What if we could capture pets in the wild?

  • I know that the interviews with our Benevolent Overlord Joe Neate introduced us to the idea of pets in game, and that we can purchase them once this component goes live, but I implore you to hear out this harebrained concept of mine:

Given that capturing animals is already in game, what if we could purchase a "collar" that would allow us to chase down one in game animal to keep as a pet?

The game play possibilities are huge for this. Each island could have a number of species known to inhabit it. Special event animals to hunt that only appear for a limited time. Incredibly rare variants that would give those invested in this mechanic something to chase for the foreseeable future.

Even if there was a cost to purchase additional collars, I think it would add a real level of depth to the pet system, and something of a back story to our fury companions... We'll always remember the time we chased them down, or befriended them, and it'll all add to our Pirate Legend!

I'm totally just spitballing ideas here, and I'd love to hear what everyone else thinks!

  • I definitely like the idea of being able to capture pets. Maybe only some actually need to be captured, that way people can still buy some straight up? Would love to chase down my future monkey and force him to love me :)

  • @xcalypt0x Yh same i would love rare to add that to the game! Capturing pets would be awesome!!!

  • I think that there should be a default variant for the pets available without the pay wall. Maybe implement a type of mechanic that makes it to where you need a cat/parrot/monkey. Examples would be rats can get into your ship's food supply causing your banana count to go down if you don't have a pet to eat/chase them out.

  • @logpowerslave Aye, this not be Sims of Thieves laddie. Pirates be getting mighty domesticated these days.

Take what ye can, and give nothing back!!!

Unless it’s a puppy. Ok I want a pirate puppy. With a lickle eye patch and a bandana.... ooooooh he’s so cute. Who’s a cute little puppy?

    Ahem ahem. Sorry about that.

  • @snowbodhi hahahahaha. I wish you and your adorable sounding puppy nothing but high seas hilarity my fellow scurvy dog!

  • This is a good idea that let's them have their cake and eat it too. Even something like a $5 charge per collar which would allow you to capture and release as many times as you like. This way, you buy a collar and get a pet then if you want another different pet, you either have to release the one you have or buy another collar. The mechanic of hunting down rare pets during timed events or on secret islands that only appear for short times would incentivise players to choose between their beloved pet and a shiny new one. Players who just want the coolest new pet can do so without having to spent a fortune and players who want multiple pets simultaneously can have them all! It also mechanically forces players to get out in the world and find the animals they want as pets which I feel is in line with the ethos of Sea of Thieves gameplay design.

  • @mrdestiny17 I really like the idea of expanding the pets system in game, whatever shape it takes. It's definitely something that would add so much depth and story. Rats sound mad annoying, but I like the mechanic idea haha

  • @adz1up6k I know right! Let's cross our fingers for down the line.

  • @xcalypt0x agree 100% with this.

  • @logpowerslave as long as any mechanics associated with a pay wall have nothing to do with anything besides cosmetics of course!

  • @mrdestiny17 if it's a one time purchase for a single reusable collar, I would feel like it's a Micro DLC. Like, instead of paying for a game expansion, it's just paying for the ability to access a new suite if gameplay mechanics. This way, you sort if bolt on the bonus mechanics that you want to use. Ideally, there would be no pay wall for any content but this system could be a good and equitable direction for MTs moving forward.

  • @logpowerslave Grrrrrrarrrrrr

Because embedding pictures never works for me:

    Pirate Puppies

  • @tow3r-87 Sounds like a great idea! It would make it to where players could get a taste of pets, and for some, that's all they want! As long as a game can satisfy me 100% I'm happy with content locked completely behind a pay wall. An example would be 2$ skins in Black Ops 2, I was happy with my gold skin, so I never bought them. If I'm happy with Sea of Thieves and pets are something I can live without then I'm fine with that.

  • Pets are a good idea, but only if we have real pets like birds or monkeys!! But only that!! No fake pets please

  • I'm all for tameable pets as a side option to the current purchasable option Nor as a replacement but as another route.

So following on from the above I'd say nay to collars but if the games eco system is going to be as diverse as teased then tameable creatures would be great, obviously if needed keep the rainbow f*****g gold plated parroquete for the exclusive store but a grindable findable tameable pet would be awesome as it generates story.

  • @xcalypt0x said in What if we could capture pets in the wild?:

I would imagine a few pets might involved as quest rewards...capturing certain animals unlocks them for purchase too.

  • @laughsmaniacaly if there were options to get pets in game without paying for them, that would be ideal. My concern is if they are planning on adding features to the game that are behind a pay wall, I would prefer a system that is an incentive to spend money as opposed to a punishment for not. To try and give an example, if the system is pay for a monkey, then when they release a pet you want more, you then need to pay a second time for a new pet. The more cool pets they release, the more you pay. With a collar system or something similar, when new pets are released, you can in theory have access to them without spending more money. If you want to keep your old pet or just have a few kicking about your ship, then you pay more money to have multiple at the same time. It's a subtle but important difference that focuses on putting the power into the players hands. If that makes any sense?

  • @tow3r-87 i can follow that, it would stimulate the economics without hiderence to those who have made a prior purchase, my amendment would be to still have a shoddy collar or worn collar option available to those who don't or can't purchase exclusive content. Obviously less flash and purchased with standard gold so you'd still need to grind to buy it and then grind to tame your pet.

  • @laughsmaniacaly I agree mate, it would be nice for there to be another avenue of acquiring pets. The collar system was just something to give the idea a starting point, I've got no doubt the Devs could come up with something much better!

  • @xshadovvhunterx this is another aspect to it. Perhaps some animals are just a random occurrence in the world, but others could be quest rewards. Maybe you could be given the choice between turning in the animal to the appropriate vendor, or doing the pirate thing and keeping it for yourself!

  • @laughsmaniacaly I love this! Maybe with a worn collar, you can only have a pet out for a short period of time and then have to wait for a cool down before whipping them out again. Alternatively, a worn collar could be used for basic level pets.

  • @LoGPowerslave I really like the idea of pets, however, let's not forget what we are. We are PIRATES! While pets would be cool, they would have to be "piratey" pets. I don't know what you had in mind by "rare" and what all pets you had in mind in general, but I think only a small variety would work. Take, for example, a dog. On a pirate ship? More of a nuisance than a help. I hardly think pirates sailed around with dogs. Cats? Nope. There's water. Monkey. Sure, as long as it is banished to your shoulder unless swimming. And what about when you die? How does your pet tie in. Spawn with you? Catch a mermaid with you? Parrot. Yes! Once again, banished to shoulder. Other than that I don't see too many "piratey" options.

  • @juicysneeze118 well they've already said there is going to be cats, monkeys and parrots available through Microtransactions down the line, so I was just extrapolating from that. As for the idea of rare animals, I just mean that it could have a different coat or something to that effect. Ultimately they are solely a novelty item.

  • @ant-heuser-kush thanks for sharing man. Yeah, I guess there is a little bit of crossover.

  • @shadowstrider-7 I will take one pirate Dodo as soon as possible thankyou!

  • @juicysneeze118 The great thing about emergent gameplay is that it allows you to chart your own course when it comes to how you want to play. All sorts of ships have animals on them from dogs and cats to sheep and cows. What being a pirate means to you, may not be the same as someone else. I personally want to sail the seas fighting skeletons and helping other players find treasures all while having my trusty pet piglet by my side. Don't limit yourself to what you think a pirate has to be but instead, what it could be.

  • @logpowerslave when I think rare animals, I think baby leopards and panthers. Dodo was a good example. Different breeds of animals that function the same but have a different look. Instead of a parrot, maybe an eagle or hawk. Adding cosmetic varieties to the existing animal types but have the drop rate on them be considerably lower than the common versions.

  • I have an idea what if instead people that buy a pet can only have one at a time and it comes with a collar. because it is now a physcal item in the world if they release the pet out into the world inorder to get the collar so they can cap a new pet. The old pet will stay in the world so some else can cap it were they spend money or not. They are literally paying to bring pets into the world sea-of-theives and since it is animal like the pigs they are vunerable to damage so they have to be looked after. Having an experation date.

  • @logpowerslave that would be amazing!

  • I lizard is what I be wantin’.

  • This isnt pokemon :P

  • @mordimeir Hahahahaha. I know, I know... But it would be so fun...

Having said that, would sell my soul for a massive Gyarrados that swims along behind the boat!

  • @dutchdeadschot an Iguana would be delightful. I'd call him Gus.
