Thinking about buying Elite Dangerous Standard Edition - any advise?

  • The game seems pretty cheap on xbox live at the moment, anybody out there with recent experience of the game that can recommend or otherwise and give me a few pointers?

  • @shaggiedo If you enjoy grinding for the sake of grinding, then sure. Flying the ships feels great, but there's really nothing to the game except repeating the same activities over and over again to increase your credit balance. Almost everyone plays in solo, so it's not like you even get cool emergent situations like you do in SoT.

There's a HUGE grind wall before you can even think about participating in PvP, as well, and there's absolutely nothing to gain from PvP, either, it's just a rich man's hobby.

If it's cheap I'd still recommend it just for the experience of flying a space ship around. There's enough variety to keep you going for a while, but once you realize that you're just flying around a dead, empty galaxy earning credits just for the sake of having them, you'll get bored real quick.

  • @bitmapman Thanks for the reply and advise. What you said falls in line with some of the reading Ive done. The game in my region is $16 down from $40 so thats not too bad. Not a huge fan of entirely grinding, but some of the space stuff interest me, and I wanted to get back a space sim ever since Halo Reach.

  • If u like astronomy and flying you should buy it

  • Elite: Dangerous Is an amazing, beautiful game! If I were you, however, I would buy the edition of the game that comes with the Horizons DLC, as much of the content of the game comes from it. Landing on planets, driving rovers, customizing your pilot, ships with crews... It's all part of horizons. I hope you're satisfied with the game, should you decide to buy it.

If you have a capable PC, I feel the game is more enjoyable due to the possible graphical settings and those who prefer mouse and keyboard, and the open world may seem more alive, as Steam recently had a massive sale on the game!

    Have fun in space!

  • If you can get the horizon DLC it adds so much to the game but imo treat it as a exploration simulator and watch lots of YouTube tutorials to get you started

  • A nice game, but very repetitive. Also, I had a really painful time to come close to our Solar system. When you begin Alpha Centauri is the closest system you can jump to in hyperspace, and the travel to the orbital outpost in this system takes nothing less than 2 hours straight of flight at max speed. It killed the hype for me ^^

Play it with a joystick. The gameplay experience is a lot better.

  • Elite dangerous is best played in VR , it's mind blowing, .. But it's like Marmite as a game, love or hate it.

  • If you want to meet up in game send me a friend request and PM I have it installed. Although I'm far from good at the game I don't mind flying around the starting zones for a bit too help you out.

  • @shaggiedo You should buy sea of thieves instead. I don't know if you heard of it but it's a really fun game to play.

  • I have Elite Dangerous Horizons on my computer and use a set of nice flight sticks to fly. I played it on my Xbox and it was ok but flight sticks give you a real feel of flying your ship. I play with my brother so I always have a wingman. There is a number of things to do, passenger missions, mercenary, bounty hunting, merchant, etc. I recommend you download the app for more detail. It is a bit grindy but if you gets some friends to join you, it can be a lot of fun.
