Single player = unplayable

  • When you sunk 4 ppl galeon solo and still see threads like this
    alt text

  • @balaooziin been playing solo since day 1 and have had no problems. I have outsmarted 4 man galleons and out manoeuvred other slops, whether they be 2 or 1 man.

I have not had a problem when it comes to firing cannons, steering or repairing. I think you haven't spent enough time learning the game to complain about single player, in my honest opinion. I actually prefer playing single player, unless I can get some of my friends online.

  • @balaooziin I think you could benefit from this

  • @Balaooziin Some mighty help yer getting me lad! Be sure to show this crowed how warn it makes yer heart feel!

  • Unless you crew up with friends before entering SoT your going to play with randoms or solo. You might get lucky and crew up with great players. Likely your gonna get idiots or noobs.
This is when solo play is a godsend. Take a page from the DayZ playbook, assume your Kill On Sight and always look behind you.

  • solo player = expert/hardcore/professional mode. You should not be able to be good starting out as solo. You venture with a crew to learn and once you mastered a lot of things then you can go on solo adventures. I love the sloop so much. I used to be frustrated before but once I got the hang of things with a crew I was able to hold my own solo. Would carry around 5-7 chests before deciding to go back to an outpost (only because I had to buy more voyages). I even left the lanterns up because I had no fear. Bring on the galleons.

  • @nefrit-od how did you manage that?

@nefrit-od how did you manage that?

sloop has more mobility and galeons easy to fight near rocks or islands:

    • Don't engage melee fight
    • escape port and starbort fights use angles and atk from stern or stem
    • Gather supply before fight :) you need a lot of cannon balls to sink them :)
    • Galleons crew usually don't work as team :D one of the fights 3 of 4 guys tried to take me aboard and 1 last man just can't handle with repairs and sailing
  • @balaooziin A more accurate statement would be

Single player = very hard mode

Going solo is very hard, but sinking a 4 man galleon solo is very satisfying.

  • It really needs balance. Don't listem to the "you're just a bad solo player" or the "you can always escape" people. If you are a portuguese speaker come to the Piratas Jah-maicanos! https://discord.gg/JEKh7z8

    @zakarus
And if you play with your high Elo friends in a Moba you will die all the time and ruin the game for you.
Solution: Don't try to play above your skill cap, if you are not good enough to play solo start in a galleon with 3 more people and with time you will be able to sloop as 2 and finally to solo sloop.

Instead of refusing to play with other players in a higher difficulty setting, failing miserably and then coming here to cry.

Fact is : At equal skill, a 2-men sloop will always be at a big advantage compared to a 1-man sloop. No. Matter. What. (not even talking about galleon)
So there is evidently a balance issue. That's undeniable.
But where i join you is if one is not willing to endure the potential unbalance that goes with the solo play, maybe he shouldn't play solo.
Personally, i don't see anything to remove this unbalance, two men will always be more efficient than one (at equal skill level of course). That's just common sens.

I don't know how i would feel about solo players only servers.

  • @balaooziin I wouldn't mind a rear cannon

  • Of course playing solo can be frustrating, but it would be much more frustrating if a one man sloop was as strong or even stronger than a 2 man sloop. Or if a 2 man sloops were as strong as a galleon. It just makes no sense to create a cooperative multiplayer game, if non cooperative players had an advantage.

  • @balaooziin They only added singleplayer because they felt like they pretty much had to, despite their vision for the game. The game is designed to be a social experience, and that's where it's strengths are.

That said, I feel like single player is useful if you simply have to play alone cause you can't use your mic. It's good for when you're in the pursuit of something you really want to buy, but the situation at hand doesn't let you progress towards it unless you struggle through singleplayer and aim to run away from all encounters.
In case your in that situation and need to escape a galleon to keep your chests, I heard if you sail into the wind you're faster than a big ship, but that could be a myth.

  • no its not. solo sailing or 2 man swooping is objectively easier. A 1 vs 2 isn't unplayable and galleons are easy to out maneuver.
The forum has turned into sea of whiners lately. if you don't wanna deal with piracy, don't play a pirate game.

  • Been reading many positive experiences and had a few myself, All solo experiences, so this pretty much shouts at me that it is rather playable...

  • While I do believe that solo players should stand a chance, I do think larger crews operating efficiently on bigger ships should always have the upper hand. They tell you right out the gate that soloing is going to be a challenging experience and they always recommend working in a crew.

A crew of 4 that work effectively should of course have the upper hand, It's like a reward for team work etc. There's no point penalizing a crew because they work well together.

  • @aenima123 Okay maybe it was a bad comparison.
People have to understand that it-s an unbalanced game by nature and that-s a good thing, this is not an Esport where everything has to be balanced milimetrically, you have to think about it as difficulty settings with some pros.

Someone who plays Doom on easy will have an advantadge over someone who plays it on the hardest setting if they wanted to compete on a speedrun but that doesn't mean the game is poorly balanced, this are just 2 different modes.

Sloop and galleon are different modes of play and the other players on that server act as super smart IA (for the most part), playing on a galleon gives you safety at the cost of freedom, the sloop gives freedom at the cost of safety.

You choose your play style and deal with the consequences, but you cannot get both, total freedom and a safety net, that would break the game, that's why safezones are not good, that's why improving the sloop is not good, etc

90% of complaints on this game are from players with a taste that doesn't fit their selected play style:

    • People who wants to explore crying because their teammates have other plans
    • People who play solo but don't want to take the carefull approach

The easy solution: Play according to your needs instead of forcing yourself in a position you don't want to be in for Ego reasons, etc

  • @nefrit-od you seem quite well knowledged about ships. I'd like to discuss some Naval Warfare tactics with you with a cup of grog.

  • I'm always solo, I haven't sunk many ships as I tend to focus more on out maneuvering and sneaky tactics, but in my whole time playing I've only lost my loot once. You have to play super cautious and unfortunately assume everyone you see is going to kill you. Biggest tip I can give is don't be afraid to sacrifice your ship, if your being chased and only have 1 chest on board get close to an island grab your loot and bail, let them chase your unmanned boat out to sea, hide your chest in the bushes, after you think they have sunk you, grab the mermaid and your ship and go back for your loot.

  • Hmmm. I have never had a problem with single player personally. It is definitely harder to do everything yourself and makes you concentrate more for a longer period, but I think it is fairly balanced as to the different ships, and I have never had a problem getting away from pursuing galleons. Two man sloops are probably the biggest difficulty, as they match you with a permanent advantage in APM and just players, but that just encourages me to try risky plays with boarding or powder kegs which is always interesting and fun even if I lose. The best advice I would give to solo players is to minimize time on the wheel and scan the horizon from the crows nest as much as possible if you want to avoid threats (if you see them before they see you, you can get away or plan a strategy against them) and make sure all you're lights are out, as I've seen a bunch of other solo sloops with lights on and they are SUPER visible. There are a bunch of other tips for solo sloops in a thread on here if you want to search it up, its a good read. Whether you focus on playing for treasure or the thrill of pvp, the first priority is to have fun (^-^ )/ Happy Hunting!

  • @thx1138 Too late. during the beta I was anchored and the ship blew up. Thankfully the ship sinks slower if it is stopped and I was able to save it.

  • I absolutely hate to say this, but get good.
Its not easy to sail alone, that I will admit. However if you learn how your sloop works, and how to sail properly you will have an easyer time. Practice makes perfection

  • @Balaooziin I usually turn in with 2 or 3 chests when I'm solo and just keep an eye on the horizon at all times. You don't have to steer all the time so make sure you are constantly adjusting sails.
Also, sailing alone is supposed to be more difficult. If you don't like it, you can either try to get better at sailing so you can get away more often or start sailing with a crew. Splitting up the servers for solo players is bad news though. I rather enjoy the challenge of solo sailing and I've seen more than a couple of videos of people sinking galleons solo.

  • @balaooziin I had no problem gaining chests, turning them in, I even managed to take down galleons of 4 people solo all the time.

Now if it was a well run galleon where eveyone communicated it would be harder but its not hard to avoid or run or fight even if your smart about it.

  • The game literally states that solo is more difficult. It's far from "unplayable" though.

  • If single player was meant to be easy, There would be no point in multiplayer.

  • @balaooziin Is easy... Try to escape from all that bois.

  • Similar for me too... Played in the beta & both stress tests- tried solo straight away & persevered... Made an absolute balls up of it to begin with, but stuck at it & 'got good' out of necessity... (Not a brag- get good= mostly stayed alive...)
I don't go looking for fights- sinking galleons isn't my motivation for slooping- keeping off the radar is tho...
I fly back to the outposts regularly- never more than 3 or 4 chests aboard ever. I always sail unlit- strictly no lanterns. Set sail at first light of the morning & drop off booty when it's dark...
Bottom line: be cautious. Head constantly on the swivel. Use your scope all the time. Master your sails & your anchor to be able to move at a moment's notice. Never approach an outpost blind- & be prepared to move on to another one in a moment if your destination is occupied...
Sail solo & you are a little fish in a big sea filled with 4-man sharks & 2-man hunter-killers, and it is hard- but I've loved every minute of it!
So no- single player isn't unplayable- it just depends on why you're playing...

  • @balaooziin Lose all your treasure?! If you're playing solo why do you have more than one chest on your ship at a time?

  • @balaooziin
I disagree, I think bad players have trouble flying solo. You are in the most mobile ship.
What solo players who are complaining about this lack is awareness.... be aware of who is around you, always check... I found solo play to actually be a lot of fun. But a different kind of fun... It's intense knowing you are alone and have to do everything your self and be more careful

  • @papasohan There are Voyages where you can find more than one treasure. The "X marks the spot" maps can have several treasures depending on the level of the voyage.

  • @im-axis-rahl said in Single player = unplayable:

Solo is very playable. I am much more profitable per hour playign solo than I am with a group. You have to keep your eyes open and know when to run.

Exactly this! I enjoy it more than sailing with a galleon and friends. The thrill of playing solo, I love it!

  • @el-espectro-0 Yes, and you can get them one at a time and return them one at a time to the outpost - or risk carrying multiples. You do not need to get all the chests for a quest all at once.
