The sky needs improvements!

  • This might be the most overlooked detail in the game but...

While playing the closed beta I looked up at the sky for the very first time on the last day of the beta and I couldn't understand what in the world was going on.. There are so many different SHAPES that it didn't make any sense whatsoever. The water looks AMAZING in this game and makes you feel like you are actually on the sea but the sky definitely needs more work. It would be cool if they took out the cartoon aspect out of the sky the way they did with the ocean and everything in between is perfect the way it is.

It was very difficult to determine which part of the sky was a cloud, the blue sky, the storm clouds or the floating hurricane or whatever that was. I bet that nobody actually took the time to look up. Most of the problems with the skies occur in the not so sunny zones. I really hope they make it look realistic. It is Unreal Engine 4 after all...

Let me know what all you pirates think. Maybe I'm just high on something.

  • Sky looked fine to me. Could easily tell what was a cloud and what wasn't. And I do believe all the clouds are dynamically generated on the fly by the game.

And this is by far the most out there complaint I've ever heard about Sea of Thieves.

  • i think the clouds were ugly and kind of odd looking, they could definitely be improved upon

  • Dynamically generated? That would make sense why the clouds looked ugly on my game. Maybe you didn't see what I've seen @The-Lion-Turtle . It was the different black shapes of clouds overlapping each other. If they removed all Clouds, the blue sky looks amazing and the night sky looks amazing. I don't understand why they had to ruin it with the shapes of clouds while the water looks amazing.

  • @sloshed-smurf Clouds are much more spares in 2 of the 3 biomes. The overcast one is meant to look the way it does. Unable to see the sky. Grey and black clouds that look really drab and depressing

I spent a lot of time looking at the sky in the game and can say that I honestly didn't see much issue with it. The clouds fit the art style.

  • So there was a video showing different effects (that I cannot find, though I suspect it may have been in the 2016 'con' video) that were controlled by 3 seperate wheels on a beach. However, below you'll find a Short Haul about clouds.

  • @sloshed-smurf Hi there, for me the clouds and the sky were absolutely fine, i like the style they chose, and having them randomly generated with all different shapes is nice indeed.

In this video, around minut 4:00 they talk few seconds about the cloud system

Well these skies looked a lot better than what was in the closed beta. And he mentioned a key aspect I wish they would implement but didn't because it was "difficult" as he said which is the fluffyness. On my game all the clouds were not fluffy so they didn't blend into each other. They were drawings done by a 2 year old. The increase in fluffyness would fix this "The sky needs improvements!" issue. I had my settings on Max.

  • Woahhhh! I love the sky, i usually always find myself on the bow sprit staring at the sunset or sunrise. Heck.. i think ive seen more sunrises in Sea Of Thieves then i have in reality l**o. Says alot to be honest xD

  • @sloshed-smurf Based off of what I've seen in videos on Youtube, the sky looks fine in my opinion, if anything thats one of my favorite artistic parts of the game besides the water of course.

  • The clouds were definitely weird looking, however after getting used to them I realized the game was probably running so well with dynamically created clouds because they looked such a way.

  • @sloshed-smurf Maybe you were playing with low graphic settings.

  • I agree, the clouds were a bit ugly. It was interesting though, because in some areas they had realistic looking clouds and in others they had the cartoony version. I think they should go with a more realistic cloud type to match water below. The night sky was awesome though. I loved how they incorporated the aurora and the north star.

  • Seems the experience that the employees at Rare are creating is on-point if we're discussing the look of the clouds and sky.

For me, this is kinda like going to a tavern and discussing how the floor looks...well, I would talk about the look of the floor after many, many, many rounds...

  • I think they look pretty good. Most of the time your looking at the ocean anyways for ships that will come attack you.

  • I think your tripping on acid, then washed it down with grog.
It's not as awesome as the water, but its as good as the rest of the world.
Navigating by the North Star, the Aurora Borealis, the day/night cycle, moon phases.
Dude, pump up your graphics to "mythical".

  • I thought the sky was fine. I do admit I spent most time staring at the sea however.

But I think the sky is the least of Rare's problems with this title at the moment.

Seriously no idea what you're talking about here. After being sunk by the first storm I sailed into, I've sailed around every one since with pretty good precision. How would that be possible playing solo if they were so difficult to discern?

Read the previous posts. I said I was using max settings.

So the water is your favorite part of the game. That's awesome, its my favorite artistic parts of the game as well! I am glad that we can agree on something. But I just wish the sky would be equally as great.

  • Sky looks fine. Especially the storm clouds.

Its not forza/halo good but for what its worth it works.

Anything else to complain about? This is scraping below the barrel now.

  • @sloshed-smurf Oh okay, too many posts too read, sorry haha
I don't know then, the sky looks weird sometimes but overall feels like a better than average game sky to me.

  • I agree, the sky doesn't look on par with the incredible quality of the water. Sunrises/sunsets look good, so to be specific, it's the clouds they don't look very good imo, even in max settings.

  • Other than the stunning sunsets I can’t say I’ve ever really noticed the sky in the game. With that in mind I can only conclude that it’s currently nothing to marvel at, but likewise nothing to complain about either.

There are other things I’d definitely prioritise over the sky, but in a beautiful game like this that same artistic touch would not be unwelcome.

Which games are you referring too? I wish it would be like any of the Far Cry games skies.

  • I love the clouds in Sea of Thieves.

I believe a lot of people see the sky as not as good as other games, but you have to realize that most of the skylines are static.
Large walls around the game zone, or Sky-boxes are the most common form of skies.
Sky-painting is a talent and done really well in a lot of games; but they aren't animated.

Sea of Thieves has an animated sky with 24 min day/night cycle with physical clouds that can change independently.
It's a beautiful thing incorporated with the art style, lighting engine, sun, moon, stars, and aurora borealis.

That being said, on my Xbox One S, during the Beta, I did notice some clouds stuttering on the edges, but only sometimes. I didn't notice an issue in any Dev videos or Alpha testing videos so I imagine the release cloud build is more stable and variable than what we saw in the Beta.

I can't really complain because this is the most beautiful game I've seen and I only managed to squeeze 92 hours of gameplay out of the Beta.
I have so much Withdrawl. 36 more days... Yarr.

  • I agree cloud movements, wind and storm clouds should be improved, also I hope they will add seagulls to the game they can fly near islands and even maybe p**p on you :D

  • The sky overall looks amazing, and pretty much every single part of what makes up the sky looks great. The one thing I personally think doesn't look too great and looks kind of blurry and..basically of bad quality is when there is a storm starting, and you see the long black rings of cloud on the very edge of the storm circling it, those always look really bad to me. The rest of it looks amazing.

That last part that you described is why I made this post. I just didn't know how to describe it.

Why does my game look so bad compared to that??? I have all my graphics on max settings. Im on 1080 GTX graphics card. There's no reason for mine to not look as good as theirs.

That i dont know. For me it looks the same as the sea of thieves example i posted. So i have no idea why.

  • @memmymo @Sloshed-Smurf might be an issue with the 1080 GTX, I have one as well and while everything else is beautiful the clouds appear...strange, at times.

  • @sloshed-smurf I love the way the sky looks, the way clouds form is amazing to me but there are differences of opinions.
