Suggestion: Introduction of fog and mist into the game!

  • From my experience with the Closed Beta i don't think i have encountered a fog or mist, currently there's haze but i think that's the game draw distance being rendered where you see the silhouette of the ships in the far distance.

Currently as the weather changes from time to time, introducing this feature to the current weather cycle, as in the real world mist/fog usually appears in the mornings, I believe the introduction of fog and mist would have a big impact in the game as this would allow for treasure hunters a opportunity to gather up some treasures and would imply a more defined communication with your crew as you would barely see the island until you are almost on top of it, also would be a challenge with the pirates that want to take you down.

Imagine sailing in the dense fog as you wouldn't expect to be alone and all of a sudden a big galleon appears within the fog to ram your ship! That is my vision and the immersion you would get with this feature!

    Something like this: https://imgur.com/f7A4lz5

Let me know what you think, the possibilities are endless. ps: Sorry for my bad english and sorry if this as already been mentioned! ;)

Edit: I have created this two images from ingame screenshots to better illustrate how mist and fog could work ingame.

  • @legalize-bro I fully agree that it would be amazing to have some fog roll in during the morning hours. Some days it could be very dense and make navigating very tough. It would go miles for the immersion department!

  • @legalize-bro I feel like there was some sort of fog mechanic in the beta but if it actually was it they need to really increase the density of the fog because i was able to see very far no matter what as long as i wasn't in the middle of a storm.

  • It would be cool that the pirate lantern and ship lanterns would help you to orientate in the fog, but it would give your position to others outside of the fog. That would be a great mechanic.

  • I agree. During the Beta, I could spot ships without the use of a spyglass due to how they were rendered at distance. A fog would make the spyglass more useful.

  • That would be pretty awesome! It could be used tactically some times too if someone needed to escape pursuers maybe a smaller ship can just slip into the fog and change directions, while being a bigger ship you couldn't see them unless you about to run into them. Of course to hide big ships could work as well. But that could really lead up to some intense encounters where you know you're right near someone but you cant see them in the dense fog. and maybe you come out of it beside each other or maybe you'd be some where in the distance. Of course choosing to go through the fog could be dangerous(as you mentioned) not being able to see stuff very far in front of you. You would have to rely heavily on who ever is reading the map to guide the way always being aware that rocks don't appear on the map so they'd still be a very possible danger.

I would love to see fog come into the game. Maybe even other similar things like water spouts. Or even like the water spiral thing like in Pirates of the Caribbean At Worlds End. They could add that as like a event that spawns randomly and make it be so if you can manage to sail into it you can retrieve a treasure chest but have the spiral with rocks and other such objects that could sink you in the way! This is what I'm referring to

  • This would be very cool IF AND ONLY IF it was not able to be turned off or tuned down r adjustable in graphics settint. Otherwise people will simply turn it off or ultra low and hunt people enjoying the great graphics.
This has been my experience on any pvp game where you can adjust atmosphere and foliage etc.

  • definitely felt we were missing fog

  • @misterdoomed I see where you are going with people being able to turn it off, but i dont see why would people be able to do so, fog would be part of the weather cycle as it is ingame, and since with heavy fog all the draw distances would be highly reduced this feature could improve performance if done right!

  • @legalize-bro I used to play America's Army on PC, way back in the day. There were a few maps that had fog. I played on a 'minimum requirement' set up and the fog drastically reduced my performance causing massive frame rate drops, thus placing me at a huge disadvantage and no way to correct it.

  • Also if low mist is added, this could be used as a tactic to board other ships as the low mist would engulf the bottom part of ships and you couldnt be able to see bellow water, this meaning someone with a explosive keg could sneak under the enemy ship and explode it :D

  • @shadowstrider-7 Yes, i did play America's Army as well, but there is different approaches to adding fog into a game, for instance Arma, Arma is a really heavy game on your system, but when you have fog the performance increases a lot.

  • I like the idea of fog, along with many other kinds of weather.

  • @legalize-bro The draw distance in ARMA is also massively more than that in SoT, which is why the fog would have helped increase the performance.

  • @legalize-bro

To put it simply. People will lie to get an advantage and say these effects make thier machines laggy or thier internet cant keep up etc.
Sad but true fact. Some people will do anything to screw someone else thats why it will have to be a feature that cant be minimized because it will give a huge advantage to those who can see clearly.
Ive even seen it go so far as people saying games are bias against certain countries where people cant afford fast machines in order to get the ability to turn graphics to " off".

  • I'm not an expert or anything, but isn't the fog something good so it can cover things and those things don't need to render unless they must be seen and that would actually help with the performance of some computers?

  • Great suggestion!

  • I've seen someone post something about this already, because he could see fog in the distance but could still see the ships through it. However, I think close-range fog would be terrific.

I was 100% sure this was going to be a thing in this game, even without asking ^^'

  • This is an amazing idea! Simple and with loads of impact on the gameplay. Assuming the engine can handle...please make this happen Rare!

  • I like this idea!

  • I absolutely loved this idea, but with a little less fog than that image :v

  • I love this idea, but how would ships steer clear of rocks/shipwrecks in the open sea? Could be interesting to see ships have to sail slow/avoid fog altogether.

  • @PrinceOfPromise
This would also increase the risk/reward system for lanterns- turn them on to see rocks, but then other may be able to see you better.
Some special islands could have permanent fog to add a ominous effect.

  • @princeofpromise Don't sail full speed through the fog would be a start, and the lamps on the front of the ship could cut through the fog to an extent, but give your position away to nearby ships. what would also be neat would be if the seas became still in the fog to heighten the tension with an eyry silence going through it. If you were running or fighting this could amplify the noise of gunshots through the fog or even walking on deck. Add in the Chest of Sorrow and now you have a setup for a good suspense movie.

  • @TwilaDerp @Cody15x That'd actually give the lanterns some purpose since as of right now, there's never really any need to have them on. Good idea. And yeah, still, silent seas would add to the experience immensely.

  • Not only would fog look cool, it would also lend a little cover to sloops hoping to even the odds against larger, more visible galleons.

  • @legalize-bro Yes, fog is another thing we have been patiently waiting for. Indeed hopefully it will be added when actual dynamic weather is added.
In the Closed Beta there was no weather outside of the single, always-the-same storm that moves around the map.

  • Fog is a must! The game currently lacks the element of surprise from a boat. On an island, that’s another story.

How often have you been sailing towards another ship, only to have it flee in plenty of time, after they pull anchor and cut c**p to go? The view is nice as they sail away with your potential pirated chests.

  • would be amazing

  • Such a great idea, I'd love to see this in the game.

  • I have been fishing out on Lake Michigan in some thick fog many of times. One of my favorite things! Also one of the most dangerous.

Fog is so calm and quiet and peaceful and beautiful. However, sometimes I wished I was in the middle of a thunderstorm rather than that fog!

  • Not only fog/or mist.

    more weather related.

Lightning that struck your ship, (doesn't sink it, just some damage)

in storm, bigger waves that could kick you from the ship! :o

anyways, you're right, lots of possibilities!

  • Great idea.

  • @legalize-bro this is a brilliant idea! It helps the game is so many ways from immersion to solo players! People talking about needing ‘Safe Zones’ need to look at this thread as I think this is a reasonable solution that would benefit all players whilst keeping the game fun and interesting. It also benefits players that play the game more, i.e. you are playing solo and know the map like the back of your hand, a galleon is chasing you. Well you can use the fog to your advantage and out manoeuvre them by some rocks and bam they crash and sink! I like the suggestion that not only does the fog appear on most the map in the morning and maybe evening, but also works like the dynamic weathering of the seas and would appear randomly on different oceans throughout the day. So you could sail into or out of fog on your trips also. This would help with my previous point of being chased, head for fog!
Great idea I hope the devs see it and take some inspiration for the final release!

  • @legalize-bro Totally needed. Maybe in certain areas or around the Watch towers at night. Around outposts would be great. Skeletons coming out of nowhere would be scary.
