Whats the reason of "showing map to somebody"?

  • I mean, if you are in a crew, you all see the same. So its a senseless feature, from my opinion. What do you think?
How would this feature make sense? Any ideas?

  • @keyl0ggs What about if you need to look at a compass? Your crew can show you the map while you navigate with the compass.

  • This is a four man experience I'll say, but: The purpose is that your entire crew travels together in search of the treasure, and one person is dedicated to the map, always holding it giving out directions for a riddle, or turning it to show me, or another the mark of the x whilst the other holds the compass to lead us the way, another with a shovel, and one with a weapon.
I also get that you'll always want a person on the ship for lookout, but since you'll be working quick to find the treasure, you'll be fine. Most time I've spent on a island is 8 minutes, and that was because we fooled around more than usual.

Me and my crew do this, and it makes treasure hunting so much more effective, in my opinion. When it comes to two man, it can be the same, but I haven't tried, so I can't say how effective it may be, but I would assume it works just the same.

  • I have used the show map a lot of times when sailing with people who don't belong to my crew, as they have no acces to the map. This way they are still able to join the search for treasure or riddles.

  • The feature to "show" maps is a hold-over of the early days when each map was held by it's owner. Not everyone was given a map like it is now. So when on an island or whatnot, you would have to show your map to other crewmates so they could help sort out the treasures location.

  • @keyl0ggs its still useful if a random friendly decides to tag along with you and they decide to help you find the treasure. say someone is a legendary pirate and wants to help out some newbies.

  • I find it useful when you want to help out someone find their X Marks the Spot.

    and then steal it...

  • Maybe because there can be more than 1 at a time?

If you don't have a mic, a good way to indicate to your teammates which map you want to do; is show them

  • @siriondb yeah, could you show me that map again while I show you my blunderbuss? Don't try it again, huh? ;)

  • I used the feature with the spyglass to get a closer look at the map when I don't have access to the ship map, or when no one is on the ship to help look using the big map.

  • @keyl0ggs

I found it helpful if one person stands in front of the big map holding up the little map while the other looks for the island in the big map.... if that makes sense lol

  • If your lazy and you know your the captain

  • @sergent-c****r That's the best way to make sure you get the right 'smaller' islands (a couple do look kinda the same) and you can't quite remember which one it is.

  • I think it is as usefull as you make it.
Some won't need it and some will use it.

In our crew we used it mainly to troll the pirate on the steering wheel by standing in front of him and show him the map in a way he couldn't see anything else, and repeated something like: "We need to go here, did you see it? Are we there yet? Where are you going? That's the place we need to go!"
Same with the compass or the watch.
    It was hilarious.

  • to show de non believas de wei

**if I could upvote myself I would

  • i believe the first reason was rare wanted only one person to have the map... but they realise its gonna be a problem so they give the map to every body...
now the use of it is; when you search an Island on the big map... its convenient to just be able to see it from your friend than yourself..
and if you meet other friendly crews? they can help you solve it if you are lost!! :)

I second this. I always thought that it's usefulness would be if there was only one map on the player that has the journey. So only he can read it and show it to the others. I mean, it would be a little more immersive, thus forcing player to really cooperate in setting the course and finding the treasure. Just making the maps appearing to all players once the voyage it's accepted just breaks that since every player starts reading it on it's own and start spreading across the island just wanting to dig the treasure randomly. There should be only one treasure map imo so a better coordination would be necessary in solving the mystery.

  • Showing your map can simply help while the other player is searching for the island on the larger map. So they dont have to close out, pull thiers out, then go back.

That would make sens, because there is no real practical reason to this feature, even if it can be funny sometimes.

  • So you can show your map to other crews and brag about how many more treasure chests you get to find than them! ;)

Why and how did they realize it's going to be a problem? Is the reason for this decision stated somewhere? Some release notes or something? I would really like to know more. I really wish for only one player to have it.

  • Long time ago we had a great experience in a pioneer season when we met as 4 player ship a 1 player ship, and the guy helped us repairing our ship and looking for treasures, we showed him our map and he helped us to get all chests in a faster time, then we shared the chests with him.

  • I find this pretty useful if there's another crew on the island looking for their chest but got stuck and in need of abit of help, and not using a mic, one of them shows their map and I can then help them find their chest (without stealing it). I hope they keep that in release, it's a nice little thing to be able to do.

  • @keyl0ggs why are you complaining about that? Seriously? It’s funny you can joke around with people and say “hey look we gotta go right here” then flip the map to them etc

They realized it in internal testing before the alpha. IIRC, they disliked the way it 'pigeonholed' players into "being the one who has to hold the map". They went in the direction of more player flexibility.

  • Just the other day during the scale test, a lone stranger asked me for help finding a treasure. He showed me his map and we found it. Then he asked if I needed help with my map.

  • @bobyslick it was mention by one of the developer ... one of the first video they made... on you tube we can find... in my memory was the blonde pretty girl who share some news on video... "shelley Preston"... check their first developers video they made... the info is on one of them...( they just said they chose to give the possibility to everyone to do anything... instead of make some role... map holder, compass holder, shovel holder... ) that the reason given...

Interesting. Thanks for the hint. Will definitely check out those videos. Cheers!

  • @keyl0ggs

The only real use I have found for it is sharing your maps with another crew, or if you recruit additional crew members. It may seem kind of funny at first but it very useful.

  • it could be for when fleets/armadas are introduced. The crews on each ships may participate in separate voyages and may need help from each other. so when they meet up, they can show the map.

although I do lean more towards the thing about each member having a role (map, compass, shovel, etc.)

I would say they should keep the feature for those who may be struggling with there map and stumble upon a friendly crew.

I do enjoy the way it used to be an feel that encountered more crew cooperation and communication. Although it could also be used to troll your team members. So I guess balance in all things...

  • @keyl0ggs Co-op work with people who is not in your crew is one of the ways people were using it. Also, those who don't use mic, but chat-wheel instead, can tell this way, which area do they want to go to. Yes, on PC you could also type it in the chat, but if you don't know it's name, what will you tell? "3rd map on the wheel" (if it even looks the same and your map-wheel is not filled), or "the island that is shaped like a half broken rock and a kicked donut"?

It also comes in handy even when you are telling to the person who is marking on the map-table "hey man, could we go to this one first? It was close by, but you didn't mark it".

There are many ways to use it. Showing it to a team-mate just because the feature is there, not "useful", but there are actual situations where it becomes quite handy.
