What was THAT sound?! First Real Kraken Tease?

  • Hey Swashbucklers!

It's Captain Jay from The Crow's Nest and I've been doing a good bit of thinking... I can't help but think we've already 'seen' our first in game tease of the kraken!

You're sailing along when suddenly you hear THAT sound - what was it?! Here's my latest take on the mystery roar within the world!

EDIT: On giving the E3 2016 Cinematic Trailer a second listen - the second mysterious roar that occurs at roughly 3:15 AM is nearly IDENTICAL to our one and only kraken tease so far. The link for the E3 trailer is below!

  • @armament-jay Sends shivers down my spine every time I hear it... I cant work out if it's calling for help or trying to scare me away!

    Awesome video too Jay :)

  • Great video Jay! Definitely thought provoking...

  • @armament-jay Great Video! You may be onto something here. That first "roar" sounds like a ghostly moan to me. Always wondered why I would hear it, even at outposts. Maybe the Kraken is the answer?!?! Keep up the good work these videos rock!

  • @armament-jay Was it the Kraken or was it my belly? I get a might peckish round 3🦑

  • @armament-jay

Hmm, I've always wondered about the noise, thinking it might be whales or some other ocean creature. Perhaps heralding an event - it puts me in mind of this phrase too -

'It's always darkest just before the dawn' and also associated with silence and stillness, to hear that sound at that moment, just before the sun will rise, is quite foreboding.

  • More then a couple times have I heard this personally and discussed it with shipmates.

Very eerie and foreboding sounds from the deep!

  • Awesome vid! Nice find

  • We were also wondering what it was. We thought it sounded like a whale at first but after playing for a few days we started to doubt that theory a bit.

Non the less, everytime we heared this sound we froze on our spot xD

  • Excellent video...definitely something to think about :-D

  • Nice find! I can't wait to actually see and experience the Kraken for myself. Hopefully I will not be carrying any expensive chests then.

  • there are other teases for different monsters. like the giant sea serpents, giant birds, and giant crabs. Also the giant sharks...

  • Great video. The one at 3:15am was certainly a "stop and look around" moment when I first heard it.

  • I always just thought it was whales.

  • I find it hard to believe some of you only heard this sound a couple times. Every time I played I heard it more times than I count. It wasn't uncommon at all. Every sessions it was their numerous times. If you played more than 1-hour at time you had to have heard it. I'm not sure how long the day night cycle is, but I'm very certain it's less than 1-hour in game time.

If you played 10+ hours you had to have heard it at least 10 times if not a lot more. What's happening here is the first several times you should have heard it you missed because you were distracted or focused on something else. It's an easy sound to miss if you're in combat. It's an easy sound to miss if you have your music blasting. It's an easy sound to miss if you chatting with your friends. After you finally became aware of the sound the odds are you would hear it more often because you're now familiar with the sound and on the lockout for it. There are still good chances distractions will cause you to miss it.

It's the cry of the kraken, which hasn't made any kills at night, that's why it cries at dawn ;)

heard the sound 20+ times tho (about 50 hours of closed beta gameplay). still every time I stood still and looked around though

  • Oh man I cannot wait!

  • I've heard it many times, but never timed it as you did. Are you sure the noises occur at the same time every night? Or was that just the one night you tested it? @Armament-Jay

  • Im 99% sure that the noise in question is simply a family of sasquatch stranded on one of the islands, calling for a ride.

    Mystery solved folks 😉

    @hallower1980 Hey!

Yep, I'm absolutely positive that it's specifically at those times in the video. I sat around and let 3 separate day/night cycles go by and timed each one.

The roaring always starts up/ends at the exact same times beginning at 3AM!

Yep! From what I remember/timed myself - the average day & night cycle is roughly 24 minutes. Just playing the game for a tiny bit will grant players the weird noises at least once!

dude I'm so glad you timed the day/night cycle, because this is gonna make the game so mcuh easier for me at launch. I'm talking ofcourse about the time-based quests, which makes you go to or wait at a certain location till the quest occurs at X:XX am/pm (ingame time). So realising the day/night cycle is about 24 mins, when I miss a quest due to not being on time, I can turn on a timer set at about 24 mins ^^ thx

I really do hope the kraken is terrifying. I want a moment of panic when I encounter it!

The ambient sounds in this game are great. I a hungry for lots of things that make a sailor fearful when they hear them.

  • @vitix88 Yeah!

I had actually missed the recording of the sounds a few times due to other things happening in game (incoming ships/battles, skeleton attacks, etc haha), but because the cycle was relatively short - the wait for the sound to spring up again wasn't too bad.

The timing felt right - not too long, not too short- but just right within the world. I'm hoping they don't adjust it too much for the final release of the game!

  • @faramous

The atmosphere and sound in the game is amazingly detailed in my opinion. It's getting to the point where I'm actually afraid to swim around in deep water and turn around. I'm nervous I might find something waiting for me besides a shark!

I can't wait to see how far they go with the immersion within the world at launch!

  • Sounds like whales to me. Not like a strange creature.

There you go 8 hours of whales sounds xD

Exactly that! You know that there's been a good team working on a game when you enjoy literally just standing there and taking it all in. I remember doing that back with the first Assassins Creed game. Climbed up to the crows nest more than once and just listened.

Bring on the kraken. Bring on a whole host of others things that go bump in the night.

  • i look forward to hunting these Kraken!

  • Nope just the sound of whales.

  • I believe is connected to a mystical creature since it happens at a specific time and not randomly. Personally I think it's the kraken.

  • For some time I thought these were whales. But then I noticed a typical "roar" which could never be a whale! Kraken? Perhaps :)

  • I heard these noises as well. Thought it was just a whale but they really do sound more menacing.

  • @armament-jay Kraken? Sounds like a whale?
