

This would actually be a really cool addition to the game world I think. Give the players who max out everything something to work towards as a nice side thing. Making you find them is a great way of implementing it to the world and promote exploring and searching islands to buy from specific vendors only is also a cool idea.

Of course this is completely skipable so casual players could pick them up if they happened to spot them with the sparkly thing like messages in a bottle or not.

  • I missed the Reddit AMA I was going to ask if this minigame was going to be in-game at the taverns too. Or are Dice so we can play Dice Games like Liars Dice/Perudo or 10,000/6Dice.

If they don't have fully coded minigame i hope they at least add dice but make it up to you to use em in a way to make games out of them maybe. A great way to choose what to do. Highest picks voyage, lowest has to guard the boat, or first to roll snake eyes has to go grab the cobras lol

    Until later...

  • @cipher-8 No mini-games at launch, confirmed on the AMA.

I must've missed that but thanks for telling me.
I hope it's on the road map somewhere.
Not really upset it's not in at launch cuz I'll be busy trying to get to legend.

  • @cipher-8 We mat or may not see dice at launch but it will be up to you to create your own games

Yeah someone else said that too, which is why i included the bit in my last post. That will be fine as long as it's not just 2 dice. Kinda hard to play anything with shaking just 2.

  • Probably unlikely that they ever add in a sit down table at the Tavern to play Karnath, and without that I don't see them adding in a deck of cards...

I think Dice might appear eventually though not as robust as a Perudo/Liar's Dice game.

    From the Reddit AMA,

"We prototyped dice early on in development and it was a lot of fun," Preston explained. "All of our mechanics in Sea of Thieves are to provide players simple tools that let players' creativity define how they use them!"

Then Neate followed up with a more holistic view of gambling implements: "If we put dice in the game we'd love to see what players do with them. For example, using them to direct your adventure. Roll six to head West!"

Finally, Chapman brought things back to sea-level: "Whatever we do we'll look to continue players' immersion and not take them out of the world into a minigame or separate modes."

  • @elem08

This game is so simple but addictive.
I must have lost against myself like 6 times now.
